Review
“This book shines light where the U.S. government has maintained darkness. Freddie Woodruff was my boss in the CIA. After his murder, it didn’t take very long for me and the FBI agents investigating to figure out there’d been a cover-up, with the key evidence stolen. In a post-truth era, we need a lot more fearless writers like Michael Pullara.” —Robert Baer, bestselling author of See No Evil, The Devil We Know, and The Perfect Kill“Michael Pullara has spent more than a decade in his quest to explain why and how CIA officer Freddie Woodruff was murdered. As a 26-year veteran of the CIA, and trained operations officer, I believe he is as close to the truth of what happened as any human is likely to get. He has produced a masterwork that covers nearly every possible aspect of this troubling case. This is a remarkable book that is at once humanitarian, scholarly, and deeply patriotic.” —G.L. Lamborn, author of Arms of Little Value: The Challenge of Insurgency and Global Instability in the Twenty-First Century“For 10 years, lawyer Pullara pursued the mysterious 1993 murder of diplomat and CIA agent Freddie Woodruff in the Soviet Republic of Georgia. In his first book, he vividly unspools his findings. Pullara does a fine job of sleuthing to get at what he believes is the truth. A highly detailed, engrossing work that incorporates a history of fledgling Georgia amid the author's well-demonstrated ‘passion for mysteries…[and] memory for trivia.’” —Kirkus Reviews“The most comprehensive and exhaustive account to date of what really happened to Freddie Woodruff and why. He has done this with aplomb, utilizing his trial lawyer and analytical and networking skills to piece together a detailed and very readable play-by-play account of his quest for the truth.” —The Cipher Brief“Against great odds and motivated by nothing more than a sense of justice, Michael Pullara sets a standard for idealistic attorneys to strive for.” —The New York Journal of Books“To offer too much about Pullara’s incredible investigation would rob a reader of the taut tension that runs through the book. The Spy Who Was Left Behind moves at the pace of a fiction thriller.” – Houston Chronicle

A unique mix of police procedural, personal memoir and political thriller, this true-life tale of the author's research into the death of CIA agent Freddie Woodruff makes compelling reading. The story involves complex post-cold war political intrigue, but the narrative is tightly driven by the core story of Pullara's investigation into the unsolved murder. A great read.
Freddie Woodruff was a CIA station chief in the former Soviet Republic of Georgia, who was assassinated in 1993 on a remote highway outside of Tbilisi. Michael Pullara is a lawyer with years of experience in the field of international human rights. Their connection is the rural town of Searcy, Arkansas, where they both grew up.In 1993, Mr. Pullara happened on a New York Times article describing the death of Fred Woodruff. He recognized him as someone from a family he knew in Arkansas and wondered what this man had been doing in Georgia that led to his death and to the sham trial of the man accused of murdering him. This curiosity led to his self-styled “quixotic quest†for the truth behind the murder. And to the intriguing story of espionage and international legal wrangling. After extensive research and personal investigations on site, Mr. Pullara was satisfied that he had enough information to help Mr. Woodruff’s family understand what happened in 1993. But Georgia Woodruff Alexander, Fred Woodruff’s sister, learning that an innocent man was in prison, had a challenge for the lawyer who thought he had finished his work: “What are we gonna do, Michael?â€Thus began the real work and the ultimate exoneration of the accused, Anzor Sharmaidze. We follow grueling, painstaking investigations and learn a lot about post-Soviet Georgia, Russia, the CIA, the FBI and international intrigue. It is a fascinating read which gives us detailed insight into the arcane and frightening world of espionageP. Day
I was familiar with the tragic death of Mr. Woodruff as I had worked at US Embassy Tbilisi in the 90s, and had been responsible for processing a number of FOIA requests related to the case. More recently, I thought the matter had been completely forgotten so I was pleased to see the a book had been written about it. I enjoyed the book and I think the author nailed the cultural and political complexities of the era pretty well. However, although there were certainly grounds to be suspicious, I think the author's opinion that Russian intelligence was behind Mr. Woodruff's death is just speculation based on poor analysis and questionable sources. More likely than not, the fellow who was convicted was probably the shooter who killed Mr. Woodruff when he took a drunken potshot at a passing car. Although I don’t agree with the author’s conclusion, this was a good read and would probably make for a good movie.
A most compelling read. Every page filled with political intrigue. A spider's-web of information about post-USSR/Georgian/USA cunning relationships all centered about the murder of a CIA agent. Kudos to the author for his perseverance in getting to the truth behind the murder of CIA agent Freddie Woodruff.
This true story reads like a fast paced suspense novel. It is so well done by a very capable author. You actually get into the head of Oleg Gordievsky and understand his motivation as the disillusionment with the Soviet system builds within him. This book is as good as anything written by spymaster John LeCarre and the fact that it is all true makes it even more fascinating. If I could give it 10 stars I would. It's that good. If you like spy stories this one doesn't get any better.
This is a Great Story, even greater because it is ALL TRUE. It required many years of research. It is interesting to learn about the world of spying.Michael Pullara is a great storyteller. I loved his word choices and descriptions of so many people, events and places. I see why reviews include the comment 'this is his first book.' This is spell binding reading. It will also make a great movie. The Russian names are a bit of a challenge. In the front of the book Mr. Pullara has put a key to all of the names. I kept a sticky note there to help me quickly check on people.
I stopped reading a little over a quarter of the book. I wanted to learn about this murder and how the various governments reacted to it. It was more about the author and his feelings. If there was a "hook" in the story to keep me interested, I could not find it by page 102.
Brilliant first person story. Riveting account of an unknown international incident on the personal level. Great detail. Superbly written. I could not put it down. Hopefully, the author will write more !
