This man is much maligned in our culture, in an unwarranted way, so as to make his name synonymous with what we would not call "toxic masculinity". But, delving further into his story, Machiavelli was not saying that his treatise was a model for HOW a man SHOULD act, but that in his observation that the described methods WORKED. He didn't necessarily place a moral value on the methods, although he describe potential downsides of utilizing them; he seems to relate them as "this works...this doesn't...this is what to expect...you make the decision how to proceed". Essentially his work on the subject matter could almost attributed as an early observational psychology text on the subject of influence and manipulation. This particular book included some interesting personal correspondence and historical background that gives additional context to his life and his works. Fairly concise, and fairly detailed when necessary. I think it lives up to its name as "The Portable Machiavelli".
This is an excellent selection of Machiavelli's works, which makes it a great book to choose for teaching. I feel, however, that the translation occasionally glosses some of Machiavelli's most powerful terms (e.g. virtu) in a way that conceals their significance for the English reader. However, it is a very readable translation.
So much misconception on an historical figure. This is one of the best translations. Machiavelle is a great historian, among other talents and totally misunderstood in contemporary culture. Read, learn, know the truth about politics and human behavior.
An excellent treatise on the grey area of right, wrong and the greater good. If you have ever wondered why there are times that government 'gets in bed' with someone otherwise undesirable, this examination of the difference between the world we'd like to live in vs the world we have to work in will be most enlightening.A must have for anyone that is or will be in a strong position of leadership.
