This was a good story, but went in a far different direction than I thought it would. Local politics take a backdrop to a romance between a necromancer and the city commander.It was a little odd. ThatThe city, king, and everything was just background music and not that important.This was a story more about relationships than anything else.
Like the author's previous books which I have read, this story contained strong female characters and a believable romance based on more than just lust, which I appreciated. I really enjoyed the story and the chemistry between the main couple as they get to know one another. Highly recommend for readers who enjoy intelligent romances and fantasy characters..
Full of action with a strong female lead. If you like to read fantasy i think you will enjoy this book. Had a slow start for me but soon picked up the pace with all the action, love, and sadness you could want. I recommend it.
This novel has a wonderful, dramatic and romantic plot. But it has way too much narration and exposition, and not enough dialogue and action. It should show more and tell less.
This book was different than I expected, which is a good thing. I expected more courtly intrigue (I mean, the title says "Princess" so who could blame me?) and more necromancy, but what I got was a well-crafted star-crossed lovers tale, with not-so-subtle messages about prejudice and self-determination. And it's fantastic!Bree and Garrett are well-developed characters with easy-to-follow motivations - no one acts out of character, or in ways that make them in any way unlikable. Bree's done some nasty things in order to survive in hiding, but her motivations are pure, and she's such a sympathetic character, having been banished for something outside her control. She's also feisty, snarky, and self-reliant, which makes her even more likeable. Garrett is a noble character, for all of his poor background - he recognizes that what he's been asked to do to Bree is wrong, and he can't help but feel guilt for it. He's a lawman, but also recognizes that just because something is law doesn't make it right. I was honestly blown away by the character development and the witty dialogue between the 2.I do wish that I'd gotten to learn a bit more about the world, which is why I took off a star. We get a pretty sparse introduction to the world overall, and only a slightly more detailed description of the town of Mountainvale and its different levels. While I understand (and like!) that this tale is truly focused on Bree and Garrett, a bit more context on what's happening and why it's happening would have helped, and I think more descriptions of the land itself (for instance - where the heck are the other kingdoms that have already been captured?) and the past necromancer war would have helped drive the plot in the few spots where it lagged.I think that this author will have to be added to my Must Read list, and I've already bought books 2 and 3 so that I can finish the saga!~I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review~
Before I start, let me preface this by saying I was given a copy of this book for free in exchange for my fair and honest review.I know that statements like the above can be off-putting about the authenticity of a review, but stay with me here. This book really was good and worth reading. I don’t feel cheated or that I wasted my time with it (and believe me, lately I’ve been hitting that rut with books that I’ve gotten…I blame my book club for this).WHAT I ENJOYED: What caught my attention first was the premise I read for this story. I read plenty of fantasy novels (favorites being by R.A. Salvatore, Diana Wynne Jones, Brandon Sanderson and so on), so I liked how the plot of this novel wasn’t something I had already encountered before and was original. I also liked how this story advertised itself as a fantasy AND a romance (because I’m a sucker for that kind of thing).I really enjoyed the two main characters, Bree and Garrett. Their conversations, chemistry, the bickering, the sarcasm! Lordy, the snark of these two! I laughed a few times, smiled more, and have a couple scenes bookmarked for re-reading just for the sheer humor and fun of it. I love when there are characters that are sarcastic and don’t take themselves too seriously and scenes that really highlight the humor and add to the charm of it all.WHAT COULD BE BETTER:This is my personal preference here but I need some more world building. Who is the king (because I don’t remember if his name was ever given other than he is Bree’s cousin)? And this war in the past that sparked all this necromancy hating…I need to know more about this war. I get that necromancers are considered bad because of this bad war, but maybe some more details? I understand it was horrific, but horrific because why? Yes the dead walked, and attacked people? Did they eat them? Go for the brains of children, virgins, and the hearts of puppies AND kittens? Take everybody’s left shoe? I need a little more information so I can understand the reactions of the people in this world. What was so horrible during this war that soured the country so deeply on necromancy that they killed babies for having this gift? Why do they hate the idea so much that they truly revile people who have this ability?OVERALL:I definitely enjoyed this story. I loved the plot and felt it moved at a good pace. However, I do feel that some parts may have been a bit rushed (like the big battle); but, that said, it didn’t take anything away from the story for me (so I really can’t complain).I tend to judge books by how hooked I was during reading it; as I could not put this book down once I started, I consider my time well spent.What I find most exciting, and why I’m not deducting stars on world building here, is that it’s part of a trilogy! So I’ll be looking forward to the sequel and (hopefully) having some of my questions about this world answered ïŠ
