Where's the meat? He forgot all about the economics part. Totally disappointed because I was hoping for a book geared to helping small businesses Navigate the complexities of social media. Instead, Qualman gives lots of opinions with no facts, no studies, not even any success stories for businesses. In fact, his only success story at all is about the Obama campaign and he uses it over and over again.He gives a few examples of big business and brand building But he never gives numbers, ROI, or revenues generated.. His idea of success is for businesses to just give everything away for free; God forbid you should even ask for the email address in exchange because according to him your consumers are just going to flame you.It's pretty dated as well because most of his references are from 2008 and 2010. Most frustrating of all is the total lack of economics, and lack of a strategy for an existing small business to profitably benefit from social media.Skip this book and pick up something bye Jeff Walker or Perry Marshal and you'll be far better off.

Qualman does a very good job telling the reader why social media and social media marketing are not flash-in-the-pan fads that will be gone within a few years. Savvy marketers and brand builders must understand the new media environment in which they are operating and embrace it as the future. It is how things will be for a long time to come. Qualman helps you understand the environment and offers some insights on how others have leveraged social media to their perceived advantage.The problems I have with this book stem from my perception that the author offers what seem like well pondered conclusions but reveals no data, no research and very little support evidence or hard quantitation so I was left to wonder if these "facts" are based on hard data or on the author's own biases and cheery assumptions.He seems to talk about the 2008 U.S. presidential election a little too much throughout the book which is a bit annoying for business professionals looking for application and then late in the book Qualman delves into human resource management as related to social media and it just seems to go a bit overboard. Advice like, "[hire young talent and] simply get out of the way because the young talent may be vastly more talented in certain areas" may be accurate but it is so vague and general that it is worthless advice. One assumes he means that because young talent is much more in tune with social media that they will be able to perform better at job functions that have ties to social media, but again, no specifics, no details and no supporting evidence for this claim. It is at these moments in the book that it seems the author is a bit too much of a kool-aid drinking cheerleader simply repeating, "this changes everything." We've heard all the hype already. Now let's get down to specifics. His passion is clear but hard data is lacking.That being said, the overriding message of this book is important for all business managers who need to understand how social media changes the game and why they cannot wait to embrace the future with social media touching just about every aspect of business and consumer behavior. Qualman makes the case as to why it isn't all going away anytime soon.I recommend this book for those new to social media or those managers who still need to be convinced that it is the future direction of marketing. If you are already familiar with the space and are looking for advanced "how to" methods and detailed case studies then this is probably not the book for you.--Review by the author of the e-book, "How to Build and Manage Your Brand (in sickness and in health)."

As an instructor of Social Media Marketing (Google Jason McDonald and Social Media) , I am always looking for new ideas and new topics to share with my students. Qualman has a good way with words, pointing out - for example - that "Word of Mouth" is becoming "World of Mouth" via Social Media, but in many ways the book reads more like a New York Times magazine piece than a practical guide to Social Media. Especially for businesspeople or marketers seeking to leverage Social Media as a marketing venue, this book falls short.Much of the book deals with the now obvious trends in Social Media. Seeing what your friends like, or buy, on Facebook encourages you to buy the same. Or, if you are researching a new type of baby carriage... knowing what similar friends recommend is a good thing. More interestingly, Qualman points out that nothing remains private for ever on the Internet - we all live in Glass Houses - so be careful what you post - both companies and persons. He also indicates that Social Media is often supportive, or intertwined, with traditional marketing, as in the Saturday Night Live spoofs of Sarah Palin that went viral and also boosted traditional viewership of SNL.So, as a magazine piece or journalistic read, this is a decent book. I am always looking for Social Media Marketing ideas for myself, my students, and my clients... and here there are good tidbits but no overarching conceptual framework. The author criticizes Google and pay-per-click advertising and points out how advertising on Facebook or LinkedIn may be more valuable, since it is based on profiles rather than keywords. Using Social Media for advertising or marketing should have been a major focus of a book marrying economics and social media, but unfortunately it is a relatively minor part of this work.All in all, a good - but no great - read.

There is (yet another) fight raging in science. This one is over how we evaluate other vertebrates. In this fascinating and eye-opening compendium, Frans de Waal says we are prejudiced towards ourselves, always comparing animals’ performance to ours, in unfairly biased experiments designed for us. It bothers people that we are not unique, and it bothers de Waal that animals don’t get the credit they deserve. Ranging all over the world and all over species, the book is an endless marvel.de Waal gives the example of a chimp named Ayumu at a research center in Japan, who can routinely memorize nine numbers in any given order, having seen them for just one fifth of one second. He can then pick them out in order from random numbers presented to him all over the computer screen. No human comes close. That’s a problem for a lot of scientists. The book is full of examples of animals, birds and fish doing highly intelligent things naturally. Our tests twist and pervert their skills to fit the test, showing them less intelligent than they are. We draw the wrong conclusions, often by asking the wrong questions. de Waal shows the way to a far more appreciative and objective way of looking at the world.My own favorite story in prejudice occurred when scientists induced pain in the feet of mice to see if they could be made to hide it. They found that mice could put on a brave face, but only when a human male tended to them. For females, they let their guard down; they freely showed their suffering. The difference was so strong that it worked even when scientists simply placed a man’s t-shirt near the cage. The mice were totally focused on fear and ignored their own pain. This said two things: mice could hide their own pain, and every experiment using mice is to some extent invalid, prejudiced by the mere presence of humans. Male or female scientists will cause different results.To that story, de Waal adds attention, motivation, and especially cognition, giving animals the full range of unlimited possibility, including communication (bottlenose dolphins call to each other by name). It is actually true respect. Possibly the most telling sentence about primates (de Waal’s focus) is that the caretakers in a primate center have greater respect for the intelligence of the animals than do the psychologists and philosophers who run the experiments.Every being is magnificently adapted to its habitat and needs. That they have different strengths, some or none of which might also be present in humans, is basically irrelevant. A look into experimental science. “The credo of experimental science remains that an absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.”8. One of the recurring themes of this wonderful book is the importance of conducting well-constructed experiments. “Their earlier poor performance had had more to do with the way they were tested than with their mental powers.” “The challenge is to find tests that fit an animal’s temperament, interests, anatomy, and sensory capacities.”9. A fascinating look at the field of evolutionary cognition. “The field of evolutionary cognition requires us to consider every species in full.”10. I truly hated one thing about this book - it ended! Now I have to read everything else Frans de Wall has written and I'll never get the laundry done. A powerful and important book. So many fascinating stories, examples, experiments and all of it written in clear, concise language that even I could follow. Elephants, ravens, dolphins, wasps, chimps, oh my! I vividly remember my 8th grade science teacher telling the class that what separated us from animals was our ability to make and use tools. Oops.I especially was drawn to the idea that learning depends more on social connections than incentives. Throw away those stickers! Rapport trumps rewards every time. If I were in charge of the world, I'd make this required reading for every teacher.We have a very narrow "umwelt" indeed.

POINT OF VIEWMy standpoint as a reader of the book I would describe as 'experienced in algorithms', an expert in learning systems, but an amateur in music production - including computer-generated - and composition. My special interest in reading the book was the question of which methods are currently used to enable computer-generated music. Specifically I'm interested in how a computer program may be made able to 'learn' to play and and to compose music.A GREAT WEALTH OF MATERIALThe book 'Algorithmic Composition' provides undoubtedly a very broad introduction to the topic. The concepts of algorithm, markov model, generative grammar, transition networks, chaotic systems, Lindenmayer systems, genetic algorithms, cellular automata, artificial neural networks, and artificial intelligence are discussed conceptually, and examples are given for each chapter. At the end of each chapter you will find final assessment, where the strengths and weaknesses of the discussed algorithms for the purposes of the composition are pointed out.ALGORITHMS AND COMPOSITIONPerhaps it is no coincidence that the book does not begin with a detailed representation of the compositional process, but with a very extensive chapter (almost 60 pages) about the development of the human sign systems, the concept of algorithm, the development of machines for computation (computers), and the foundational issues of computability and decidability by a computer. What is missing is a similar introductory chapter about to the composition process. While the introduction about the concept of an algorithm provides a good framework for all the subsequent chapters, the concept of 'composition' remains a little 'in the air'. Even in the final discussion this gap is not really closed. Possibly does this lack express the limits of a representation of such a complex topic as 'algorithmic composition' , otherwise this can be seen as a challenge for a possible future revised edition, in which the concept of a - certainly idealized - compositional process will be elaborated to an extend which allows a better interaction with the different algorithmic methods.Within each chapter, as in the concluding discussion, the book repeatedly makes clear that between the great diversity and complexity of challenging pieces of music and the possibilities of algorithmic formalization has always been gaps, which will not be closed easily by a formalization. This is due not only to the limits of formalization - which has not yet been fully exploited - but also due to the conceptualization of the phenomenon of composition as such. We are always able to play or to compose music, but not so readily we are able to talk the same time about our doings in an 'appropriate conceptual' way (even 'great' composers like Bach, Mozart, Beethoven would not have been able to describe their process of composition in each case in a sufficient theoretical manner).ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE?While the preceding chapters are quite clear about the different algorithmic methods, the chapter on 'Artificial Intelligence' is unsatisfying. Nierhaus himself points out at the beginning of the chapter that the very notion of 'intelligent' or 'intelligence' is used very inconsistently in the literature. This short chapter about AI is no remedy from this fuzziness of the field (one should notice that the algorithmic concepts of all preceding chapters are today in use within the context of so-called 'intelligent' systems or in the context of 'machine learning', the preceding chapters therefore deal already 'somehow' with 'artificial intelligence').EVALUATIONDespite the criticisms in detail, I would like to award the book five stars because it deals with a complex issue in a way that gives a good inroad for everybody who wants to understand the field a bit better. In particular I appreciate the thoroughness of the individual chapters combined with helpful further readings.

I cannot praise this book highly enough. It is open and clear, and really makes a significant crack into the world of algorithmic composition. In addition, each chapter is extensively and conscientiously followed by a list of source publications that promise endless hours of enlightening research. It is a significant and elegant contribution to the field of computer music.

I was going to buy this but luckily I found a copy in my uni library. This book has many errors and it only covers style imitation, not musical composition. I was amazed that the author even admits this in the book, and goes on to erroneously say that real algorithmic composition is not the subject of the book. I have just been looking around, and I found this review very helpful:The basics of the key tools of algorithmic composition are adequately covered in this book, and as such it does a mostly competent job of presenting them fairly clearly, but only in the realm of style imitation and despite many detailed errors. One of the things I found while reading the book was that I wished for an included disc, or even a Web site, with the musical examples available for playback so that I could quickly listen to them. I hope that the publisher and author consider this, as it would improve the book as a teaching resource. I also found the numerous errors misspellings, and typographical errors to be distracting, and potentially worrying.I approached this book with a large degree of enthusiasm and optimism, unfortunately I left it feeling disappointed.The emphasis on style imitation in the book and the lack of discussion of "genuine composition" is, I feel, a great shortcoming. There was an important opportunity here togo beyond style imitation--to me, as a composer, it is the least interesting or useful aspect of algorithmic composition--and delve into the more difficult realm of creative composition of compelling musical works. Furthermore, the book does not delve into algorithmic sound synthesis(surely still micro-composition), or examine in detail how some composers have used algorithmic principles to create great works, let alone attack the core issue itself. While the systems outlined in the book may be applied in a range of ways from the superficial and trivial to the very sophisticated, nowhere is the problem addressed of what musical composition really is. This has been a problem with some other books on algorithmic style imitation, but to my mind, musical composition is something other than the application of a set of rules (particularly music theory rules), and it goes beyond this. Style imitation already has a large body of literature; I feel this book does a competent job of pulling much of it together, but it has missed an opportunity to go further and add to the literature on algorithmic approaches to genuine composition.Maybe if I'm doing musicological research on specific styles, this book would be useful, but not for a composition student or working composer.

I have been using other study guides and sources for months, but decided to purchase this for the practice tests. So far I have only skimmed through some of the questions and answers. What I have noticed so far:1. An answer was incorrect (the description of the answer was correct, but the actual answer was incorrect. Think it may have been a typo.2. Speaking of typos, there have been several, including repeated choice answers for a question.3. The language is simple and tests the very basic concepts and information. If you are just starting out studying for the NCE, this may be a good guide to test what basic concepts you know and don't know. You can then study the basic concepts more in depth.4. The guide does offer explanation for why an answer is correct, which can be helpful if you are unsure or confused.Overall, I don't feel like it's a waste of money if you don't rely solely on this for studying. I have been using Dr. Rosenthal's Encyclopedia of Counseling, as well as his audio, which I have found to be VERY helpful so far. He gives explanations for all the correct answers, as well as reasons why other choices are not correct. The audio offers an overview of all the content areas and is like a mini-review of my grad degree.My suggestion: Use as many practice tests and study guides as possible because they can offer insight as to the content and material that will be on the exam.*Side note: I have yet to take the exam. I will be taking it on 4/18/15, so after I take the exam I will edit my review and comment on the material on the exam versus the material in the study guide.

This book, which contains two sample tests, creating a feeling of a genuine examination, as the answers to the questions were not given until after the test. Furthermore, it was extremely helpful that detailed explanations of the correct answer were also provided in the answer key. This helped me refresh my memory in order to remember and learn the material more effectively. The explanations increased my confidence level, as I feel that I re-learned my graduate school counseling material in an effective manner.

A nice tool to have; however, I would like to have more study information included with the practice tests and further explanation about the answers. This is especially important for persons who have been working in the field and put off the exam for years; perhaps not so important for those just out of school and finishing a graduate internship. Nonetheless, an added tool for preparation.

All you get are 2 100-question tests with the answers and "explanations". It doesn't tell you how many questions are actually on the real exam (mine had 110) or how long you get to do the test (the proctor told me 165min but I think he was including 15min to learn the software. Pretty sure I had 150min for the exam). Anyway, I passed the exam but only because I spent 6 weeks studying the CliffNotes book for it.

The quality of the questions and information in this workbook is very low. Just stick with the recommended materials from the state licensing website. I got one of the books on that list, The Encyclopedia of Counseling, and that is way more helpful than this. This is like a pathetic review. Much of the information is actually incorrect. I made a ton of flash cards based on the encyclopedia so I think I'll pass. I'll update after.

The questions in this booklet are awful. They are so poorly written, it’s impossible to understand what they are asking. Stick with cliff’s notes.Update: I just took the test and PASSED and I can confirm that the questions in this test are NOT like the ones on the test. They are poorly written and confusing. Use Cliff’s. It definitely prepared me for the test. The questions were exactly like those on the test.

This booklet has been very helpful so far! The questions are written very well and are easy to understand. It's simple and to the point- and the answers in the back give a great explanation!

I Supervise LPC-Interns in Houston,Texas. I have used the Mometrix practice exams for test preparation for years with excellent results. I highly recommend this NCE Test study materials for persons who are testing soon.
