I was looking for a neuroanatomy review book before studying neurology and this was my choice after reading BRS Neuroanatomy, High-Yield Neuroanatomy, and Neuroanatomy: An atlas of Structures, Sections, and Systems. I chose this book for several reasons. First, the pictures were the most clearly explained ones (the enhanced illustrations of the anatomical sections and the 3-D drawings of the nervous pathways). Second, the title of each chapter is very relevant in terms of main clinical correlation between the anatomical structure and the neurological defect(e.g. The cerebellum: Ataxia), so if you want a 2 min review of major neurological complaints/anatomical localization of the lesion, just scan the table of contents. Third, the book is full of clinical correlations inserted in the text when the relevant anatomical structure/pathway is discussed. The last chapter provides principles for locating lesions with clinical illustrations, very useful. There is a glossary and an atlas of myelin-stained sections. This edition also has two-color illustrations.
This was a required text for our neuroanatomy course, which for me was a dificult class to follow. This book helped clarify most things and was very well written to the level that a grad student could easily comprehend the material. This was pretty much what our lectures and exams were based on, and I've heard from other students that this is a great book to use as an aid for board exams. The only drawback for me was the lack of color in the figures provided in the book. Most of the time, our professor would highlight certain parts in color in their lecture slides, or they would refer to the Netter's Anatomy text which I would highly recommend if you are more of a visual learner for gross anatomy. The more in depth detailed cranial nerves and pathways are well depicted in this book though, so I would use that to study off of.
first year medical students buy this, was the best 39 dollars i spent. follow it is flow, match your lecture's topics to it. read and reread will make you master a nightmarish subject. very concise, covers basic anatomy, histo, physio of each section along with so needed neuroscience. diagrams are simple, black and white but that is what the brain sections are anyway. you will appreciate in the lab. questions are not MCQ format, and it is intentional to be so to test that you really got it. i purchased Neuroanatomy: An Atlas of Structures, Sections, and Systems and i used it a little, has a lot of MCQ questions and all the diagrams you may need.
I love this book! It's making my neuroscience class much more enjoyable because it's written in easy to understand language and even though the pictures aren't great, they are helpful for explaining the text. Using this book with a good neuro atlas works great. I like that it includes lesions and it goes along with my neuro class. It's totally saving me this quarter because my course is being taught by an instructor who is making all this neuro stuff very confusing! I know I will keep this book for future reference.
This book is truly one of a kind. I don't think you can learn all of neuro by simply reading this book. However it does a good job of simplifying all of the information in easy to read drawings and diagrams. The neural pathways are illustrated very well. You would still need to supplement this book with a neuroanatomy atlas. Finally, the last chapter on localizing lesions is an excellent 15 minute overview of how the CNS can be damaged, and what various lesions would cause. The titles of the chapters themselves teach you alot. Get this book.**UPDATE**I don't think i stressed enough what an amazing job this book does in simplifying the neuronal pathways. For that reason alone it is really worth the purchase.
First of all this book is in excellent condition. The access code for the website resources for the book is still brand new and unused. And last of all I would someday like to cross paths with it's previous owner. I am in awe of the amazing job they did highlighting while studying. This is the most efficient set of notes I've ever seen that manages to still cover all vital information. Jussayin, my super nerd self would love to be this person's friend!😂
This was a pretty helpful book. I used it for my neuro course in medical school. I actually read it between semesters (break before neuro started) in hopes that I would be able to hit the ground running once the course started.Overall I found the text to be easy to read and understand, and I do believe that reading it before my actual neuro course was very helpful!
I am a medical student. Neuro was rocket science to me until I found this. I used to loooove this book. Until I lent it to someone who loved it more than me and never returned it. Moral of the story, when you do buy this book and fall in love with the way it explains topics, DON'T LEND IT TO ANYONE, if you want to see it again!
