I remember reading this book as a child and loved it back then. I am now an instructional aide for some 6th graders. They really were not invested in reading until I gave them this book. There was one scholar in particular who would not read any book given to them because they were not "good" at reading until they picked this one up. They have read this book enthusiastically and actually want to complete their work quickly so they can get back to reading the book. Any book that can truly change a scholar's perception of reading is truly a marvelous book. I'm glad to get them for the scholars of my class.

My son was not a reader, but when he was in middle school 11 yrs ago, he read this entire series in a week! I couldn't believe it, knew it had to be awesome, so I read it also and loved it. My daughter, who is now 11, is an avid reader at an advanced level. When I suggested this series she half heartedly agreed to read it, but I got the impression she didn't feel it would be up to her standards. When she finally ran out of books and picked up the 1st book, she was riveted and couldn't put it down! Missing a few of the series, I immediately popped on Amazon to pick this one up. It arrived ASAP in the exact condition as listed. Couldn't be happier !

I had a terrible time getting my son to read. At the time, his school recommended thirty-minutes of reading at home every day and it was always a fight to get him to sit down and read. A friend of mine said her son really enjoyed these books so I ordered them in the hopes that he'd enjoy them.Because I'm a tad overprotective, I decided to start reading the books prior to giving them to him. I was instantly hooked. I'm not a huge fan of teen books (never read the very popular Harry Potter or Twilight), but these books were fantastic. I found myself reading them very quickly and then anxious to have the next book to continue the story. The characters are well developed and the stories were age appropriate (he was in 5th grade at the time). Eventually he ended up reading the entire series of 12 books (and so did I!). Some time later the movie came out... sadly it wasn't very good.Since he's read these books he's developed a love of reading and devours almost everything we get him. I know that these books aren't 100% responsible for this new love of reading but I feel like they definitely got us moving in the right direction. I would definitely recommend them to any young teen or even adult!

After seeing a preview clip for the movie version, I thought it would be interesting to read this. I read the frist 5 books of the series the weekend. This book (and series) is aimed at boys and girls in the middle school range. There are lots of icky-icky moments that kids seem to love, and the moral decisions are fairly simplistic. Having said that, these are pretty good adventures. Each one has the plotting and story trajectory of, maybe, a weekly TV program. But these are good adventures for kids. I enjoyed them, and would recommend them (and plan to this very morning!) to any parent trying to interest their children in reading. This story of a young boy who ends up as a vampire's assistant, his further adventures, his growth in knowledge, are worthwhile.I also liked how the author snuck in a few challenging vocabulary items (the hero wonders why his vampire master has to use such big words!).Read and enjoy.

Love love love this vampire-based book series. I am a 58 year old female, however, I have always enjoyed "boy" type, action based fiction books as a reader. What I found about the entire Cirque Du Freak series, however, was that it was not JUST about being a vampire, or a member of a Freak Show. It teaches about loyalty and friendship; what a real 'family' is, even without the blood-relation.In fact, I was so smitten with this series (Mr Shan, are listening?), that I made a gift of all my books to a then 11-year-old friend, because I was confident there was little to no swearing of any consequence, no real sexual content, but a good wholesome and fun teaching story definitely well-worth my time and my young friend's.Hours and hours of good reading fun and miles of smiles afterward. I cannot wait to read more from Darren Shan.

I love this book, i rear it when i was a child and could never stop reading it, even after i finish the whole story. It get boring at the first few chapter in the first book, get better later on. Those that loves horrors or bump in the night, this book will get the mood going, it does not matter if your a child, teens, or an adult.I recommend this book for all ages as i had bought the whole series, great book to pass down through generations.

Darren Shan wins again in the fourth installment of this addictive series. I challenge anyone who has read one of the books in the series to claim that anything else was on their mind until reading the next book in the series...and the next, next, next...Vampire Mountain presents several new twists and pieces of information that add even more intrigue to an already addictive and entertaining series. We learn more about little people and tons more about the ways of vampires. This book is a setup for the next in the series which occurs four hours after the end of this book. The biggest and most important part of this piece of the series is the news of what is on the horizon of the clan's future and their biggest challenge ever--The Vampaneze...I will say no more as I do not want to spoil the experience. This series is brilliant. What a fantastic and creative journey!

From the Back Cover

"Oliver Morton displays here again the usual virtues of his writing, which include a sparkling clarity maintained even when conveying huge complex masses of information, often about topics new to all of us; and then, even more importantly, good judgment. He makes distinctions when evaluating gnarly problems, and explains the distinctions very persuasively, and with a generous dry wit. All these abilities are now devoted to perhaps the crucial question of our time, the climate, making this simply a Necessary Book, which is also a pleasure to read. Maybe that combination makes it sui generis, but in any case it's an important addition to current discourse, an excellent way to get oriented to our most pressing environmental problem, and I urge people to read it and ponder its news."--Kim Stanley Robinson, author of Red Mars and Aurora"This is the first book to properly consider the dimensions of the new world we are living in. Morton's book is indispensable, highly readable, and incredibly timely."--Mark Lynas, author of The God Species"A scholar and a fine literary stylist, Oliver Morton sets the geoengineering debate in a fascinating historical and social context. The Planet Remade is much the best book on the subject and deserves a wide readership."--Martin Rees, author of Our Final Century"One of the most important and provocative books I've read in years. The Planet Remade is essential for policymakers, environmentalists, skeptics, and anyone else who prefers their views on climate change to be based on evidence rather than rhetoric."--Hari Kunzru, author of Gods without Men"Written with the grace and clarity its subject demands, The Planet Remade offers just what the issue of climate change needs: fresh thinking about what can be done, based on deep respect for the planet, the science, and the concerns of people with differing points of view. It's an enriching addition to the literature of possible worlds."--Marek Kohn, author of A Reason for Everything and Turned Out Nice"Deeply rooted in history and smartly optimistic about the future, this is--by far--the best book yet on geoengineering."--David Keith, Harvard University and author of A Case for Climate Engineering"In Morton's new book, he takes on some of the most challenging issues of our age. It is a readable and thought-provoking look at humanity's dance with hubristic ideas and deeds regarding the manipulation of the environment on a planetary scale. He is clearly one of the best science writers of our day."--Steven Hamburg, Environmental Defense Fund"Taking a sensible and low-key approach to a rather provocative subject, Morton shows why geoengineering is something that the mainstream will need to consider--it's not something just for the fringes."--Ken Caldeira, Carnegie Institution for Science"Morton accessibly describes the potential and risks of geoengineering and puts them in the context of climate change and other large-scale interventions that humans have had on the earth system or might seek to have in the future."--Tim Kruger, University of Oxford"Engaging, persuasive, and thought provoking. Morton discusses the potential role and consequences of geoengineering and puts forward his own carefully considered views on the subject. The Planet Remade is a tour de force of wide-ranging scholarship as well as a soundly argued polemic."--John Shepherd, University of Southampton

If you go to a library and peruse the shelves of what writers from past decades thought future technologies might be like, you're liable to find some funny stuff. I expect that many of the existing books on geoengineering will be quaintly amusing to library-goers of 2050 or 2100.This book, however, I expect to have a long shelf-life: it's written not just for the present moment or the next climate conference, but for posterity; it will help future generations understand the deliberations & decisions of this time.Firstly, it's not plain "science writing"— this "book about the boundaries between physical planets and imagined worlds" is rich with history, & the best passages are literary or philosophical. The earthsystem is evoked as lived dynamic experience: "like wind on the skin, or the tremor in the ground from rushing water nearby, or lightning sensed through shut eyelids..."That said, there is a lot of accessibly-explained science. I've seen the Mt. Pinatubo powerpoint slide projected more times than I can count, but never fully grasped where climate modeling was at the time of Pinatubo, or understood the contribution of the eruption to climate science, before reading this book. I learned more about the stratosphere here than in 50 lectures on geoengineering; that is, I learned about it in a whole manner— not just stratosphere-as-object or place, but about the human conception of it and how that evolved. One of the book's gifts is its ability to easily place geoengineering into alignment with history; to tell the broader story — about both the earthsystem, and "men of human empire; the sort of men who can attract the interest and admiration of wealthier and more powerful men." You'll read about imperialism & the opening and closing of the frontier; about the jaded, gilded fin de siecle (lack of) spirit. In a media ecology that doesn't lend itself to seeing events within the broad context of history, this is quite refreshing — this subject really did need a book-length treatment that was more than just reportage. Speaking of grand narratives of history, I appreciate that this book doesn't hang its hat on "the Anthropocene"; it reckons with the term without making it central or a key tag. Smart move. There's a lot here I sympathize with — for example, the critique that natural and social scientists make the mistake of talking "as though what geoengineering is has already been decided, rather than treating it as something still up for grabs"; the argument that broadening the debate is not just about bringing more and different expertise in, but reimagining it. The comparison to human intervention in the nitrogen cycle was well-argued and compelling.I do wish the book had discussed gender in relation to its topic, and I'm curious to hear how the scenario near the end is received. The text suffers a bit from the syndrome of nearly all "environmental" books these days: you spend all your chapters tracing the roots and contours of a present phenomenon, and then there's only a chapter left for the future (Morton has made it explicit that the problem / solution framing is not useful here, so I won't use those terms, but it seems like a variation on the classic problem / solution book). Perhaps a companion volume is needed.Yet my favorite thing about this book is how nestles its utopian dream comfortably in small passages scattered throughout the text — there's no program, no bullet points, no grand utopian design, no grandstanding or ego-driven polemic: just a humble, powerful seed-planting type of strategy to encourage the reader to think & imagine. The basic idea: that exploring geoengineering "could spurt and shape the development of a new way of making planetary decisions", not just to develop a new thermostat, but to develop "a new hand to use it". The basic question: how can the challenge of remaking the planet "be used to bring about a world that could be trusted with the power to meet that challenge"? The simple-machines metaphor of levers and fulcrums used throughout actually works for me — no more spoilers here, though, you'll have to read it, and then, perhaps, be compelled to work with it.

Geoengineering the climate. Like many, perhaps most, people who are worried about climate change and its effects, I have found the idea of geoengineering repugnant, and I have argued against it as a distraction against the real solution, which is to eliminate net carbon emissions.About a year ago I finally accepted that when it comes to climate change the choice is not between good options and bad ones, but between very bad outcomes and terrible ones. When one really accepts this, then it becomes possible to think about national and international actions that really could happen. The terrible outcomes are almost certain to come to pass unless there is a mass outbreak of world peace, and agreement among all nations to direct huge resources towards solving the problem.World peace and united action among all nations... that's not going to happen unless there is a very clear, very present, very large danger. When the climate does present such a danger, though, the world will be spending its resources battling the effects and will have very little to spare for doing anything about the causes. This is where geoengineering comes in. As Mr. Morton explains, geoengineering can provide respite from the worst effects of climate change quite cheaply: a geoengineering program could be maintained indefinitely--certainly for 50 years or so, enough time to fix the causes--by a nation with a GDP the size of Viet Nam's. Make no mistake, though: in two hundred years' time the climate will be different. The question is, can civilization survive the transition? If you're ready to accept that the world is the way that it is, and to think the unthinkable, read this book to find out the history of the idea of climate engineering, and also get Mr. Morton's perceptive thoughts on the challenges for the idea, which are all psychological and political. It may not seem it, but this is an optimistic, hopeful book.

This is a book everybody who is interested in climate change should read, regardless of his political opinion. The book is a bit tedious, as is the subject if persued rigerously and thoughly. The subject of climate change presents no simple, easy answers and many, many trade-offs and compromises. This book explores those issues. Early on, the author asks the reader to answer two questions: Do you think human activity impacts the climate? Do you think the problem is difficult to solve? The author posits that most people fall into two groups: the No - Yes group and the Yes - No group. The author and I ane in the the Yes - Yes group which may explain why I appreciate this difficult book.

Engagingly written -- I could hardly put it down! -- comprehensive, thorough, and optimistic without being credulous, this book contains a wealth of information about the "earthsystem" (as Morton likes to call it) and the effects we're already having on it as well as those we could potentially create intentionally. The book makes an excellent case for expanding research into geoengineering, and I hope it gets widely read.

I learned so much from this book. The author lays out all the arguments fairly, a rare practice these days. It is in places a bit thick going, but that's just because the author wants to paint a complete picture. I highly recommend this book to all who value balanced and honest scientific dialogue.

The book presents a brilliant idea how to use engineering to cool the world. This idea contrasts the common view according to which the world should decrease the emission CO2 as soon as possible. The suggestion is presented in the first chapters. The other chapters review methods that were suggested for reducing the CO2, and failed.

where we are going to have to go... what Paris 2015 agreed to. excellent primer on that.

A balanced discussion of a complex topic that is wonderfully written.

This is one of those classic cases where the greatness of a man, the uniqueness of his life story and his legendary heroism puts a blind spot on the Amazon reviewers who award five stars to a two-star book simply because it was written about a five-star man. Rick Rescorla is a genuine American hero, one whose name should be known by every patriot and whose heroics should be taught in every classroom. He has been described as the greatest small unit leader in the Vietnam War, was inducted into the Army Officer Candidate School's Hall of Fame and was a key character in Hal Moore's classic book, We Were Soldiers Once and Young. His iconic image even graces the cover of Moore's book. But Rescorla's heroics passed into legend on 9-11 when he gave his life to rescue over 2700 fellow Morgan Stanley employees from the World Trade Center. Rescorla's Vietnam service and 9-11 heroics are the best elements of this otherwise perspective-jarring, maudlin story of the relationship between Rescorla, his second wife Susan and his best friend from the Army, Dan Hill. Everyone who's read this turkey knows it's not a straight-forward biography at all but a relationship book. James Stewart took his well-written article about Rescorla from the New Yorker or New York Times or wherever it was first published, and turned it into an infomercial about Susan Rescorla's and Dan Hill's self-published biographies. He padded it with all kinds of new-age Rescorla religious ideas, chick-lit pre-Rick romance drama from Susan's college days and a bunch of adolescent, barroom-quality war-stories about "Dan and Rick" to produce a truly mundane bit of journalistic bio fluff, a shallow, post-modern relationship book that Time magazine called "the best non-fiction book of the year." Did they read it? Or base their review on Stewart's excellent original article? I think I know the answer. I bought this book because I wanted to learn what made Rick Rescorla tick -- to find out what leadership principles he developed in his life to help him become the great leader and human being he was. What were his motivations? What were his goals? What of history or his experiences in Africa shaped his character? Stewart skims along the surface of all this, never delving too deep. I wondered about his service in the Army Reserve where he rose to the rank of Colonel. Surely Stewart could have interviewed some of the men and women he served alongside in those years. The Vietnam stuff from Hal Moore's book and the chapter on Rescorla's final hours on 9-11 are very good. I'll give it three-stars for those and to keep Rick Rescorla's memory alive. But barely because the rest is fluff. I get it that some Veterans gave this book praise because they empathize with Rescorla as the disappointed Vietnam Vet struggling with PTSD and the purpose of it all (I am a Vet, too and I hear ya), but some of the brief five-star reviews are probably from James Stewart's pals in the business. Don't be fooled. Disappointing. Find Stewart's original article and you can read all the book's best parts without the padding. Rick Rescorla deserved better than this.

I am profoundly thankful for this book because it memorializes and, in so far as possible, explains Rick Rescorla -- Colonel Rescorla, Managing Director of Security of Morgan Stanley Mr. Rescorla, whose last battle saved thousands of lives and who might have saved his own for a little longer -- if he hadn't gone back into the falling Tower for the rest of them.I've spent over 25 years in two industries: Wall Street and writing fiction. I was in a meeting on 9/11 when a fireman's wife who was a secretary to our of our managing directors in midtown came running in with the news that the first 747 had crashed into World Trade. "There are 3500 people at Morgan Stanley," said one man. We had no idea what to do: we finished the meeting and came out to find that the second tower had fallen, and we were being evacuated from our midtown office.I read the New Yorker article and realized that Rescorla was known to me by reputation: the man who shut down the trading desk at Morgan to drill people in evacuation after the first attack in 1993; the young soldier on the cover of my copy of WE WERE SOLDIERS ONCE AND YOUNG..., the OCS candidate who, like my father, had trained at Fort Benning; a quiet legend throughout Wall Street. This book is concise, covers a great deal of time and territory and brings out other heroes such as Dan Hill and Susan Rescorla, whose endurance reminds us that they are heroes "who only stand and wait."This book answered the questions I had not thought to ask in my thankfulness that there WAS a Rick Rescorla when we needed him most.

Rick Rescorla was a Cornish lad who went to war. First as a British police and army officer against Communist terrorists in British Africa, where a meeting with a US CIA operative and lifelong friend, took him to the US, where he joined the US Army. Commissioned, he was shipped out to Vietnam with the Second Battalion, 7th US Air Cavalry. Brought in as a reinforcement for the first battalion during the intense three day Battle of Ia Drang, his platoon held the crucial left flank of then LTCOL Hal Moore's position at Landing Zone X-ray. The following morning 2nd LEUT Rescorla ordered the bayonet charge which took the entire battalion forward and swept the NV Army brigade from the field. His crucial role was left out of Mel Gibson's movie 'We Were Soldiers', based on LTGEN Hal Moore's book, ' 'We Were Soldiers Once .... And Young'. Rescorla was disgusted and would not see the movie. After obtaining US Citizenship, Rescorla went to university and became a university lecturer and playwrite. He also continued with the US Army Reserve, retiring as a full colonel. Finding life dull he took on the job of head of security for Morgan Stanley in the World Trade Centre south tower. He and other security people predicted that the Muslim terrorists having failed to drop the buildings in 1993, would try again, this time by air. On 11 September 2001, he successfully evacuated some 3 000 staff but went back in to try to find some stragglers, when the south tower collapsed. Rick Rescorla, hero of Ia Drang, died a hero on 9/11. He is memorialised by a statue at Fort Benning of him ordering the Ia Drang bayonet charge, photographed by Joe Galloway at the precise moment; and in his home town of Hayle, in Cornwall, England.

This was a truly inspirational book for Christians. It has 826 pages & I read it in 2 days. Answered so many questions andshe used "exact words and verses from the KJV". I actually purchased more of these and have given them to my friends. After going through this the 1st time and just reading straight through, now I'm going through it again and using it as Biblestudy and answering questions etc.

This is an excellent book to read along with your regular Bible reading. It gives so much contextual information that many areas of the Bible can be more easily understood. It also helps to connect the Old Testament to the New Testament with the information which helps the reader understand that it is one book with one story which is fulfilled and completed in Christ Jesus the savior.

This is as simple as a book gets. A short and concise page about each type of tree and then usually drawings of how to prune. At the back of the book are more diagrams/how to's and short readings as well about summer pruning vs. winter/dormant pruning; espalier pruning and more. For the reader that wants direct and easy to understand information, this is it.

What a wonderful resource. This book was recommended to me by Bill, an excellent local arborist, who said: "You can't afford for me to come out and trim your fruit trees every year...buy the Martin book and do it yourself." Even Bill carefully reviews this book before trimming a fruit tree. Particularly peach trees, which must be done very carefully.

How to prune fruit trees is a “orchard Bible” that I’ve used for over 20 years. It was out of print for many of those years but recently is on the market with some additional information. The best portion of the book Is how to develop a new fruit tree when you get it from the nursery, and learn how the initial pruning will set the tree framework for developing fruit for the rest of its life. The illustrations are excellent for showing how to prune trees over the years to develop a large fruit crop. Sanford the original author really helped my orchard.

Great detailed advice and instruction with nice sketches for where to prune. I carried this book around the orchard last year while I pruned and had great success with my crops this year.

Very informative book on fruit tree pruning!Simple and to the point.

Covers a lot of different trees and other plants in brief but useful detail. Illustrations are basically rough back of the envelope sketches.

As a Master Gardner, I have found this book to be one of the best pruning books available. At one time it was almost impossible to find and buy. Glad to see that it is now available for everyone to use as a guide and reference.

Very informative and very practical approach to pruning fruit trees, with some essential details that make the difference. Highly recommend this book to anyone who prunes fruit trees in a residential setting.
