Review

“Tikki tikki tembo-no sa rembo-chari bari ruchi-pip peri pembo is the full name of the firstborn son in the Chinese family of this story. As the firstborn's, his name must be spoken completely and reverently. This old folktale of what happens when the boy falls into a well and his younger brother attempts to get help is nicely retold and should make excellent read-aloud material....Bright, active, and delightfully expressive.” ―School Library Journal“On spacious, uncluttered pages the artist has extended the story with wonderfully droll ink-and-wash drawings that combine imaginative beauty with a true Chinese spirit.” ―The Horn Book“Just right for storytelling and tongue-twisting repeating, and . . . for reading aloud.” ―Kirkus Reviews

Great book. This is fun to read and has a nice lesson. As a reading specialist and English teacher, I wish the critics and book banners would go away. So what if it is not completely authentic. It's a fiction book not a history or cultural lesson. It makes me wonder what these people read to children because if everything has to be totally accurate, animals don't talk, and then there is Santa, the Tooth Fairy, Easter Bunny...get it?

In a nutshell: Tikki Tikki Tembo as retold by Arlene Mosel is a fabled Chinese fable about two little brothers. The oldest one is purportedly given a long impressive name meaning “The Most Wonderful Thing in the Whole Wide World” as he is to inherit his parents’ beloved possessions. His younger brother is considered some sort of back-up and is given a short name (Chang) which means “Little or Nothing” or Clueless Playmate or something. Wiki-the-source-of-all-truth-pedia, states that the book is controversial because it may be a Japanese story told about China and does not portray Chinese culture accurately. I plan to seek guidance from my Chinese family members on where this story lands on the offensiveness scale. So,the boys are monkeying around and Clueless Playmate falls into the well. Golden Boy runs to his mother and they get a ladder-wielding-tree-napping-old-man to save him named “Old Man With The Ladder.” He pumps the boy’s leg like a water pump to revive him which must be some sort of olden time CPR.Of course the little boys are monkeying around in the bathtub AGAIN, I mean near the well, despite the close brush with death and this time Golden Boy falls into the well. His brother runs for help and after repeating John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt four or five times, almost passes out from exhaustion, leaving his evil mother childless. Fortunately, Old Man With The Ladder comes to his senses and rescues Golden Boy with the same water pump CPR procedure. And the story concludes that this is why Chinese families name their kids little, short names.Families can talk about: How would you feel if your name meant Little or Nothing? Do you know what your name means? Why is the mom so mean and dismissive of the younger brother? Why don’t the little boys mind their mother? Do you mind your mother? How confident are you about that answer? What is your game plan if you fall into a well or deep water? What should you do? And if you see your brother fall in? Why do you think swimming lessons are important? Which is more fun to say: Tikki tikki tembo-no sa rembo-chari bari ruchi-pip peri pembo or John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt?

I remember this boom from childhood and loved it. The name of the little boy is oh so fun to say BUT as an adult the message of this book is horrifying. The mom is absent and neglectful of her younger son, the prized first son is left permenantly scared, and no one learns a lesson except to give the first favored son a short name...I’m sorry what?!? This book did not stand the test of time for me. But I would love to see it revised with a different ending. The illustrations are lovely and well tiki tiki tembo is super fun to say.

One of the most read books when I was a kid. Wanted to share it with my kids. This is a story about two brothers who care for each other. The youngest tries to get help for his big brother who has fallen in the well, but because of the older brother’s super long name he has difficulty expressing the emergency to adults to get help in time.

I read this as a child growing up, it was my favorite book. Of course like most people as you get older you throw away or get rid of things from your childhood and teenage days. When my niece started kindergarten I knew reading was going to be required and i wanted to share with her my favorite story from childhood, so i purchased this book to read to her and hope she will appreciate it as much as i did. Well needless to say she does share my appreciation or enjoyment of this book, but it matters not because i still enjoy this book as an adult.

When I was a child I loved this book so I knew I had to purchase it to read to my children. My daughter has memorized Tikki Tikki's full name and enjoys reciting it with me. This is a classic book! The moral of the story may be a little politically incorrect these days but I don't dwell on that part and if a parent wanted to, they can skip that last page. It's such a fun book to read.

My mom read this to me as a kid, and it was one of my favorites. As an adult I’m not sure how I feel about the cultural messages in the book, but it’s definitely fun to read out loud and the illustrations are pleasing to look at

I ordered this for my boss's granddaughter because it kept coming up in conversation and how I could still remember the kid's whole name (but not his brother's short, simple name, I kept thinking it was Chris, believe it's Chang). The artwork is fun and the book is so absurd, but nostalgia.

12 chapters, 80,000+ words, 22 pages of after notesSurowiecki writes good thumbnails about interesting subjects like the discovery of the U.S. submarine Scorpion, bee dance, how radio was first financed, basic rules of starling flock formation and Newsfutures.com.He also brings up an odd phenomenon: The averages of multiple guesses is usually better than the best individual guess. Because no explanation is offered, it retains the status of miracle throughout the book. In another context he offers an interesting speculation: teams of government and corporate experts are often afflicted with “groupthink”.The rest of the book is about crowds. Two of his criteria that constitute a crowd are independence and diversity. That sounds more like a group of well-informed independent thinkers, not a crowd as we commonly understand it. THE WISDOM OF WELL-INFORMED INDEPENDENT THINKERS is probably a harder title to sell.Surowiecki isn’t even a man of the people. Read page 233 for his endorsement of a paternalistic automatic retirement plan. But none of this keeps Surowiecki from pushing the idea of crowd wisdom. It’s an uphill struggle because most of the examples he provides are expert-heavy and in the case of the stock market, it’s impossible to measure either independence or diversity. Most of his examples involve numerical guesses. Crowd wisdom means that the crowd is a kind of social Ouija board. But what if you need, say, a mathematical formula? But even if you only need number-guessers, what good is a crowd? Businesses and government research get ahead by keeping secrets. How am I going to keep the guesses of 100,000 people secret? Most of the second half is about business. Here are two things to know about that. The first is that no university economic experiment can measure anything worthwhile because millions of real dollars aren’t at risk. The second is that if Surowiecki’s syndicalist ideas worked better than capitalist ideas, they would have taken the world by storm in the 19th century when they were introduced. And if business forecasting is a kind of wisdom, there’s an expert who always beats the crowd. His name is Warren Buffett.2 stars

Crowds have a bad rap. Our opinion of collective decision making and behavior has been darkened by first-hand observation of events such as the stock market bubble and crash, and by classic works such as Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds, and The Crowd: A Study of the Popular Mind. That is unfortunate, argues James Surowiecki because, under the right circumstances, groups "are remarkably intelligent, and are often smarter than the smartest people in them."If nothing else, The Wisdom of Crowds should entertain you. It may not do much more than this if you are already well read in economics, complexity theory, decision analysis, organizational theory, social psychology, prospect theory and other fields. Few readers will have delved into all the relevant areas to any great extent, so most can expect to learn something new, interesting, and quite possibly useful. Surowiecki's wide-ranging gathering of sources to support his argument is a virtue, yet it's also something of a problem. The difficulty of knowing much about all the areas on which he draws makes it easy for him to pick and choose studies and arguments selectively. While many of his points are well made, the way he supports his case sometimes seems one-sided.In evaluating and supporting the idea of the wisdom of crowds, Surowiecki looks at how collective intelligence can be applied to three kinds of problems: Cognition problems (which have definitive solutions), coordination problems, and cooperation problems (which require self-interested agents to work together). The first half of the book sets out the theory, thoroughly and entertainingly illustrated by examples. These include the smarts of the audience on game shows, how to design an excellent search engine, why short selling is a good thing, and how a group finds a lost submarine. The second half of the book applies the ideas to show various ways in which people organize toward common goals in cases such as traffic, science, juries, committees, business organizations, markets, and democracies.Among the main points that may be useful to executives, Surowiecki emphasizes that for the crowd to be wise, it must be characterized by diversity of opinion, independence of members from one another, and a specific kind of decentralization, and there needs to be a good method for aggregating opinions. He stresses that the best collective decisions result from disagreement and contest, not consensus or compromise. While corporations often rely on experts, the book does well at challenging our confidence in expertise as compared to the average of the crowd. In the course of a discussion of the role of independence, we learn that to improve your organization's decision making you should ensure that decisions are made simultaneously rather than one after the other. Finally, I have to second Surowiecki's puzzlement at the apparent lack of interest by companies in using markets (such as decision markets) for corporate strategy and market research.

Suroweiki engrossed me from the beginning. Though this book appears to be a collection of anecdotes about how crowds often outthink the experts, it struck me as a blueprint for how decision-makers should harness the power of people. Thus it is a treatise on smart business and marketing, good government, and sound organization management. As a U.S. Army veteran, the author propelled me to thoughts on how the military could use its people's collective wisdom, something on which I have written extensively:Nine Weeks: a teacher's education in Army Basic TrainingAmong the most relevant claims from the book is this cogent bit of logic:"To state the obvious, unless people know what the truth is, it's unlikely they'll make the right decisions. This means being honest about performance. It means being honest about what's not happening. It means being honest about expectations. Unfortunately, there's little evidence that this kind of sharing takes place....One of the things that gets in the way of the exchange of real information is the deep-rooted hostility on the part of bosses to opposition from subordinates. This is the real cost of a top-down approach to decision making: it confers the illusion of perfectability upon the decision makers and encourages everyone else simply to play along. What makes this especially damaging is that people in an organization already have a natural inclination to avoid conflict and potential trouble. It's remarkable, in fact, that in an autocratic organization good information ever surfaces. It's a book that anyone who has been around people should read.

As a graduate of Marjory Stoneman Douglas, I was extremely moved by the words of art on display by both students and staff throughout this book. I'm inspired and in awe, and I encourage everyone to read this book.

How many times have we heard politicians, concerned citizens, worried Americans utter, post, tweet: “thoughts and prayers,” “I can’t imagine…,” and “we don’t want to be defined by this,” after mass shootings that plague our country? We don’t have the vocabulary for gun violence, even though 100 people die a day from it. We don’t know how to respond, what to say, how to move forward, how to make change. That’s why we need books like, Parkland Speaks. This book is the voice of the students and staff who endured the tragedy at Margory Stoneman Douglas High School just over a year ago. At times in their own handwriting, accompanied with photos, these poems, journal-like entries, anecdotes, memories, illuminate for us the difficult, heart-breaking aftermath of moving forward after trauma. The grief, anger, sadness, ache of missing friends, classmates, students, survival guilt weaves through. It’s a testament of endurance, of saying: I’m still here. This is hard. I’m doing it, but it’s not ok that it happened.I recognize so much of what fills this book, since I, too, survived a school shooting. I was a second grade teacher at Sandy Hook School. My community and colleagues recognize it all; the fear, confusion, the burden, the pain, the people we used to be and have to get to know now….This book is important. It’s a part of our history--the part we don’t see in the media. Read it, talk about it, and maybe even find a way to do something about it.--Abbey Clements, Newtown CT

"Parkland Speaks" gives voice to so many who were forever changed by the tragic and unimaginable events on February 14, 2018. These highly personal poems, essays, journal accounts, photographs, drawings, letters and speeches should inspire all of us to reflect on the need for hope and change in our communities and our country. By sharing of themselves, I imagine they all hope that we too will be forever changed and be called to action to help make our world a safer place.Marjory Stoneman Douglas teacher Sarah Lerner has done excellent work selecting and compiling these submission while telling her own story of that day and what followed. These voices need to be heard and their stories shared. Please buy and read this book to support them. #MSDStrong #neverforget

The emotional personal accounts in these pages make a lasting impression. Written by students and teachers who survived the tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas high school in Parkland, Florida, this book provides an raw and powerful look into how a community and its individuals mourn and try to heal after such immense loss. The book is designed to look much like a high school notebook, which makes the powerful accounts that much more heartbreaking, reminding you that the poems of grief, anger, resolve, and hope are coming from teenagers. Their voices give me hope for the future. This is a must read book to understand the emotional toll of gun violence on the youth of our country.

I don't know what this experience was like, but when I read these accounts I am right there holding my breath, heart pounding, hugging friends. Thank you all for sharing this tragic event with us so that we might have some understanding.

After such a horrible experience, I'm so glad these writers found an outlet to release into. This book cannot be read cover-to-cover in one sitting or with a dry-eye. No matter what your political views are, this book is just a raw, powerful personal account from the victims and survivors. This book helps others understand this. It helps those who are healing to 'see' that they are not alone and hopefully gave them some peace. May they continue to heal!

This was an absolutely amazing and heartbreaking book. I just wish I could be there to comfort every single one of them. This is a must read for sure.

In The Yikes! Zone: A Conversation with Fear, by Mermer Blakeslee

From Publishers Weekly

Ski instructor, novelist (Same Blood) and leader of fear workshops Mermer Blakeslee teaches readers to accept fear "as a habitual acquaintance in an imaginative, meaningful life" in In the Yikes Zone: A Conversation With Fear. Using skiing as a metaphor, she argues that surrendering and "letting go" are an essential part of any creative process one must plunge down that mountain or dive into that new job. While the analogy of the slopes may cloud her advice for nonskiers, there's plenty of encouragement (and examples of folks who've succeeded) in these pages. Mermer Blakeslee's book is a refreshing, thoroughly enjoyable, and masterful perspective on working with the fears that prevent us from achieving our goals. She clearly has equal expertise in writing, skiing and fear. Blakeslee teaches how to live with fear without being controlled by it. It is a delightful, well-written book, a great and unusual combination of being helpful without being "self-helpy."

As this book is out of print, I paid much more than I normally would for a ski book. As it turns out, I feel this is one of the best books I have ever read. It struck a very strong chord with me. I found the suggestions extremely helpful. But more than that, I found sharing the experiences that Mermer had gone through with the people she has coached to be cathartic. I have felt the feelings that were being described (frozen in place, unable to move or to breathe) and I have also experienced the transition to surrendering to gravity and the joy of being able to flow down a trail that had at one point terrified me. To be able to help people (especially women) to understand what this is like and to share in Mermer's descriptions of these experiences and skiing in general (the emotions involved, the fact that skiing is a metaphor for life and the things one can learn about oneself, the love of the sport, the feeling of being in harmony with the world and of being a completely free spirit) is transcendant.

Ms. Blakeslee has written an excellent book for both those dealing with people in fear inducing situations (in her instance as a ski instructor) and those wishing understand their own fears. While it is a fun book to read, it is a book that deserves to be read and reread to fully appreciate all she has to say. She has disected fear and it's origins and offers useful suggestions for over coming it. There is something to think about and ponder on practically every page. Some readers may find using skiing as a metaphor for life a bit of a stretch, but the author more than makes up for it by including many anecdotes to help the reader bridge the gap.Have to close now, time to go back and read the book again.

Mermer's book gave me much more than I bargained for! As a Professional Ski Instructor for Women's Clinics, I found her perspective on fear invaluable. Fear is real - it's not always rational, but it's real and we learn to deal with it. Males and females will both recognize themselves in this book. It was a big help to me not only as a teaching tool, but also in my personal skiing and most recently in a PSIA (Professional Ski Instructors of America) ski exam. Thanks to Mermer, I was relaxed and comfortable. Whether preparing to audition for a Broadway Play or to ski a steep, icy mogul field - this book helps.

"In the Yikes Zone" provided me with the tools to manage my performance anxiety for a recent Professional Ski Instructor Association (PSIA) exam. Mermer's book is filled with real-life anecdotes that the reader can relate to and transfer to their own experiences. "In the Yikes! Zone" lets you know when to push it and when to back-off, and how to manage your fears and emotions through-out. A definite read for athletes and non-athletes, this book is filled with important strategies to handle the many fears we face in all aspects of life.

Ms. Blakeslee's writing captures the reader with thrills and laughter; she takes the experiences of skiing way beyond the realm of skiing. This book helps the reader to use ANY fearful experience as a learning tool to move forward.

More than a skiers book on fear. Mermer demonstrates how to tackle fear head on. If you need a book to get you over the edge....this is the one.
