This is a book about professional golf by an author who admits in the book that when he he was younger, he didn't really like professional golf. In the book, there are two types of golf: Before Tiger and After Tiger. The book explains that before Tiger, golf was for nerds. It says that those who played it then were not really athletes. They were goofs that the real stud jocks wanted nothing to do with. In its chapter on the Masters, it explains that ordinary golf just used to bore people to death.But then came Tiger Woods who by the account in the book inspired a whole generation of kids through his "power" and "style" that golf could be something other than a goof sport for the unathletic. Tiger Woods seems to have been their Hulk Hogan.The generation of kids who laughed at golf before Tiger then grew up. The book sees them as now transforming every aspect of the game and finishing Tigers work of making golf into a respectable real sport.The book's view of Tiger Woods is less than realistic. It claims that Woods as a golfer only started to decline in 2014. That his decline is all attributable to his "aging body". Realistically, woods has been in decline for years with the reasons for his decline being all over the map.What you get in this book is an attempt to remake golf in Tiger's image through writing. The problem with that is that the new generation of golfers are not little tigers nor do they need to define themselves in terms of Tiger. The book's love for Tiger Woods and contempt for golf before Tiger doesn't do it much credit.These types of books usually appear at the end of particular eras in golf. The old guard (the traditionalists) try to define the new era in terms of the old era. It happened with Palmer. It happened with Jack. Now its happening with Tiger. The author is very much a "tiger" traditionalist. And like traditionalists, he wants to complain about things that don't matter anymore (what golf was like 20 years ago) and pretend that while things are changing, they are not really changing.The book attacks Augusta and the masters by taking on a man who died 30 years ago and long before the author was even born. But you kind of get the impression by the end of the chapter that the problems are not so much with Augusta's past but rather the fact that Augusta doesn't cater to journalists. The book compares Augusta to North Korea and then justifies the comparison with examples such as a complaint about how sportswriters can't use their phones out on the course. The book tells the story of a CBS employee who "just" crossed under the ropes at one of the greens and was stopped by people working for the tournament. The book's examples are unconvincing because they all seem to involve situations where the rules at public events should somehow not apply to journalists. As well, comparing the experience at Augusta to North Korea is more than a bit over the top.The book also operates under the charming false idea that in the old days, the guys on the tour were genteel aristocrats and that the attitudes of the younger guys represent something new. But its not so. The book confuses how golf was *covered* in the old days with what pro golf was really like on the tour. The book never quite gets that what has actually changed is not the golfers, but rather how the media covers the golfers.Even the title doesn't make much sense. The Tiger slayed himself several years ago. Golf has moved on. The book is correct in that there is a new generation of golfers. But its not correct in trying to make all of them into little Tigers or claiming that golf is about making the next tiger or looking for the next tiger.The book could have been better if it had just covered the new generation of players on the tour and left out alot of the attacks on the history of game and left all the Tiger Woods stuff out.

There was much about this book that I liked. Shane Ryan clearly did his research, and the result is an entertaining look back to the exciting 2014 PGA Tour golf season.There were some things that rubbed me the wrong way. Bubba Watson is a controversial figure on the Tour, seemingly loved as much as he's hated. Ryan writes about having poor interactions with Watson, but took criticism to an unfair level. Don't get me wrong - I love a good Bubba-bashing session as much as anybody, but it felt like Ryan was trying too hard to fit in with the, "cool kids" with his almost personal bashing of Watson.The other thing was the Victor Dubuisson chapter. Dubuisson had a good year, but he is not as big of a star that warranted the amount of ink he received in this book. I didn't understand why Ryan felt the need to go as far as he did in tearing down Dubuisson's back story. It wasn't that important, in my opinion.Overall, a fun look back at the last golf season, and a good look forward to the future.

I'm a sucker for almost any golf book that covers the PGA Tour. I loved A Good Walk Spoiled, I loved, Bud, Sweat, and Tees, these books really are my wheelhouse. When I heard about the premise for Ryan's book I was so excited, because there really are a lot of great young talents on the tour, and the thought of focusing on them is a great idea.Unfortunately, Ryan scored with the idea, but failed with the execution. He's not bashful to let the reader know that he's not part of the "golf establishment" but unfortunately he played out that notion not by somehow taking a different view of the Tour, but rather showing how little he knows about it. When Ryan was straight reporting on events, and describing them, he's very good. However, when he's projecting his opinion on what guys were thinking, or how he thought they felt, or why they are so good/bad, he's abysmal. He followed the tour for what appears to be a little less than two years, but somehow has every single golfer he covered all figured out. His opinions on Bubba Watson (who he clearly doesn't like) and Rory McIlroy (who he loves) were laughable at best. My favorite part of the book, because it's so comical, is when Ryan turns McIlroy into some steely eyed assassin who possesses psychological powers beyond any other player, because he refused to talk to Phil Mickelson and Rickie Fowler on the tee box. Ryan claims to have been close to the group, but he obviously projected something that just wasn't there or apparent to viewers at home during the PGA Championship. On TV it simply looked like Rory was very unhappy with his play at that moment, and the fact the tee box was backed up with two groups, it sure didn't appear his ploy to stare mindlessly into space was some sort of psyche out of two of the world's best players.Ultimately Ryan's book suffers from a lot of his favoritism and criticism of the players, and things in golf he just either does or doesn't like. I thought going into the book it may be refreshing to get an "outsider's" view of what can often be a pretty stuffy game, but unfortunately it did more to highlight his inexperience, and sometimes what appeared to be immaturity in dealing with this specific professional sport. The other thing that really hurts the book is just the real lack of editing that seems to have occurred, which I don't completely blame on Ryan, but whoever edited the book appears to know less about golf than the author. If you're able to get past most of the author's opinions and just want a recap of the 2014 PGA Tour season, I could recommend this book, but if you're looking for real insight into the young guns coming up on the Tour, don't bother.

I thought I would go out of my mind. The display of my PowerBook G4 went completely haywire. It was rolling around in an absolutely crazy way, as was the additional Samsung display that I always keep hooked up. I tried everything I could think of. I shut the thing down several times and rebooted. I looked at every single item in System Preferences, tinkering here and fooling with things there. Then I took fifteen minutes off to think things over. Then it occurred to me: the last time something weird happened, David Pogue's book got me out of trouble. So off the bookshelf it came, this lifesaver of a book. I spent five minutes in the index (an excellent index in this book -- a great help), and another five minutes in two different parts of the book. Then the answer sprang out at me on page 302: just press option-command-minus sign ! (I had fooled with this an hour ago, not realizing what I was doing.) I did what David P. told me to do, and, I'm telling you, both my PowerBook and my peace of mind returned instantly as if by magic. And, as I said, this is not the first time that Dave has pulled me out of a pickle. Great work, Dave !

Back in the early 90's I bought my first Macintosh, and since I'd had no previous computer experience, I bought David Pogue's 'Macs For Dummies' book. That book, written in a humorous, extremely readable format, easily taught me the basics that I've used all through the years with my subsequent Macs. I recently sent an old eMac to my daughter (this will be her first Mac) that I wiped clean and zeroed out, etc., reinstalled the software & OS, which was Tiger. I also ordered this book for her, so she could learn the way I did, and that has already helped her enormously. I highly recommend these books to anyone who really wants to learn to use and take care of their computer and do it well.

"The book that should have been in the box" is absolutely right! I bought this book when I upgraded from my old iMac running OS 9.1 to a PowerMac running OS 10.4. This book has been an invaluable tool in helping me get up to speed on the look and functioning of OS X. It's written with enough humor to keep it interesting, but not so much that it gets in the way of the information. It's very clearly written, easy to understand. I read the first few chapters straight through, but now that I have my bearings in the new system, it's a handy reference that I can pull off the shelf when I want to look up something specific. I would highly recommend this book to anyone upgrading from OS 9 to OS X.

Mac OS X Tiger Edition The missing manual:This is another outstanding book by David Pogue. This is a much easier read then most technical books that are usually fairly dry reading. This book covers everything that comes with Tiger in great and easy to follow detail with an appropriate number of images for the topic. Chapter one starts with logging into the Mac to organizing your documents to setting system preferences and troubleshooting the Mac and everything in between including Hacking your Mac. The book moves through it's chapters in a nice chronological order.All of the applications that come with Tiger are covered in good detail. Dash board, creating widgets, Spotlight, Apple remote desktop, Sherlock, iTunes, iSync, iChat .Mac, Safari RSS for internet feeds, Automator, iDVD, iChat, iPhoto, iCal, iMic, iMovie, iDisk, iSync and iTunes, Apple Script and Image Capture to name a few.Creating user accounts is covered along with file and directory permissions, configuring the user environment and user preferences, passwords and other elements of security.The books also covers the various aspects of networking including Apple Talk, Rendezvous, Bonjour, IP configuration, Bluetooth, firewire devices, hubs, firewalls, terminal, SSH and routers.The book arrived three days ago and I have been looking through the book and sitting in front of my Mac and have found that everything in the book is accurate.For those that are coming from a Microsoft Windows environment there is a nice section on Windows keyboard commands and how they translate into Mac keyboard commands. It also covers things that you are used to seeing in Windows like Control Panel, My Computer, Network places, modem properties and other things and what their equivalents are in Mac. Basic UNIX is also covered as it applies to the terminal session. It also talks about the reasoning behind going to the Intel processor.There are a lot of great books covering Tiger but I think that this is the best that I have seen. I pre ordered this book four months ago and it was worth the wait.In summary this is a great book for all levels of end user for the truly novice (just came from Windows) users to the advanced user. The books intended audience is not stated but this is a book that is a 5 star book for the novice to intermediate user and a 4 star book for the advanced user.

I purchased an older iMac G4 (iLamp) so I could get my bearings with the Mac. I have never owned a Mac and my time on the OS has been very limited, thus I needed a resource to guide me through some of the details of moving around the OS. This book has definitely fit the bill. It is well written and very detailed. It provides more than enough information to get your system configured and running smoothly. More importantly it gets you comfortable with the OS, which is extremely hard to do in a book. This book, however, does just that!

Being new to the MAC world and looking for a book rather than using the "help" menus, this manual has met my expectations and helped me immensely. It covers wide ranging topics from simple to highly technical and advanced--way more than I'll ever use. Tips are interspersed throughout the book, sometimes several on one page, which are very helpful to the beginner. Screenshots serve as examples. Learned more about my IPOD than I ever knew it could do. I looked at several books in bookstores and purchased one other, but this is the best one I found. If you're moving from a PC to MAC, you will find this book invaluable.

Curtis has two anthologies, one more recent than the other, intended to answer the objections that the first was too centered on the Judeo-Christian tradition(s). I can't recall as I write my review which was which (the other is called "Faith: Stories")--but together they make a good pair for anyone who wants to read and think about the relationship between the human and the divine. I also recommend supplementing them with a third anthology, _A Celestial Omnibus: Short Fiction on Faith_, which is more diverse still.

This is a collection of stories from well known authors. The editor of this collection is providing the reader the opportunity to determine how each author may be using the characters' to present scenarios of goodness/evil.

The stories I have read in this book so far are very different than I thought they would be. I must say they are very intriguing and I enjoy the short story versions.

Good summertime Sunday school reading--brief, well written stories.

I did not connections to God in many of these stories, nor did a few of them make any sense. I did not really care for this collection.

We are using the book in a Bib-Lit Reading Group. We have used several collections - and the short stories in this book are outstanding and thought provoking. Thank you.

Benjamin Lee Whorf, originally trained as a chemical engineer, began his work in linguistics in the 1920s and became well known for his studies of the Hopi language. I used this book in research back in the 60's, while trying to create a theory of learning based on game theory, linguistic analysis and linguistic relativism. Long past my senior thesis days, Whorf's work still intrigues me, especially now that physics has revealed new levels of reality. Back in the 60's, I was just beginning to understand that Wittgenstein was essentially a metaphysician, and that his 'linguistic analysis' was breaking down our conventional view of the world, opening up new approaches to thinking about the nature of reality, Time, Memory, and Meaning. Whorf's writing on the cultural relativism of language and thought was instrumental in opening my awareness to the possibilities of meta-linguistics. Far from being out of favor as one reviewer has stated, Satir-Whorf is the language of today's science and knowledge, and describes the gradual change in how we perceive the world.

One cannot speak of the influence of language on thoughts without mentioning the Sapir - Whorf hypothesis . It is the intriguing idea of linguistic relativity, largely attributed to Sapir & Whorf, which central theme is that culture , affects the thinking of humans through the language. This should be due to the fact that fundamental categories of our thoughts (space, time, object-subject, etc. ) are not the same in all the different languages.What Whorf actually wrote appears to be unknown to most people, especially to those who ascribe to him a hypothesis he had never formulated . What this author actually wrote was , essentially, that the constancy of our language makes us think of a fist or a lightning strike as a " thing "; a slight elevation of the earth is felt as a "thing" different than the surrounding land (a hill ), or the slightly higher water content of the soil leads it to be conceived as a "thing" different than the surrounding terrain ( a quagmire ) . What this author wanted to point out, is the difference between conception and perception. I only can recommend this book although I think that only a small part of it is really interesting.

For a reader like me, interested in language but far from a student of linguistics, some of the essays in this book are beyond me. However, the essays dealing with differences between what are considered languages of the Western world and some of the Amerindian languages prove fascinating. Whorf provides an alternate view of the world through other languages, languages not so rooted in dividing past from present from future as separate entities but in viewing a flowing universe of ever-becoming: a lesson in the journey rather than the destination. I purchased this book after reading of Whorf in Diane Ackerman's An Alchemy of Mind where she references Whorf's marriage of language and developing relativity of the time. This book leads me to understand that languages other than English exist that are far more suited to grasping the philosophy of quantum physics: languages not as static, languages with more movement, allowing for the principles of uncertainty. I like that in a language.

I find some of it interesting. It's not on my quick-reach shelf.

This is a fascinating book on language, and how language shapes reality, or at least the perception of reality. It reads well now, and must have been revolutionary in its day.

This obscure book was written far ahead of its time. Anyone interested in language and human understanding would enjoy reading this remarkable little book.

aloha ! i have written to complain before but i never got a reply. i bought the book for my grandson as a gift. it never arrived. i bought anothercopy that was supposed to be a hardback, first edition. i got a paperback ! the photo clearly shows a hardback. paperbacks do not have thatlong trough down the left hand side ( the binding side.) i wrote about it but never got a reply. two books and i can't get anyone to answer me ?that"s not very good customer service. would appreciate some explanation please. thank you, steve crosson

Important to know - this book is ONLY questions and answers. There is no section for a brief review of material. Maybe this seems obvious by the book description, but its something I didn't realize until after the book came. It does give pretty detailed answers and explanations to the questions, but if you're looking for a book that has review chapters with some questions at the end, this isn't the book to go with.I passed my ARDMS SPI exam with a 682, but I hardly used this book. I relied on the Edelman SPI textbook, with the free 2 weeks of X-Zone access that comes with it. I found that to be most helpful. I honestly wouldn't recommend this book, but I know some of my classmates have had good luck using this as a study tool, so I guess everyone is different.

Wow! This book really helped me pass the SPI. Not only did I pass but I received a high score. I swear half of the test came from Davies. I HIGHLY recommend this book along with Edelman if you don't understand something.

Between this and Edelman, I passed my physics after being out of school for 25 years.

This books questions are way beyond what you will see on ARDMS SPI exam. If you get this book you can actually get discouraged, I had no problem passing the SPI exam. I can appreciate what the authors tried to do but some of this books questions are just completely beyond the scope of what you need to know.

I recently graduated from an accredited ultrasound program and I bought this book as a review. I also reviewed my physics textbook and powerpoint notes and tests from my physics classes (2 semesters worth) to prepare for the SPI. I passed the SPI on the first try but there's no way I would have passed ONLY with this review book. Let me say though that every person's test is different. The questions come from a bank so I think some tests are much harder than others. Others in my class told me questions that were on their tests and they all seemed pretty straightfoward. My test was VERY difficult, and had MANY questions that I had never seen before (ex. what is poise a measure of? the answer was viscosity). I would say this reviewbook covers about 50% of what was on my exam. The other 25% that was not in the book was covered in my school coursework and the other 25% I completely guessed. The only area from the SPI score report that said "may require further study" was Doppler instrumentation and hemodynamics. I got "excellent" in patient care, safety, and communication and "satisfactory" in the other 4 areas. I studied for 7 days about 6 hours a day and I made flashcards based on my textbook, class powerpoints, old tests, and this reviewbook. I completed the test with 30 minutes to spare. This book does cover a lot of topics that are on the SPI and will prepare you for the TYPES of questions that are on the SPI but the actual questions are different. Good Luck!!

I purchased this book to brush up on my physics before I took the ARRt breast ultrasound registry review exam. I found it helpful but it contained way more information than I needed to pass the exam since it was for all types of ultrasound. I just reviewed the questions I felt pertained to the exam. The way this book and the breast ultrasound review book made by the same company were both very easy to use and the explanations to the answers were very helpful!

This book is 100x harder then the spi and will discourage you don’t buy it. Only questions with hardly any informative feedback on why they chose that answer.

Let’s just hope that I can pass the SPI and RVT registries now that I’ve studied the book
