Review

This is a timely work in that it parallels interest in applying effective business principles and practices to the nonprofit and government sector. It also aligns business with the idea of doing well and doing good. (Toni Ungaretti, Johns Hopkins School of Education)There is no doubt in my mind that Jeanne Liedtka is a leader in the fields of design thinking, human-centered design, and innovation in general. (Reinhold Steinbeck, Center for Design Research, Stanford University)The process of design thinking can be applied to the normally conservative and entrenched public, social, and educational sectors to start to solve big messy problems. (David E. Smith, Center for Design Innovation)Taken altogether, Design Thinking for the Greater Good: Innovation in the Social Sector, is an excellent resource. . . . it serves as a practical guide for those who want to undertake organizational change from Innovation I to Innovation II, in a social sector environment that focuses on meeting human needs. (Brenda Sipe The Foundation Review)Liedtka, Salzman, and Azer’s book makes an important contribution in outlining some of the challenges and opportunities of applying design-thinking behaviors and mind-sets in the social sector. They make a case for increasing the capacity needed to scale the approach across the sector, provide a framework for practitioners to apply it within their organizations, and off er case studies of organizations that have done so. A great overview of methodology to bring innovation spirit into projects and organizations as a whole. Creating a culture is design needs innovation through confidence and team member pride is ownership. This is a good book to start understanding design thinking because the examples are concrete and real world, while the authors do their best to break down their meaning through lessons learned.

Great book arrived slightly late but overall happy with the product.

As a design thinking and social innovation educator, this book will make it so much easier to introduce our school's students and stakeholders to the work we're doing. A must-read for those who seek to co-create a better world.

Only 1 review? At least it is selling! The bane of my existence (well, one of them) is the number of people who claim to be 'expert' at things like the lean startup and design thinking. If empathy is at the core of DT, why do so many raging narcissists seem to be teaching it, even when applied to social innovation? LOL but...This new book is a clear remedy for that, even beyond its focus on social innovation & social entrepreneurship. I have read many books and articles of DT, including the best (and worst) and this now has a prominent spot on my "good" shelf. The books that I make sure other people read.I'm a huge fan of the d.school and IDEO (not to mention Tina Seelig) but Dr. Liedtka might be the best. She certainly adds a unique twist to DT and doing it for real. Check her youtube speaking for an hour to NASA... you will thank me. You will also thank me if you -- er, WHEN you read this. And even if you are a skeptic on design thinking but you are eager to promote social innovation... you want to read this. So many books that purport to tell you how to use DT to save the world... and so underwhelming. They read like the author skimmed a few articles and thought "I can write about this. I'm going to save the world."Liedtka does make DT in social innovation straightforward. Not easy... straightforward. You CAN do this, you don't have to be special. Now more than ever we need social innovators and social entrepreneurs - the triple bottom line demands it. Get started here.Battle-tested advice? Check. Sound, strong theory base? Check. Clear, strong prose? Check. A bargain price? Check. Finally, I've never met Dr, Liedtka in person but from reading her stuff... I know her. Not many authors in my world can do that. I definitely thank her for this. If I can answer any questions, holler!

How To Think Differently Than a Smart MachineJeanne Liedtka is a world renown strategic and innovative thinker. I have learned from all of her books on Design Thinking and this book co-authored with Randy Salzman and Daisy Azer is my favorite! Why? Because this book enables you and me as individuals and as members of non-profit communities to embrace a new way to approach life and work... a way that can create unseen possibilities that can improve lives - a way that helps us “escape the prison of our own perspective”. A liberating way to think and engage with others. This is a “how to book” that uniquely is both an individual and a social organizational roadmap to transcendence of human insight, problem identification, the generation of possibilities and human dialogue. As the Smart Machine Age engulfs us over the next decade, a key way that human beings will be able to add value is through imagination and innovation. This book contains the toolkit you will need to excel at being imaginative and innovative with others. And this book contains 10 engaging stories about how people working in governmental and social service organizations have used Design Thinking to make a positive difference - to have a positive meaningful impact for their stakeholders. This book can transform how you think, how you listen and how you relate to others. The power of living the “4 Questions” can be transformative for all of us.

You have a product idea. Now it's time to see if it solves a real problem, if customers would be willing to pay for it, to understand your market. This book will get you doing that, right away. Without fluff, the book describes how to do customer development and gives you scripts to do cold calls, interviews, etc.Quite useful to the engineer in me that just wants to "add more features".

I like the premise of this book- that startups often designs product without fully understanding the market they are aiming at. The book gives very good, step by step instructions on how to do some market research and how to get results that you can trust.

Great explanations following up with great examples. I really understood the need for getting out and testing the hypothesis by talking to customers and potential customers. And this book gave good tips on how to do that.

The book has some advice on primary market research. It discusses some ideas on ways to fund customers for interviews. It was short and underwhelming. I expected more hidden secrets that could enhance my game when "Talking to humans"

I couldn't put this book down. I've already shared it with 5 teams (only one day after reading it). If you are teaching or mentoring anybody in the customer discovery process, you've got to share this with them.

First time entrepreneurs and product mangers should read this book.It doesnot cover the detailed mechanics of the customer interviews but really helps you get out and talk to customers. It helps you find out uncover the real pain points and business wise priorities.

Fun, relatable examples and easy to read. I'm new to customer experience and understanding product usability - rhe guidelines provided in the book are concise and sensible to a newb like me. Looking forward to taking my learning into the field and talking to humans 🙂

This book is short but absolutely straight to the point. It helps you to develop a necessary framework and a mindset ready for insightful conversations with people.

Marcuse as you expect whether you agree with or not!

I read it 40 years ago and it was time to revisit his vision of a psychological future (our today). He's not far off when he discusses the implications of a decline of privacy and breakdown of family bonds replaced by those of an extended social network. He treats Freud as an author rather than an ideology.Marcuse uses Freud's terminology, not an explicit model (a point he makes several times) to suggest new ways of looking at society. It's not an easy read and not all his points are clearly stated (or even intelligible) but worth the effort.

For me the most important part of the book is in the last section in which Marcuse have many bitter comments against Erich Fromm. It would have been more satisfying if we can also read the rebuttals by Erich Fromm.

In our age of "sex positive" this has become a crucial read for anyone who desires social change which will actally improve our situation.

One of the greatest books of the 20th Century

Great book. A classic. The packaging and customer service were wonderful.

Marcuse does a decent job of packaging Freud's thoughts but there aren't any original ideas of his own, maybe because he is a post modernist intellectual midget. Worth a read if you want to recognize some of the origins of subversive 20th century western political movements.

Herbert Marcuse (1898-1979) was a German philosopher, sociologist, and political theorist, associated with the Frankfurt School of critical theory, until he moved to the United States in 1934. He wrote other books, such as One-Dimensional Man, Studies in the Ideology of Advanced Industrial Society. He wrote in the 1966 "Political Preface" to this 1955 book, "the title expressed an optimistic, euphemistic, even positive thought, namely, that that achievements of advanced industrial society would enable man to ... use the social wealth for shaping man's world in accordance with his Life Instincts, in the concerted struggle against the purveyors of Death. This optimism was based on the assumption that the rationale for the continued acceptance of domination no longer prevailed, that scarcity and the need for toil were only 'artificially' perpetuated--in the interest of preserving the system of domination. I neglected or minimized the fact that this 'obsolescent' rationale had been vastly strengthened (if not replaced) by even more efficient forms of social control." (Pg. xi)He observes, "The very progress of civilization under the performance principle has attained a level of productivity at which the social demands upon instinctual energy to be spent in alienated labor could be considerably reduced. Consequently, the continued repressive organization of the instincts seems to be necessitated less by the 'struggle for existence' than in the interest in prolonging this struggle---by the interest in domination." (Pg. 129-130)He argues, "Even under optimum conditions of a rational organization of society, the gratification of human needs would require labor, and this fact alone would enforce quantitative and qualitative instinctual restraint, and thereby numerous social taboos. No matter how rich, civilization depends on steady and methodical work, and thus an unpleasurable delay in satisfaction. Since the primary instincts rebel 'by nature' against such delay, their repressive modification therefore remains a necessity for all civilization." (Pg. 153-154)He summarizes, "the idea of a non-repressive civilization on the basis of the achievements of the performance principle encountered the argument that instinctual liberation ... would explode civilization itself, since the latter is sustained only ... through the repressive utilization of instinctual energy... To meet this argument, we recalled certain archetypes of imagination which, in contrast to the culture-heroes of repressive productivity, symbolized creative receptivity." (Pg. 175)He asserts, "It is true that man appears as an individual who 'integrates' a diversity of inherited and acquired qualities into a total personality, and that the latter develops in relating itself to the world (things and people) under manifold and varying conditions. But this personality and its development are PRE-formed down to the deepest instinctual structure ... [which] means that the diversities and the autonomy of individual 'growth' are secondary phenomena. How much reality there is behind individuality depends on the scope, form, and effectiveness of the repressive controls prevalent at the given stage of civilization." (Pg. 252)Marcuse is no longer a "trendy" philosopher (as he briefly was in the 1960s), but this book (along with One-Dimensional Man] is one of his books with lasting philosophical and political value.

This series is everything I wanted and more. I highly recommend for any deadpool or spiderman fan. I read it in one afternoon. I could not put it down. I am a huge Spideypool fan and even though I doubt we'll ever get a real romance with these two I am willing to take whatever scraps the creators are willing to toss us fangirls.

Marvel finally decided to make a Spider-Man-Deadpool team up comic. This collects issues #1-5 and 8. It was only natural that this would come about. Deadpool often talked about how much he liked Spidey and the two both like talking. At the same time Peter Parker can’t stand Wade Wilson so they make an odd couple. The basis of this collection is that Pool is trying to be a better person and decides to hang out with Spider-Man to improve himself. At the same time he wants to kill Peter Parker because he thinks he’s a greedy businessman not knowing Parker’s secret identity. Wilson even reveals his daughter Ellie to Parker and Spider-Man thinks he can reclaim a lost soul.In the process they go through a whole bunch of random bad guys. They make one liners at each other. Things get blown up. People get stabbed. You know the business. Wilson even tries to set Spidey up with a blind date which blows up in their faces. It’s fun and inane at the same time.

Well there is 3 things about this tradeI don't like so I'll just get them out of the way immediately.1. It starts with the 1st five issues then jumps to issue 8 which when I read the synopsis, I didn't think it would bother me because im not a fan of Deadpool or the current status Dan Slott has put Spider-Man in as billionaire Tony Stark/Bruce Wayne rip-off. Once I finished the 5th issue and skipped issues 6 & 7 because Marvel decided to leave them out anyway even though on the back of the book they give you the idea those stories are included I got frustrated going to issue 8. I don't buy single issues from Marvel because the prices for their single issues are ridiculous especially when you compare them to what DC is doing, so didnt know what stories were contained in each issue of this trade. Missing out on those 2 chapters of this series did bother me a little because now im left wondering what happened in them, im guessing they'll put them in the next trade or leave them out of the trades altogether just like what happened with Rick Remender's Venom series which has kept me from picking them up.2. Spider-Man he's my favorite character Marvel has and Deadpool is one of the characters they have I dislike the most but I like him way more than Spidey in this book. Peter Parker/Spider-Man comes off as a total knob when interacting with Deadpool save for one section when Deadpool gets him a date but that's the only part I found Spidey as an enjoyable character. I assume Joe Kelly is writing Spider-Man that way because he's not a fan of the current version of Spider-Man either and is jabbing at editorial for turning him into a turd.3. The dialogue left me scratching my head a lot, when the 2 heroes would speak with each other. it would start off well then suddenly hit a brick wall and the dialogue would just leave you hanging. Maybe its just the character of Deadpool and how he is written that im not used to reading or the writer should have spent a little extra time going over his work. Whatever the case this could have been done better. Now what I likeThe artwork was great and it was the first time I actually read something Ed McGuinness has done the art for and id love to see more of his work in conjunction with Spider-Man in the future once the character is being handled better in the main Spider-Man book. While I feel that Spider-Man sucked in this book Im glad Joe Kelly highlighted how much of a snob he is in it reflecting what I think of him in the Amazing Spider-Man series and I give him credit for making me care WAY more for Deadpool. While I have problems with the dialogue it was a fun book until the end when they skip over Issues 6 & 7 and go straight to 8 instead, i'm probably going to grab the next trade assuming those missing issues are included in that one. If you like current Spider-Man and the Deadpool character id say pick it up, or even if you despise the current interpretation of Spider-Man and want to see him be shown in a negative light while interacting with a character who just wants to be his friend pick it up, Maybe this series will be the one to make me enjoy Deadpool as a character, I certainly liked him better in this than I did my favorite superhero.

I'm not a fan of spiderman, and I can only tolerate small amounts of deadpool at a time, yet I loved this book. Basically the plot is that deadpool decreases he wants to be spiderman friend, after an incident in uncanny avengers where spiderman leaves the team over deadpool being a member. This book is hilarious, and is one of the only times I've really found spiderman funny. Each of them gets roughly sequel panel time, so it it really is a good team up story. I'm not sure how long this idea can go on without getting played out, but i would highly recommend this volume.

Product itself is absolutely amazing - improper packaging, however caused it to come stuffed into my mailbox. I've spent a week trying to get the huge crease out of it. If I'd bought it used, I'd be more understanding, but purchasing a new comic book, this is a little ridiculous.

Deadpool and Spiderman... And the Merc with the mouth honestly cares about someone else? Fantastic! Unless Wade is crazier than usual, his confession that he's actually concerned with Spiderman's state of mind is, well, mind-blowing.Five stars and worth every one.

This book is fun. Spider-Man and Deadpool are the friends that shouldn't be friends but somehow are. I was pulled into the story from the beginning, and I can't wait to see where things go in volume 2.

Deadpool and Spiderman make an excellent duo. They both have a snarky sense of humor and kick lots of bad guy tail. Deadpool's unabashed mancrush on Spiderman never fails to entertain. Overall it's a good series.
