A few years ago, only a handful of Americans appreciated Italian cookies beyond the familiar amaretti. An explosion of interest in Italian cooking has changed all that, and biscotti and pizelles now appear in restaurants and bakeries from coast to coast. Sanchez, bakery owner from Waterbury, Connecticut, has built a business based on production of Italian cookies, and she now shares her recipes. Some Italian cookies, such as nut-studded biscotti, require special techniques, being twice baked (the literal meaning of biscotto). Others, including bar and drop cookies, more directly recall typical American cookies. Frizzelle, spiked with both fennel seeds and a prodigious quantity of black pepper, add a new dimension to the cookie baker's art. I should have looked at the reviews, because the top review is right--there are no pictures which makes it hard to know what you want to make and at the same time this feels like a beginner's cook book. There is no mention of the add ins you can add to the chocolate clove cookies, and the peach cookies use peach jello powder as a coating. I'm not unhappy since it's pretty much what it says it is, but I'm fairly disgruntled at getting the equivalent of a spiral bound church cookbook in a pretty cover.
This cookbook does not have photos or illustrations in the recipes. Thus it is hard figure out what the cookies are supposed to like when you make yourself. The recipes are simple, too simple for me. The book does not contain traditional wedding cookies. I compared the sweet Taralle to those on the web. The recipe for Taralle in this book omits cooking them in hot water for a short, which is part of almost every Taralle recipe on the web. This leaves me wondering if I will be wasting 1/2 dozen eggs, sugar, vegetable oil on this book's recipe.On a positive note, the stories are charming. But I did not buy this baking book for the stories about the author's reminesces about her childhood.I was so excited when I ordered this book, now I am really annoyed that I ordered. I may return it depending on the hassle of the return procedures.
I read from beginning to end without scanning for pictures. I expected bright colorful cookies of all kinds. By starting from the beginning I realized this was the real deal. Tidbits of information, tips, family traditions, To me , very useful. But I do miss the pictures!
I would have liked to see either photos or illustrations (drawn if nothing else) for each cookie. But that would probably increase the cost of the book, so I can make do this way.The book has some stories to go with the recipe, which I love, because food and life are intertwined so closely you can't really separate them. It was nice to see a peak of the author's memories as she tells about each recipes.The directions are easy and clear. Ingredients are found at home or easily located in local stores. Nothing exotic to hunt for. Delicious cookies too. Very nicely formatted and presented.I bought this book and also one specifically for Biscotti. I am very happy with BOTH books.
Recipes. The ingredients are simple enough to get and the recipes are simple enough for a beginner. I expected more and there were no pictures.
Bought this as a gift for my parents. And then I stole it back because I loved it so much. Over Christmas, I made pizzelles and almond macarons from the book; both came out great!
Lots of authentic Italian cookie recipies. All are quite easy too make. There are many variations on some of the cookies
