Nice book that covers advanced topics in PeopleSoft Application Development. This is not entry level book and I would recommend that you have ample development experience before you attempt to read/try this book. The content is explained nicely and with working code that can be tried as shown in the book. If you are reading this review, it means you are a PeopleSoft developer. I also like the blogs that the author has and follow his blogs regularly. I would recommend purchasing this book if you want to know how to extend your PeopleSoft application (beyond what is presented in PeopleBooks).

There I said it ... Sorry, I keep trying to like this book, but each time I go to it for information on an advanced topic, I get little from it. Just tonight I looked at the chapter on real time integrations. What did I get? As in other chapters, an overly complex example of something I would never use in this case containing about a dozen pages of JAVA code. Also, too much of the examples are "do this, do that, type this" without a thorough explanation of the concepts behind them. The book's title is 'tips' and 'techniques'. I consider tips to be quick and to the point, not endless pages of code that would take hours of study. I will go back to searching the internet and PeopleBooks to find my answers to using Integration Broker for real world problems.

Having attended Oracle Open world session conducted by Jim ( for the past few years) , I was very eager to get a copy of this book.It is an excellent book for seasoned peoplesoft programmers who would like to learn something above and beyond what peoplesoft delivers and use javascript/java within peoplesoft. It is loaded with examples and each chapter builds on the next. It covers quite a few advanced topics. The book will not teach you basics. So if you are trying to learn Peoplesoft or any specific application, please do not buy the book. Buy this when you have a strong understanding of what peoplesoft has to deliver. To a great extent, the book assumes that you know Peoplesoft as well as java, javascript( even if you have rudimentary knowledge, you will find value in this book. )I am still working my way thru the books which is sure to become my reference book for a long time to come.I am extremely happy with my purchase. If you are a seasoned peoplesoft programmer, I highly recommend you buy the book. You will not be disappointed.

This is hands down the best book available for advanced PeopleSoft programmers. Each chapter builds upon the one before so it's very much a training guide as well as a reference manual. The great thing is that once you reach the end of it (no I haven't yet, I'm still working through it) you'll have some really nice bits of code you can use. The chapter on AWE (Approval Workflow Engine) was particularly well done I thought. If you work on PeopleSoft software professionally and are serious about development you should really have this book in your collection. It opened a whole new world of possibilities for me and I've been using PeopleSoft for many years. Here are some more observations:1) To get the most out of this book you should have access to a PeopleSoft database that you can try things out on. It is heavily based on teach-by-example where concepts are introduced and then reinforced by code that you create and run in PeopleSoft. Actually typing the code for yourself will strengthen your understanding of the concepts presented as well as give you visual feedback.2) A lot of the book covers Java, JavaScript and AJAX integrations into PeopleSoft. The author assumes that you already know these languages and does not attempt to teach them to you, other than at a very high level. So don't buy this book expecting to learn those languages.3) If you are new to PeopleSoft development you won't get much out of this book. The target audience here is the seasoned PeopleSoft developer.4) Many of the topics introduced are not documented anywhere else - at least to my knowledge. This makes the book particularly valuable in my view.5) If object based PeopleCode is something new to you then I would get this book for that alone. It's covered very nicely.I wish the Kindle version was available when I bought it but, oh well :-)

I was very pleased with this book after I read it. It is well written, the examples are concise and clear. But best of all, the topics presented are advanced and provide an in-depth view of the possibilities the PeopleCode / Java / JavaScript platform may deliver. This book extends the PeopleCode experience beyond the concepts found in other books and PeopleBooks. If you have experience writing applications in PeopleCode, this book is an excellent reference, I have purchased additional copies for my development team.

This is one of the best resources that I've found to help with various PeopleSoft knowledge transfer. Jim writes in a clear, concise way that is easily understood by both functional and technical SMEs. I use it with day to day activities and for upgrade planning. I've recommended this book to others who have also found it very useful.

Was already familiar with this book because a co-worker had one. So I knew what I was getting. Great book.

A must have book for the PeopleSoft consultant. Jim discuss various tips and techniques that generally is not covered in any other publication.

Review

New York Times Book Review Holiday Gift Guide SelectionNew York Times: One of the Three Best Baking Books of 2018"Lisa Ludwinski’s Sister Pie is everything you want in a pie cookbook: careful directions, baker’s secret tips, inspired combinations (apricot-raspberry-rose, strawberry-pistachio) and a you-can-do-it attitude."- CHICAGO TRIBUNE, TOP 10 COOKBOOKS OF 2018"Bring the wisdom, quirkiness, and fun of the bakery to your home kitchen, and become a better baker along the way."- Epicurious"Spend five minutes with this book and you will want to befriend author Lisa Ludwinski. The book, like the Detroit bakery it’s named for, celebrates community spirit, a serious love of baking, and a playfulness (Ludwinski hosted a 24-hour dance party to raise funds to open the bakery). Pies are organized here by season and are anything but ho hum, with options like blueberry plum balsamic pie and cardamom squash tahini pie."- Food & Wine"Eater’s own national critic Bill Addison says Detroit’s Sister Pie is the best pie shop in the U.S. This fact would be reason enough to order Sister Pie’s first cookbook, a gorgeously photographed and honestly written account of one team’s dedication to flaky pie crust, seasonal fruit, and unique pie-adjacent pastries. But the recipes will also appeal to bakers looking for new inspiration."- Eater"Lisa Ludwinski, who honed her baking skills at Milk Bar and Four and Twenty Blackbirds in New York before opening her bakery in Detroit, has filled “Sister Pie” with 45 thrilling pie recipes, like blueberry-plum balsamic, toasted-marshmallow butterscotch and malted lime. For the anxious pie maker, she includes detailed instructions that are mercifully easy to follow. But it’s not all pies: Thirty recipes for equally adventurous baked goods (peanut butter-smoked paprika cookies, rhubarb blondies) round out this bursting-at-the-seams book."- NEW YORK TIMES (Best Fall Cookbooks)"This stunning cookbook showcases the work of Lisa Ludwinski, whose recipes are nothing less than heartfelt."- FOOD NETWORK MAGAZINE"We'd visit Detroit just to eat at this pie shop."—Bon Appetit“ I’ve often made the three-hour trip to Detroit just to bring back pies from Sister Pie. Lisa Ludwinski’s crust is magic. But Sister Pie isn’t just about the baked goods and pie (even though it’s the best pie I’ve ever had). It’s about the community of the kitchen, the neighborhood, and the incredible city of Detroit. Get the book, make the pie, and let Lisa’s story and optimism inspire you.”— Jeni Britton Bauer, cofounder of Jeni’s and author of Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams at Home“ This isn’t just a book of Sister Pie’s best recipes, it’s a testament to what happens when you build a business that has more than one bottom line. This is a book about a community and about how sustaining community can be so sweet (. . . and savory).”— Julia Turshen, author of Now & Again, Feed the Resistance, and Small Victories“ I’ve yet to find a more lovely place in Detroit than this kitchen full of women making pies. We’re all so lucky that Lisa has distilled her baking magic into a book that we can bake (and dance) our way through at home.”—Joy the Baker, author of Joy the Baker Over Easy"A friendly guide for all things related to fillings and crusts, both sweet and savory. . . . Complete with photographs, helpful hints like “paperclipping” cherries to remove their pits, and uplifting writing (“You did it! You are now ready to fill the pie”), this book will motivate readers to become their own master pie makers."—Publishers Weekly

The recipes are interesting, but I’m so disappointed that the author chose to use volume measurements rather than weights. I just made the dough for the buckwheat chocolate chip cookies, but I spent 20 minutes before I started googling conversions that may or may not be correct. I doubt I’ll be using this book to bake from very often since I’d either need to dirty a bunch of measuring cups or hope that my conversions are correct.

Instructions are easy enough to follow, and some of the narratives are truly humorous. However, I wish there would be more pictures or visuals for the pies, specifically the ones that are not conventional. I mean, there are some pies that we grew up with, so I actually found the pictures redundant, despite adding to the aestheticism. Some pies are creative and original--which I appreciate the ideas--and it'd be greatly helpful to show what they should appear if done right. That being said, if you had the opportunities to try the pie in their store, you may have a sense of what the recipe should look like. If you don't, then you pray that what you have in mind is how they ought to be.

I spent this glorious fall weekend gathering supplies and bopping around the kitchen, making Buckwheat Choco cookies and eggy Galettes! Swoon! My husband said the galettes might be his favorite thing I've baked him! Plus, the book is just so lovely! I love seeing it on my counter. Next up, trying that dramatic crust crimp!

Made the Honey Lemon pie and it turned out great. I liked the texture better than lemon curd. Some of the recipes use cornmeal compared to ground corn in the four and twenty cookbook. The cornmeal is easier to find for me. I'm looking forward to trying some of the other recipes.

This book is gorgeously done. Filled with amazing recipes and stories it’s sure to be a favorite. The pairings of ingredients in each recipe will be the perfect switch from the basic recipes you find in all other books. Beautifully laid out with gorgeous photography - buy this. Gift this. Use this to create new memories around your table

I LOVE baking. I tend to keep a low-carb lifestyle but let me tell you, my willpower was crap when against this bake book and their recipes. I made their crust, which created such a wonderful, flakey, pliable dough, so great and sturdy that I made a braid in the lattice and it was beautiful. I made the salted maple, apple sage gouda, and cranberry crumble for thanksgiving and they were a huge hit! Their story is inspiring, the photos incredible and technique well-tested and it shows. Overall, one of the best bake books I've bought this year, if not THE best bake book. Can't wait to bake more pies and cookies from this bakery. I want to go to Detroit now. Seriously.

I read this book from cover to cover and I thoroughly enjoyed it! I've already baked two different types of cookies and my relatives and friends are demanding more. Next up, I'll be trying to bake a pie, which I feel with all of the easy to read instructions should be easier than I've experienced before. I'm thinking of buying this book for holiday gifts also. A must read!

Beautiful story behind the book! The actual bakery is so inspiring and upbeat! The employees are extremely friendly and the atmosphere feels like I’m sitting in my grandma’s kitchen eating her pie and cookies and drinking her coffee! We thoroughly enjoyed every baked good that we tried in the bakery(between 3 of us we tried a lot!) but the sweet potato pie was the absolute best I’ve ever had! The cookies and some of their interesting ingredients like herbs or buckwheat flour may turn some people off but completely intrigued me to try not because they appeared to be some hipster bakery trying to be cool(it seems so 90s now anyway) but because this was an unpretentious bakery in an old building in a residential neighborhood that was bustling with so much activity and warm and fuzzies that I knew they must know a thing or two about flavors and boy do they ever! This is why I preordered the cookbook and it has not disappointed! The peanut butter cookies with paprika were a pleasant surprise and any of the shortbread cookies were crisp and well represented of the flavor they advertised as. What a story and what a cookbook, particularly if you love success stories from downtrodden areas like Detroit.

Review

“This small, elegant book is filled with the wisdom and artistry of a great man. This collection of Morihei Ueshiba’s sayings and poetry resonates with deep meaning, making this a gem of a book. The book itself is of very high quality—compact and well-bound, with clear print and beautifully reproduced images of Ueshiba’s calligraphy. A CD of the book, read in a clear, calm voice, is also a very nice inclusion. It is an important collection for the reflective artist, and practically applicable to those intent on living a grounded, sensitive life.”—Journal of Asian Martial Arts

Okay, I'll admit it. I picked up this little book after watching TWD's characters Morgan and Eastman 'redirect' attacks with their Jo staves like complete badasses. I'll also admit that only a Walking Dead fan would get the title of this review.I'm fairly certain this is the exact book is used in Season 6, Episode 4 "Here's Not Here" of AMC's The Walking Dead. If you want to see how an Aikido 'master' handles zombies in a post-appocolyptic setting, check out that episode. This book will not teach you Aikido but imparts the philosophy and wisdom of the founder Morihei Ueshiba. The compact size of the book makes it easy to slip in a pocket and get a daily dose of poetic and inspiring prose when your day allows. Each page has one or two sentences on it that are quick to read but require me to spend time contemplating the deeper meaning.Great supplement to The Secret Teachings of Aikido also by Ueshiba or even as an Aikido student!

Read a handful of pages every night. Its a super tiny book which took me by surprise, but very cute. Sometimes i carry it in my back pocket. It reminds me of the whole purpose as to why we are here, and truly.. the art of peace with the world, our surroundings, and ourselves.

New York Times BestsellerThe real way of the warrior is based on compassion, wisdom, fearlessness, and love of nature. So taught the great Morihei Ueshiba (1883–1969), founder of the Japanese martial art of Aikido. Aikido is a disciple Ueshiba called the “Art of Peace.” It offers a nonviolent way to victory in the face of conflict, and he believed that Aikido principles could be applied to all the challenges we face in life—in personal and business relationships, as well as in our interactions with society. These succinct and pithy teachings are drawn from his talks and writings. The collection is compiled by the renowned modern Aikidoist John Stevens, a disciple of Ueshiba.

I have the paperback and the small hard cover edition, but like the Kindle edition best. The extra two parts are solid, especially the history of Morihei Ueshiba. The art work is small but nicely incorporated. Good value for about $5. The content is of course classic and needs no comment for those have read even a little of the art of peace.

I absolutely love this book. It's fairly small and fits in my pocket. I carry it every with me and have read it a half dozen times already. It's really just over a hundred pages of sayings and teachings, but it is a very enlightening book. It keeps me at a level head and keeps me being a loving and kind person.

Awesome little tiny book with lots of powerful quotes. Like many other reviewer's, I ordered the book after seeing it on The Walking Dead Series. No regrets here. Powerful quotes to get you in tune with the universe and what you wish to accomplish in life.

This book is eye opening in many ways. I am by no means religious, at least by typical standards which kind of interoperate certain sections much more different than I'm sure most who go on to read this book. The Art of Peace is a beautiful book that first gives you some background on the original author and how they developed into the person that introduces the Art of Peace and Aikido to the world, and then does a very good job of opening your eyes to see what it is really all about. I feel as if this book has allowed me to look at life and interaction with things and people around me in a completely different way than how I did before I read this book. I will definitely be reading this a few more times to further understand the fundamentals along with reading more material that brings more definition and angle of appearance towards aikido and the Art of Peace.

The edition of “The Art of Peace” that I read is divided into three parts. Part I is a brief biography of Morihei Ueshiba, who was known as Ō-sensei to Aikidō practitioners and other admirers. Part II contrasts the art of war to Ueshiba’s art of peace. Part III is a collection of aphorisms and brief statements outlining the art of peace.Ueshiba is the founder of Aikidō, a martial art that was derived in part from Daitō-ryū Aiki-jūjutsu, but which is distinct from that art in many ways. (e.g. the lack of set forms and emphasis on randori.) Along with Jigorō Kanō, Gichin Funakoshi, and a few others, Ueshiba is one of the pioneers of gendai budō, modern Japanese martial arts that take as their primary aim non-bellicose objectives like sport and self-defense. This is in contrast to the koryū budō (kobudō) which evolved primarily for war fighting. In contrast to Kanō’s Judō, which was first and foremost a competitive sport, Ueshiba’s Aikidō offered a particular approach to self-defense that was purely defensive and in which movement was harmonized to the opponent’s actions so as to perpetrate the least violence possible. The biographic portion of the book is intriguing, but on a few occasions drifts from biography to hagiography. I feel that the suggestion of supernatural abilities does a disservice in the telling of Ueshiba’s story. By all accounts, Ueshiba was an accomplished and highly skilled martial artist, and I would like to read a full biography of his life (a biography exists, but I can’t comment on how well written it is yet.) Given Ueshiba’s pacifistic views, it would be easy to dismiss him as a pie-in-the-sky idealist who had no idea of the realities of the world. I don’t believe that is the case. However, when the biography tells stories of god-like superpowers, it makes it hard to take the man seriously as a martial artist. Either Ueshiba was skilled as an illusionist / mentalist (a distinct possibility) or some of the stories were embellished to deify the man. The story that comes to mind is one in which Ueshiba voluntarily faced a firing squad and emerged unharmed due to either ninja-like or Hollywood vampire movie style actions. This story is attributed to one of his students, Gozo Shioda, who passed away in the 1990’s.We may get an indication of the roots of this appeal to the supernatural in an early statement about Ueshiba’s childhood fascination with individuals like En no Gyoja and Kukai who are themselves attributed supernatural abilities in stories. Ueshiba is clearly a man of faith. He suggests life should be lived on basis of 70 percent faith and 30 percent science. Full disclosure: I’m more skeptical than Descartes, and obviously favor an outlook more firmly rooted in science and rationality.Part two includes extensive quotes from Ueshiba himself. It contrasts the arts of war with Aikidō in mental and physical aspects. A core theme of the book is that the martial arts shouldn’t be about learning to die, but rather learning to live. Ueshiba criticizes the past Shoguns who used the art of war to control people. Ueshiba’s views on the purpose of martial arts are stated in this part. From a physical point of view, Ueshiba emphasizes the lack of forms in Aikidō (Bruce Lee echoed similar sentiments on this subject.) There is an interesting comparison of Ueshiba to swordsman and Zen master Tesshu Yamaoka (about whom John Stevens also wrote a biography.)Part three reads like the work of an ancient yogi in places, and, in other places, offers the stern admonitions to train hard that one would expect from a martial arts teacher. A recurring theme is that the martial artist should purge himself of pettiness, be it in the form of being judgmental, materialistic, fearful, selfish, or malicious. He goes as far as to say, “Be grateful even for hardship, setbacks, and bad people.”Another theme is that one should strive to be natural and to make one’s movement natural. Ueshiba’s advice in this book is about virtue and the mind, and rarely strays into the subject of physical tactics. It does offer a little advice about types of distancing, where one should place one’s gaze, the power of circular movement, as well as discussing technique in the abstract. This is not a criticism. There are other books to learn more about physical technique. However, one should be aware that if one would like to know what Aikidō looks like, this isn’t the book for you. This thin book provided me with a great deal to think about. I’d recommend it for martial artists, as well as for those interested in the life of this extraordinary man.
