Liked this so much I sent my brother a second copy. Excellent field guide to finding Florida's amazing natural springs. I grew up in Florida and did not know about half of these. Over several return vacations have been checking off photographing several springs each vacation. This trip saw Ichetucknee and Salt Springs, both pristine, turquoise blue and breath-taking. More awareness of these treasures is needed if we are to preserve them for future generations.

Good book for my FL springs trip. The only negative I have is the images for many of the parks are really lacking. The FL Springs are beautiful, but the photos don't do them justice. Also, many pictures are very generic and taken when the leaves have fallen. These don't look like FL Springs when the trees are missing leaves like the fall.

There are a lot of springs in FL. Melissa Watson explains why they chose the ones to highlight in this book. Her writing is interesting and personable while still giving a lot of information on the spring, and the surrounding area to get to the spring, information like it's an uneventful hike with lots of bugs.Although the information is fairly thorough, the pictures interesting, it's also a good starting place to go online and find even more information about a spring.The directions are clear, also there are GPS coordinates. The reason why the spring was included, what's interesting about, facilities or lack of, where the nearest full facilities are, lodging, and pet friendliness.Also included are the rules, like swimming or no swimming, access to the spring, open or cave scuba diving, snorkeling and the temperature of the water.I highly recommend this book.

This book is chock-full of great information. It all seems current which is vital when planning a snorkeling, swimming, paddling or camping trip. My friend is a double amputee so the handicapped accessible springs information was invaluable to my needs.The sole flaw of the book is that few of the images are new. Most seem identical to those in The Springs of Florida. If you want to save yourself some money, don't buy both books. This one has the best information. I'd have given it four stars for repeating the photographs but we desperately needed the information about the handicapped accessible springs. I plan to take my friend to one of the springs

I have been an avid scuba diver and snorkeler for about 27 years now. I have dove many of Florida's freshwater springs, and have a few books on them. I must say, that this book is great. It has an extensive amount of info on many springs all over Florida. Directions, maps, useful info, etc. Great book, very useful. I highly recommend it.....

Bacon abhors padding, and disdains to waste a word; he offers us infinite riches in a little phrase; each of these essays gives in a page or two the distilled subtlety of a master mind on a major issue of life.

There is not much here to say that the other reviewers have not covered: Sir Francis was a truly sharp witted mind, and knew how to write good prose, and how to run his topics and resolutions home to the reader. As style goes, I personally go easily between Aristotle and Bacon in the same day, and often. To me I see much of Aristotle in Francis' works (as in his high-formal writing style), yet it seems he did not know Greek. Most of his quotations and analogies he draws from Latin writers (a large proportion seems to be Virgil and Tacitus; midst a handful of others strewn throughout).As far as Sir Francis' writing goes, theres little bad to say, and a lot of good. This is worth reading for any philosopher, or even anyone trying to get a good hold of formal prose. He might to some seem a tad difficult to read at first, but it shouldn't prove a real obstacle for anyone actually interested in the reading -- after you read just a couple of his essays, you will likely start to get used to his style quickly. I suggest looking in the Contents and just picking out a few that look like topics you couldn't deny interest - that will get you hooked, and into the style.As for the editor John Pitcher, there are many good things, but a certain terribly annoying quality that weighs as heavy as all the good in my opinion.For those who do not know Latin extensively (i.e., limited vocabulary and grammar, or none at all) the annotations are of course great and indispensable. Pitcher also generously untangles Francis' allusions and such, which are helpful also at times.But something that he (Pitcher) follows in other editors of Bacon's works, is complete asinine glossing of words in context which makes complete sense. And he does this extensively. Oftentimes in a work that actually does have an archaic vocabulary, the first glossing of the word is taken to carry its meaning through the essay, but though "estate" is used 10 times in the 2-3 page essay Pitcher will put a note at each occurrence and gloss "state" (not to mention in its context the glossing of that word is obvious and unnecessary). The amount of 'archaic' vocabulary is small and simple throughout the book; a half-page glossary could've been supplied instead of bogging the pages down with redundant annotations of obvious words and thus hurting the actually important annotations.But all that said, this is still a great edition, a great book, great author, and even by the above facts this is probably the best publication of Francis' essays. The annoying glossing isn't too bad after you get used to it.

I first encountered Francis Bacon's "Essays" many, many years ago during college. My copy was a college library edition, so it did not remain a part of my permanent collection. However, some 25+ years later, I purchased the Penguin Classics edition to reread and reminisce about my school days, and I was not disappointed. Personally I found his essays fascinating, eloquent, philosophical, and brilliant. If I were in the same line of work I was in 15 years ago, I would study and memorize some of his quotes and use them in arguments with my colleagues and especially against my enemies.

About the Author

L.G. “Skip” Wade—After receiving his B.A. from Rice in 1969, Wade went on to Harvard University, where he did research with Professor James D. White. While at Harvard, he served as the Head Teaching Fellow for the organic laboratories and was strongly influenced by the teaching methods of two master educators, Professors Leonard K. Nash and Frank H. Westheimer. After completing his Ph.D. at Harvard in 1974, Dr. Wade joined the chemistry faculty at Colorado State University. Over the course of fifteen years at Colorado State, Dr. Wade taught organic chemistry to thousands of students working toward careers in all areas of biology, chemistry, human medicine, veterinary medicine, and environmental studies. He also authored research papers in organic synthesis and in chemical education, as well as eleven books reviewing current research in organic synthesis. Since 1989, Dr. Wade has been a chemistry professor at Whitman College, where he teaches organic chemistry and pursues interests in organic synthesis and forensic chemistry. Dr. Wade received the A.E. Lange Award for Distinguished Science Teaching at Whitman in 1993.   Jan Simek was born to humble coal-mining parents who taught him to appreciate the importance of carbon at a very early age. At age 14, he was inspired to pursue a career teaching chemistry by his high school chemistry teacher, Joe Plaskas. Under the guidance of Professor Kurt Kaufman at Kalamazoo College, Dr. Simek began lab work in synthesis of natural products that turned into research in hop extracts for the Kalamazoo Spice Extraction Company. Returning to Stanford University, Dr. Simek completed his Ph.D. with the legendary Professor Carl Djerassi, who developed the first synthesis of steroidal oral contraceptives.   Dr. Simek’s 35-year teaching career was spent primarily at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, where he received the university’s Distinguished Teaching Award. Other teaching experiences include Albion College, the University of Colorado at Boulder, Kalamazoo College, and the University of California at Berkeley. The cover of the book I ordered looked like the picture and appeared to be the right edition (9th), and all of the text was correct. However, all of the practice problems were different from the real 9th edition. The book was in good condition and helpful for reading information, but it was not usable for any of the homework problems, which was what I actually needed it for.

This book works well for learning organic chemistry, and this version isn't very different from the previous version, it just has some slightly different homework problems (although most are the same, just numbered differently) and there are some charts in the chapter summaries that are very useful.Issues:The Kindle version has a formatting issue with the index thing listing the chapters, they're named strangely ('B_71371_ch01_ptg01_hr.4c' for chapter one) and the chapters are not divided into their sections in the kindle side tab (app for pc). However, all the chapters and their sections can be easily reached from the book's own table of contents just by clicking on them.Also, for some strange reason, chapter 25 is at the end of the book, after all the appendices, indexes, etc., and after chapter 26.I've owned the Kindle version for almost a year now, and none of those issues were ever fixed.I would recommend buying the previous version if you could get it cheaper, unless you absolutely need a kindle version for whatever reason.

This book is seriously terrible. Why does this book discuss radicals in Ch 4? How do you learn radicals before you learn about alkene reactions? It doesn't make sense. I was forced to use this book when I took Organic Chemistry at a community college. Please do yourself a favor and get the Organic Chemistry book by Smith, 5th EDITION!!!!! SHE EXPLAINS EVERYTHING SERIOUSLY

The book was in great condition. It arrived in about 3 weeks. NOT the same edition as claimed, it's an international edition which is the same as the american one but still when you spend $120 on a book you would like to know the exact details. I'm okay with it because I don't plan reselling the book, otherwise i wouldn't keep it.

Just as described. I purchased the new loose leaf book w/access code. Came shrink wrapped and I can see it comes with the access code inside the shrink wrap on the back of the book. I haven't opened it yet, just in case for some reason I bought the wrong thing, but that would be my problem or error, not theirs. Came exactly as expected. 5 stars. Thanks!

Same as Bio, she passed. I don't agree with the "new book" concept in college (are there that many organic chemistry changes a year?). Whatever, that's a dispute for another day...she passed the class and that's what matters. Very convenient having textbooks on here.

I definitely will be looking out for international editions more often. The content was the exact same as the hardcover book required for my class but at a fraction of the price, very glad I bought this

It was a good read but it did not have enough information on cities and counties roll in the state.

This book will never stand on its own. It attempts to introduce far too many ideas in too few pages. It's a lot like Cliffnotes. Used alone, the reader will be left with a skeleton of concepts and ideas...The book is a muddied introduction to the organization, history, and sociology of the state. Ideas are dumped, not explained. Half of the names appear in only one sentence. It left me unable to remember or care about some of the 50+ names. Sections are seldom coherent.I ended up using the TOC to draw up my own organized outline. I filled in the pertinent details using wikipedia and ca.gov. And I paid attention to the newspaper. It worked much better.

This has to be one of the top five books I read in applied linguistics studies. That said, it serves as an introduction, its beauty being it leaves you with a good general sense of pragmatics. It is so clearly written and presented that I was able to 'get it' from one thorough read. It covers the great three: Austin, Searle, Grice and lots of other major contributors to politeness theory. Honestly, this has to be the definitive intro to pragmatics and I wouldn't be surprised if it goes into the next edition.

Well written and well organized. A must for all of those who are interested in the field of pragmatics.

The book is very interesting and has many good points to consider in teaching pragmatics in the classroom. Any teacher would benefit from reading this book.

This book approaches pragmatics from a very different angle: interaction between interlocutors in a conversation or some sort of speech events like that. Due to this fact, I guess, some classicial subdomains of pragmatics are not included, such as presupposition and deixis, and issues like politeness are mentioned. As a nonnative speaker of English, I find it a little bit difficult to leave my dictionaries (note the plural forms of dictionary) far away from me. The wide variety of words with heavey culture-specific information make it hard for even proficient speakers to get the gist immediately.It appears strange to me that why Thomas does not mention the taxanomy she discuss in her article published in Applied Linguistics in 1983. Has she aborted the distinction between sociopragmatics and pragmalinguistics?

This is a book about professional golf by an author who admits in the book that when he he was younger, he didn't really like professional golf. In the book, there are two types of golf: Before Tiger and After Tiger. The book explains that before Tiger, golf was for nerds. It says that those who played it then were not really athletes. They were goofs that the real stud jocks wanted nothing to do with. In its chapter on the Masters, it explains that ordinary golf just used to bore people to death.But then came Tiger Woods who by the account in the book inspired a whole generation of kids through his "power" and "style" that golf could be something other than a goof sport for the unathletic. Tiger Woods seems to have been their Hulk Hogan.The generation of kids who laughed at golf before Tiger then grew up. The book sees them as now transforming every aspect of the game and finishing Tigers work of making golf into a respectable real sport.The book's view of Tiger Woods is less than realistic. It claims that Woods as a golfer only started to decline in 2014. That his decline is all attributable to his "aging body". Realistically, woods has been in decline for years with the reasons for his decline being all over the map.What you get in this book is an attempt to remake golf in Tiger's image through writing. The problem with that is that the new generation of golfers are not little tigers nor do they need to define themselves in terms of Tiger. The book's love for Tiger Woods and contempt for golf before Tiger doesn't do it much credit.These types of books usually appear at the end of particular eras in golf. The old guard (the traditionalists) try to define the new era in terms of the old era. It happened with Palmer. It happened with Jack. Now its happening with Tiger. The author is very much a "tiger" traditionalist. And like traditionalists, he wants to complain about things that don't matter anymore (what golf was like 20 years ago) and pretend that while things are changing, they are not really changing.The book attacks Augusta and the masters by taking on a man who died 30 years ago and long before the author was even born. But you kind of get the impression by the end of the chapter that the problems are not so much with Augusta's past but rather the fact that Augusta doesn't cater to journalists. The book compares Augusta to North Korea and then justifies the comparison with examples such as a complaint about how sportswriters can't use their phones out on the course. The book tells the story of a CBS employee who "just" crossed under the ropes at one of the greens and was stopped by people working for the tournament. The book's examples are unconvincing because they all seem to involve situations where the rules at public events should somehow not apply to journalists. As well, comparing the experience at Augusta to North Korea is more than a bit over the top.The book also operates under the charming false idea that in the old days, the guys on the tour were genteel aristocrats and that the attitudes of the younger guys represent something new. But its not so. The book confuses how golf was *covered* in the old days with what pro golf was really like on the tour. The book never quite gets that what has actually changed is not the golfers, but rather how the media covers the golfers.Even the title doesn't make much sense. The Tiger slayed himself several years ago. Golf has moved on. The book is correct in that there is a new generation of golfers. But its not correct in trying to make all of them into little Tigers or claiming that golf is about making the next tiger or looking for the next tiger.The book could have been better if it had just covered the new generation of players on the tour and left out alot of the attacks on the history of game and left all the Tiger Woods stuff out.

There was much about this book that I liked. Shane Ryan clearly did his research, and the result is an entertaining look back to the exciting 2014 PGA Tour golf season.There were some things that rubbed me the wrong way. Bubba Watson is a controversial figure on the Tour, seemingly loved as much as he's hated. Ryan writes about having poor interactions with Watson, but took criticism to an unfair level. Don't get me wrong - I love a good Bubba-bashing session as much as anybody, but it felt like Ryan was trying too hard to fit in with the, "cool kids" with his almost personal bashing of Watson.The other thing was the Victor Dubuisson chapter. Dubuisson had a good year, but he is not as big of a star that warranted the amount of ink he received in this book. I didn't understand why Ryan felt the need to go as far as he did in tearing down Dubuisson's back story. It wasn't that important, in my opinion.Overall, a fun look back at the last golf season, and a good look forward to the future.

I'm a sucker for almost any golf book that covers the PGA Tour. I loved A Good Walk Spoiled, I loved, Bud, Sweat, and Tees, these books really are my wheelhouse. When I heard about the premise for Ryan's book I was so excited, because there really are a lot of great young talents on the tour, and the thought of focusing on them is a great idea.Unfortunately, Ryan scored with the idea, but failed with the execution. He's not bashful to let the reader know that he's not part of the "golf establishment" but unfortunately he played out that notion not by somehow taking a different view of the Tour, but rather showing how little he knows about it. When Ryan was straight reporting on events, and describing them, he's very good. However, when he's projecting his opinion on what guys were thinking, or how he thought they felt, or why they are so good/bad, he's abysmal. He followed the tour for what appears to be a little less than two years, but somehow has every single golfer he covered all figured out. His opinions on Bubba Watson (who he clearly doesn't like) and Rory McIlroy (who he loves) were laughable at best. My favorite part of the book, because it's so comical, is when Ryan turns McIlroy into some steely eyed assassin who possesses psychological powers beyond any other player, because he refused to talk to Phil Mickelson and Rickie Fowler on the tee box. Ryan claims to have been close to the group, but he obviously projected something that just wasn't there or apparent to viewers at home during the PGA Championship. On TV it simply looked like Rory was very unhappy with his play at that moment, and the fact the tee box was backed up with two groups, it sure didn't appear his ploy to stare mindlessly into space was some sort of psyche out of two of the world's best players.Ultimately Ryan's book suffers from a lot of his favoritism and criticism of the players, and things in golf he just either does or doesn't like. I thought going into the book it may be refreshing to get an "outsider's" view of what can often be a pretty stuffy game, but unfortunately it did more to highlight his inexperience, and sometimes what appeared to be immaturity in dealing with this specific professional sport. The other thing that really hurts the book is just the real lack of editing that seems to have occurred, which I don't completely blame on Ryan, but whoever edited the book appears to know less about golf than the author. If you're able to get past most of the author's opinions and just want a recap of the 2014 PGA Tour season, I could recommend this book, but if you're looking for real insight into the young guns coming up on the Tour, don't bother.
