Curtis has two anthologies, one more recent than the other, intended to answer the objections that the first was too centered on the Judeo-Christian tradition(s). I can't recall as I write my review which was which (the other is called "Faith: Stories")--but together they make a good pair for anyone who wants to read and think about the relationship between the human and the divine. I also recommend supplementing them with a third anthology, _A Celestial Omnibus: Short Fiction on Faith_, which is more diverse still.

This is a collection of stories from well known authors. The editor of this collection is providing the reader the opportunity to determine how each author may be using the characters' to present scenarios of goodness/evil.

Book in excellent condition.Thank you.

The stories I have read in this book so far are very different than I thought they would be. I must say they are very intriguing and I enjoy the short story versions.

Good summertime Sunday school reading--brief, well written stories.

I did not connections to God in many of these stories, nor did a few of them make any sense. I did not really care for this collection.

We are using the book in a Bib-Lit Reading Group. We have used several collections - and the short stories in this book are outstanding and thought provoking. Thank you.

Good stories, got any more like them?

I used this book in research back in the 60's, while trying to create a theory of learning based on game theory, linguistic analysis and linguistic relativism. Long past my senior thesis days, Whorf's work still intrigues me, especially now that physics has revealed new levels of reality. Back in the 60's, I was just beginning to understand that Wittgenstein was essentially a metaphysician, and that his 'linguistic analysis' was breaking down our conventional view of the world, opening up new approaches to thinking about the nature of reality, Time, Memory, and Meaning. Whorf's writing on the cultural relativism of language and thought was instrumental in opening my awareness to the possibilities of meta-linguistics. Far from being out of favor as one reviewer has stated, Satir-Whorf is the language of today's science and knowledge, and describes the gradual change in how we perceive the world.

One cannot speak of the influence of language on thoughts without mentioning the Sapir - Whorf hypothesis . It is the intriguing idea of linguistic relativity, largely attributed to Sapir & Whorf, which central theme is that culture , affects the thinking of humans through the language. This should be due to the fact that fundamental categories of our thoughts (space, time, object-subject, etc. ) are not the same in all the different languages. What Whorf actually wrote appears to be unknown to most people, especially to those who ascribe to him a hypothesis he had never formulated . What this author actually wrote was , essentially, that the constancy of our language makes us think of a fist or a lightning strike as a " thing "; a slight elevation of the earth is felt as a "thing" different than the surrounding land (a hill ), or the slightly higher water content of the soil leads it to be conceived as a "thing" different than the surrounding terrain ( a quagmire ) . What this author wanted to point out, is the difference between conception and perception. I only can recommend this book although I think that only a small part of it is really interesting.

For a reader like me, interested in language but far from a student of linguistics, some of the essays in this book are beyond me. However, the essays dealing with differences between what are considered languages of the Western world and some of the Amerindian languages prove fascinating. Whorf provides an alternate view of the world through other languages, languages not so rooted in dividing past from present from future as separate entities but in viewing a flowing universe of ever-becoming: a lesson in the journey rather than the destination. I purchased this book after reading of Whorf in Diane Ackerman's An Alchemy of Mind where she references Whorf's marriage of language and developing relativity of the time. This book leads me to understand that languages other than English exist that are far more suited to grasping the philosophy of quantum physics: languages not as static, languages with more movement, allowing for the principles of uncertainty. I like that in a language.

EVER TAKEN DRUGS? THIS BOOK IS A MUCH BETTER TRIP OF 'RELATIVITY'THINK YOU HAVE A FIRM GRIP ON -YOU? WE ARE IN A LINGUISTIC BUBBLEFLOATING BY OTHER CULTURAL BUBBLES DOOMED TO POP WITHOUTEVER RECOGNIZING WHAT WE HAVE IN COMMON OR - NOT

I find some of it interesting. It's not on my quick-reach shelf.

This is a fascinating book on language, and how language shapes reality, or at least the perception of reality. It reads well now, and must have been revolutionary in its day.

This obscure book was written far ahead of its time. Anyone interested in language and human understanding would enjoy reading this remarkable little book.

aloha ! i have written to complain before but i never got a reply. i bought the book for my grandson as a gift. it never arrived. i bought anothercopy that was supposed to be a hardback, first edition. i got a paperback ! the photo clearly shows a hardback. paperbacks do not have thatlong trough down the left hand side ( the binding side.) i wrote about it but never got a reply. two books and i can't get anyone to answer me ?that"s not very good customer service. would appreciate some explanation please. thank you, steve crosson

Important to know - this book is ONLY questions and answers. There is no section for a brief review of material. Maybe this seems obvious by the book description, but its something I didn't realize until after the book came. It does give pretty detailed answers and explanations to the questions, but if you're looking for a book that has review chapters with some questions at the end, this isn't the book to go with.I passed my ARDMS SPI exam with a 682, but I hardly used this book. I relied on the Edelman SPI textbook, with the free 2 weeks of X-Zone access that comes with it. I found that to be most helpful. I honestly wouldn't recommend this book, but I know some of my classmates have had good luck using this as a study tool, so I guess everyone is different.

Wow! This book really helped me pass the SPI. Not only did I pass but I received a high score. I swear half of the test came from Davies. I HIGHLY recommend this book along with Edelman if you don't understand something.

Between this and Edelman, I passed my physics after being out of school for 25 years.

This books questions are way beyond what you will see on ARDMS SPI exam. If you get this book you can actually get discouraged, I had no problem passing the SPI exam. I can appreciate what the authors tried to do but some of this books questions are just completely beyond the scope of what you need to know.

I recently graduated from an accredited ultrasound program and I bought this book as a review. I also reviewed my physics textbook and powerpoint notes and tests from my physics classes (2 semesters worth) to prepare for the SPI. I passed the SPI on the first try but there's no way I would have passed ONLY with this review book. Let me say though that every person's test is different. The questions come from a bank so I think some tests are much harder than others. Others in my class told me questions that were on their tests and they all seemed pretty straightfoward. My test was VERY difficult, and had MANY questions that I had never seen before (ex. what is poise a measure of? the answer was viscosity). I would say this reviewbook covers about 50% of what was on my exam. The other 25% that was not in the book was covered in my school coursework and the other 25% I completely guessed. The only area from the SPI score report that said "may require further study" was Doppler instrumentation and hemodynamics. I got "excellent" in patient care, safety, and communication and "satisfactory" in the other 4 areas. I studied for 7 days about 6 hours a day and I made flashcards based on my textbook, class powerpoints, old tests, and this reviewbook. I completed the test with 30 minutes to spare. This book does cover a lot of topics that are on the SPI and will prepare you for the TYPES of questions that are on the SPI but the actual questions are different. Good Luck!!

I purchased this book to brush up on my physics before I took the ARRt breast ultrasound registry review exam. I found it helpful but it contained way more information than I needed to pass the exam since it was for all types of ultrasound. I just reviewed the questions I felt pertained to the exam. The way this book and the breast ultrasound review book made by the same company were both very easy to use and the explanations to the answers were very helpful!

This book is 100x harder then the spi and will discourage you don’t buy it. Only questions with hardly any informative feedback on why they chose that answer.

Let’s just hope that I can pass the SPI and RVT registries now that I’ve studied the book

Advances in Financial Machine Learning

Review

"In his new book Advances in Financial Machine Learning, noted financial scholar Marcos López de Prado strikes a well-aimed karate chop at the naive and often statistically overfit techniques that are so prevalent in the financial world today.  He points out that not only are business-as-usual approaches largely impotent in today's high-tech finance, but in many cases they are actually prone to lose money.  But López de Prado does more than just expose the mathematical and statistical sins of the finance world.  Instead, he offers a technically sound roadmap for finance professionals to join the wave of machine learning.  What is particularly refreshing is the author's empirical approach — his focus is on real-world data analysis, not on purely theoretical methods that may look pretty on paper but which in many cases are largely ineffective in practice. The book is geared to finance professionals who are already familiar with statistical data analysis techniques, but it is well worth the effort for those who want to do real state-of-the-art work in the field."—Dr. David H. Bailey, former Complex Systems Lead, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Co-discoverer of the BBP spigot algorithm "Finance has evolved from a compendium of heuristics based on historical financial statements to a highly sophisticated scientific discipline relying on computer farms to analyze massive data streams in real time. The recent highly impressive advances in machine learning (ML) are fraught with both promise and peril when applied to modern finance. While finance offers up the non-linearities and large data sets upon which ML thrives, it also offers up noisy data and the human element which presently lie beyond the scope of standard ML techniques. To err is human but if you really want to f**k things up, use a computer. Against this background, Dr. López de Prado has written the first comprehensive book describing the application of modern ML to financial modeling. The book blends the latest technological developments in ML with critical life lessons learned from the author's decades of financial experience in leading academic and industrial institutions. I highly recommend this exciting book to both prospective students of financial ML and the professors and supervisors who teach and guide them."—Prof. Peter Carr, Chair of the Finance and Risk Engineering Department, NYU Tandon School of Engineering "Marcos is a visionary who works tirelessly to advance the finance field. His writing is comprehensive and masterfully connects the theory to the application. It is not often you find a book that can cross that divide. This book is an essential read for both practitioners and technologists working on solutions for the investment community."—Landon Downs, President and co-Founder, 1QBit "Academics who want to understand modern investment management need to read this book. In it, Marcos Lopez de Prado explains how portfolio managers use machine learning to derive, test and employ trading strategies. He does this from a very unusual combination of an academic perspective and extensive experience in industry allowing him to both explain in detail what happens in industry and to explain how it works. I suspect that some readers will find parts of the book that they do not understand or that they disagree with, but everyone interested in understanding the application of machine learning to finance will benefit from reading this book."—Prof. David Easley, Cornell University. Chair of the NASDAQ-OMX Economic Advisory Board "For many decades, finance has relied on overly simplistic statistical techniques to identify patterns in data. Machine learning promises to change that by allowing researchers to use modern non-linear and highly-dimensional techniques, similar to those used in scientific fields like DNA analysis and astrophysics. At the same time, applying those machine learning algorithms to model financial problems would be dangerous. Financial problems require very distinct machine learning solutions. Dr. López de Prado's book is the first one to characterize what makes standard machine learning tools fail when applied to the field of finance, and the first one to provide practical solutions to unique challenges faced by asset managers. Everyone who wants to understand the future of finance should read this book."—Prof. Frank Fabozzi, EDHEC Business School. Editor of The Journal of Portfolio Management "This is a welcome departure from the knowledge hoarding that plagues quantitative finance. López de Prado defines for all readers the next era of finance: industrial scale scientific research powered by machines."—John Fawcett, Founder and CEO, Quantopian "Marcos has assembled in one place an invaluable set of lessons and techniques for practitioners seeking to deploy machine learning techniques in finance. If machine learning is a new and potentially powerful weapon in the arsenal of quantitative finance, Marcos' insightful book is laden with useful advice to help keep a curious practitioner from going down any number of blind alleys, or shooting oneself in the foot."—Ross Garon, Head of Cubist Systematic Strategies. Managing Director, Point72 Asset Management "The first wave of quantitative innovation in finance was led by Markowitz optimization. Machine Learning is the second wave and it will touch every aspect of finance. López de Prado's Advances in Financial Machine Learning is essential for readers who want to be ahead of the technology rather than being replaced by it."—Prof. Campbell Harvey, Duke University. Former President of the American Finance Association "The complexity inherent to financial systems justifies the application of sophisticated mathematical techniques. Advances in Financial Machine Learning is an exciting book that unravels a complex subject in clear terms. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone interested in the future of quantitative investments."—Prof. John C. Hull, University of Toronto, Author of Options, Futures, and other Derivatives "Prado's book clearly illustrates how fast this world is moving, and how deep you need to dive if you are to excel and deliver top of the range solutions and above the curve performing algorithms... Prado's book is clearly at the bleeding edge of the machine learning world."—Irish Tech News "Financial data is special for a key reason: The markets have only one past. There is no 'control group', and you have to wait for true out-of-sample data. Consequently, it is easy to fool yourself, and with the march of Moore's Law and the new machine learning, it's easier than ever. López de Prado explains how to avoid falling for these common mistakes. This is an excellent book for anyone working, or hoping to work, in computerized investment and trading."—Dr. David J. Leinweber, Former Managing Director, First Quadrant, Author of Nerds on Wall Street: Math, Machines and Wired Markets"In his new book, Dr. López de Prado demonstrates that financial machine learning is more than standard machine learning applied to financial datasets. It is an important field of research in its own right. It requires the development of new mathematical tools and approaches, needed to address the nuances of financial datasets. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who wishes to move beyond the standard Econometric toolkit." —Dr. Richard R. Lindsey, Managing Partner, Windham Capital Management, Former Chief Economist, U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission"Dr. Lopez de Prado, a well-known scholar and an accomplished portfolio manager who has made several important contributions to the literature on machine learning (ML) in finance, has produced a comprehensive and innovative book on the subject. He has illuminated numerous pitfalls awaiting anyone who wishes to use ML in earnest, and he has provided much needed blueprints for doing it successfully. This timely book, offering a good balance of theoretical and applied findings, is a must for academics and practitioners alike." —Prof. Alexander Lipton, Connection Science Fellow, Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Risk's Quant of the Year (2000) "How does one make sense of todays’ financial markets in which complex algorithms route orders, financial data is voluminous, and trading speeds are measured in nanoseconds?  In this important book, Marcos López de Prado sets out a new paradigm for investment management built on machine learning. Far from being a 'black box' technique, this book clearly explains the tools and process of financial machine learning. For academics and practitioners alike, this book fills an important gap in our understanding of investment management in the machine age."—Prof. Maureen O'Hara, Cornell University. Former President of the American Finance Association "Marcos López de Prado has produced an extremely timely and important book on machine learning. The author's academic and professional first-rate credentials shine through the pages of this book - indeed, I could think of few, if any, authors better suited to explaining both the theoretical and the practical aspects of this new and (for most) unfamiliar subject. Both novices and experienced professionals will find insightful ideas, and will understand how the subject can be applied in novel and useful ways. The Python code will give the novice readers a running start, and will allow them to gain quickly a hands-on appreciation of the subject. Destined to become a classic in this rapidly burgeoning field."—Prof. Riccardo Rebonato, EDHEC Business School. Former Global Head of Rates and FX Analytics at PIMCO "A tour de force on practical aspects of machine learning in finance brimming with ideas on how to employ cutting edge techniques, such as fractional differentiation and quantum computers, to gain insight and competitive advantage. A useful volume for finance and machine learning practitioners alike."—Dr. Collin P. Williams, Head of Research, D-Wave Systems

TLDR: the book is awesome, it really is on another level, and you will be stuck in the past if you don't ingest this book.If you are not in the target audience I think you will find this book hard to digest. Also I have read some chapters twice and worked through the code samples, so I believe I offer a perspective that other readers may be lacking. Marcos has given a number of lectures titled “The 7 Reasons Most Machine Learning Funds Fail”, you can find the lecture slides online. The seven core ideas in that lecture are covered in chapters 2-8, with other chapters offering supporting details, or going further in depth. If you have limited time to process the book, I think you would be better served by taking a deep dive on chapters 2-8, rather than skimming the whole thing. The ideas in this book work, and you would be doing yourself a disservice by not reading this book. Some of the ideas range from the common sense (backtesting is not a research tool, feature importance is) to the heretical ("fordecades most financial research has been based on over-differentiated (memory-less) series, leading to spurious forecasts and overfitting.") [That quote was in his 7 Reasons presentation from Quantcon 2018, not the book.] He offers compelling arguments and solutions backed by peer reviewed publications for all his points. The book would be a highly valuable reference even without the code snippets, but he provides functional code and even tools to make it work on large datasets. Once again this code is not for the faint of heart, his use of Pandas will leave even a seasoned financial developer to RTFM.There are some flaws which I can overlook. Strict software engineers will be irked at the code violating PEP8. It is hard to put code samples into a book so things like multiple statements per line can greatly compact the code and make it readable. In chapter 20 he uses threads and processes interchangeably although they are two distinct tools. Chapter 22 felt a little out of place but it seems compulsory for financial authors to include a "just for fun" final chapter. There was a quick discussion at the end of Chapter 14 on performance attribution, which felt rushed and I feel it would be hard for the non-financial portion of the target audience to follow. These are minor items. I found at least three errors in the code which I hear have been corrected in the second printing. It is arguable that the ideas in this book could be extended to any asset class. If I had to guess, I would say this was often applied to trading futures, although bonds, equities, and equity options are briefly mentioned.

I have run through a quick pass of the entire text in one sitting, so I may possibly re-read more in depth and alter my review at some point in the future. My impression is that the text reads a bit like an academic survey of some existing ML methods applied to quantitative finance, a bit heavy on theoretical models and sourcing many fairly recent papers culled from various financial and machine learning literature, many referenced from the author himself. However, the author also points out that he has a lot of experience in the quantitative field and elaborates a bit on the overall systematic step by step process of development that a real team of quants might use. Don't expect an in depth description of specific implementations (like SVMs, Gradient Boosting, NNs,etc), but a more general approach to the various learner methods. The Good:I enjoyed getting his perspective on the overall flow and piece by piece breakdown on each of the steps involved in the process of developing a ML based algorithm, from data collection, partitioning, and scrubbing, all the way to the design and execution phase, including a lengthy description of some of the pitfalls and possible solutions to using various cross-validation methods, in order to gain better confidence in financial data and algorithms, that many already know suffer from characteristics like non-IID properties, data overlap, and time dependencies. On the more concrete side, he also presents many standalone python based functions to concretely implement many of the concepts that he describes. The bad:While it definitely reads like it is written from someone with a strong theoretical background, and much experience in the financial field. I also, felt that it fails in that it never really integrates all of the build up to a practical example of a systematic design implementation, that uses many of his ideas and demonstrates their validity. In other words, do not expect any top level concrete design or systematic design and back-test examples with real financial data and results at all. It is mainly bits and pieces of the pipeline that ultimately may go into a complete systematic development of a system, but no real evidence that any of it is of use, other than to take the author's word, or just accept the theoretical modelling. To clarify further, it's ok to point out the shortcomings of classical portfolio optimization, but show a clear example of an ML based portfolio optimization; how does it perform using various validation methods compared to classical? Using real, cleaned financial data.It would definitely be useful to see at least one complete implementation of a system that utilizes the methods described within. In addition, concepts like quantum computing are great and all, but when you've been at this development long enough, the more fancy and advanced the tools sound, they don't really bring all that much to the table, if you can't even develop a successful system or algorithm at a much simpler level (which is not easy).update(s): I'll just add that, after a closer reading, hasn't really changed my opinion much. However, if it helps anyone I found an excellent simulation of HRP, using real financial data on ilya kipnis great R based blog, QuantStratTradeR. This is the kind of empirical data, that would really add value to the text.

Having spent more than two decades on equity desks building cash and options systems, it is refreshing to come across a book that is so comprehensive. The first part of the book tackles the construction of a data strategy. Marcos provides both theoretical foundations as well as practical examples for those building a data plant geared towards both general trading as well as focusing on machine learning driven strategies. The second part of the book focuses on extending basic machine learning concepts to financial data. The author spends a lot of this section focusing on validation techniques specifically for financial features. The third section of the book focuses entirely on backtesting. In this section, he develops a number of novel approaches to backtesting machine learning models as well as measuring the performance of those models. The fourth section delves into some of the most important ML features in financial markets and how to build models around them. The last section focuses on how to scale your ML models with both off the shelf software, high performance computing hardware(via LBNL's CIFT Project), and quantum computing approaches(via quantum annealer from D-WAVE). All in all, the book provides an excellent roadmap for building and operating ML based trading strategies.

It Was Never About the Babe: The Red Sox, Racism, Mismanagement, and the Curse of the Bambino, by Jerry M. Gutlon

Review

"Jerry Gutlon's It Was Never About the Babe: The Red Sox, Racism, mismanagement, and the Curse of the Bambino is an astute, anecdote-rich journey through the shadow of darkness. . . . Gutlon really hits his stride, however, when it comes to the 44-year regime of Tom Yawkey, an era of 'cronyism, poor management, racism, and downright stupidity' during which key decisions were arrived at by the owner in conference with his 'steam-bath buddies.' . . . . The book travels through the team's recent glories to the present and includes a nice stash of photos." ----Boston Globe

If your a Red Sox fan, you should purchase this book. It will give you an idea why it took so long for the Red Sox to win a World Series.

As a Red Sox fan, I was shocked to see how they took so long to evolve. It only makes them more loveable now!

fine expose of the ownership of the red soxs and the problems caused by its racism

It took awhile before I couldn't put this book down, but had to stay up late to finish it.As a Red Sox fan, it is great to be able to look behind the scenes. Although the author could have found better editors, I gave this a 5 star rating because the book made me a more knowledgeable fan!

ok book....although some info is wrong

Every die hard Red Sox fan will never forget the seventh game of the 2003 American League Championship Series... when manager Grady Little refused to remove pitcher Pedro Martinez from the game... thereby blowing a 5-2 lead... which would have probably... ended up with a win... that would have propelled the Red Sox into the World Series... instead... the ensuing loss... not only cost the Red Sox a trip to the Series... but it added on another year... to the previous EIGHTY-FIVE-YEARS... without a World Championship... and as most Sox fans would vociferously state... it also... rightfully cost Little his job. When you have an author that writes the following: "LITTLE STUBBORNLY REMAINED IN THE SOX DUGOUT UNTIL THE GAME WAS TIED AT 5-5. BY THEN, THOSE OF US OLD ENOUGH TO REMEMBER BUCKY ("BLEEPING") DENT'S DYING-QUAIL HOME RUN OFF MIKE TORREZ IN THE INFAMOUS 1978 ONE-GAME PLAYOFF AGAINST THE YANKS WERE FRANTICALLY SEARCHING FOR THE NEAREST EXHAUST PIPE TO SUCK ON. I WAS HAVING FLASH-BACKS TO 78."... You know you have a true... die in the wool... Red Sox fan... who just happens... to also be a writer! That is the case with author Jerry Gutlon... and since the reader becomes aware of this early on in this story... it makes the historical... pain and anguish... along with some ups and downs... that the author shares with the reader... on a literary journey... through the history of the Red Sox... a little easier to take... because you are made to feel... like you're sitting in a local bar... commiserating with a fan just like you... who has had the same EIGHTY-SIX-YEAR "cursed-trip"... that was passed down from Father to son to son.In 1990 Boston Globe sportswriter Dan Shaughnessy "penned his 1990 fairy tale, "THE CURSE OF THE BAMBINO"... and since it was a catchy phrase... it was repeated with religious like fervor throughout baseball. After all... it made great headlines. Jerry Gutlon's sole goal in this book... is to disprove this... and show the reader... that rather than a curse... the greatest enemy of the Red Sox during the EIGHTY-SIX-YEAR-DROUGHT... was their own ownership and management. The fact that it was a racist organization is hard to dispute... since they were the absolute last team in baseball to have an African American player... and that wasn't until 1959. They had a manager... Pinky Higgins... who "swore that no African-American would play for the club while he was managing." And he certainly didn't use the term African American. In fact due to local pressure from a Boston City Councilor... on October 23, 1945... ONE-HUNDRED-NINETY-ONE-DAYS before Jackie Robinson signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers... the Red Sox gave a private tryout to three black players. One was future Hall Of Famer Jackie Robinson... and another was Sam Jethroe... who would win the National League Rookie Of The Year award in 1950. The Red Sox showed absolutely no interest... and during the tryout... in a near empty stadium... a voice from up in the stands yelled... "Get those N***'s off the field!" In fact... manager Joe Cronin sat up in the stands and turned his back on the players most of the time. If that wasn't enough... in 1950 the Red Sox had "options" on any player on the Birmingham Black Barons... a Negro League team... and a scout told... now General Manager... Joe Cronin... about a "five-tool-player"... by the name of Willie Mays... Cronin supposedly remarked, "We have no use for the boy at this time."From 1933-1976 the Red Sox were owned by Tom Yawkey... whose drinking... along with his racism... created much bigger obstacles to winning a World Championship... than any curse ever did. He tended to hire mangers and general managers... that liked to drink with him. He also overpaid ballplayers... and tended to prolong his contractual mistakes. Playing for the Red Sox in the Yawkey days... was described from racial terms... as being on the "plantation"... and from an overpaid side... as being at a "country club". "Baseball historians have confirmed that the bigotry that beset the franchise emanated from the very top" "The funny thing about the Yawkey regime is that they didn't like anybody," asserted Clark Booth. "They didn't like blacks. They didn't like Catholics. They didn't like Jews. The Anti-Defamation League brought a suit against the Red Sox in 1959 for discriminating against Jews."The author set out on a goal of disproving the misguided catch-phrase... "The Curse Of The Bambino"... and in my opinion... he succeeded.

Another history of the Boston Red Sox? Haven't enough trees fallen already in the examination of that particular subject?Well, that depends on your viewpoint, naturally. Red Sox fans love reading about their team, warts and all, and a variety of books have been written through the years. Indeed, "It Was Never About the Babe" quotes many of them. That might be the biggest problem with author Jerry Gutlon's book on the team. There's just not much new.Gutlon's driving concept is that "The Curse of the Bambino" -- the idea that Boston's trade of Babe Ruth led to a series of misfortunes in the 86 years the team went between championships -- never existed. The author blames bad management, who in some cases were out and out racist, for the woes that befell the team over the years. No one really believed in a "curse," I think, although it was a convenient way to wrap up the team's woes into a single phrase. Therefore, Gutlon is on target there. The author obviously did a lot of research in putting together the Red Sox story over the years. The bibliography is crammed with books, newspapers, publications, Web sites, etc. I only noticed a couple of little typos in terms of factual errors, such as saying the Yankees won four straight World Series from 1950 to 1953 (they also won in 1949), or that Johnny Pesky was fired after 1963 (it was 1964).But most of the material in the book is obviously taken from other sources. There are bunches of references to Glenn Stout and Richard Johnson and their fabulous book, "Red Sox Century" (which received five stars here), during the course of "It Was Never About the Babe." Stout and Johnson obviously took plenty of time to talk to Gutlon. But it does beg the question, why not just go read "Red Sox Century"?Gutlon did talk to Luis Tiant, Curt Schilling, a few reporters on the scene in Boston, some fans, and a former Red Sox executive, at least as far as can be told by the acknowledgments. Otherwise, though, there's a lot of second-hand information. So there are just very few new insights available here. That's fine when you are writing about the 1903 Boston Red Sox, with no one alive to discuss it. It's different when focusing on the last 45 years of Red Sox history. Stringing together facts and quotes, as is done here, has term paper-like qualities. There's also a danger to that technique when stories get passed along. For example, Gutlon writes that analyst Bill James advocated a "closer-by-committee" system for the bullpen. Others have written that; James actually wrote that sometimes it would make more sense to use a team's best relief pitcher against the other team's best hitters in crucial late-inning situations, even in the seventh or eighth.Gutlon does note in a couple of places that requests for interviews with certain individuals, such as Terry Francona and Theo Epstein, were "ignored." That's a mighty strong word, even without my knowing the circumstances. The attitude does, however, fit in with a paragraph like this from the acknowledgments: "Two years of covering Pike County government straight from the shoulder and without favor earned me the everlasting gratitude of a large number of West Central Georgians, most whom had never dealt with a reporter who tirelessly endeavors to report the truth, no matter the cost."In addition, Gutlon makes some very curious editorial decisions. The 1978 playoff game between the Yankees and Red Sox certainly had tons of significance to Boston's history, but is dismissed in a paragraph. The 2004 ALCS comeback by Boston also is given virtually no coverage, which is out-and-out stunning. Those who do pick up "It Was Never About the Babe" will get a quick course in Red Sox history. They should keep in mind, though, that's it's been done elsewhere, and done better.

Beneath the Stone: A Mexican Zapotec Tale, by Bernard Wolf

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 6-Although the subtitle might imply that this is a folktale, it is in fact a photo essay about a contemporary Zapotec Indian family living in Oaxaca, Mexico. The title refers to their village-Teotitlan del Valle, which means "Beneath the Stone in the Valley," so named by the people who settled there some 3,500 years ago. Wolf focuses on the daily life of six-year-old Leodegario Vicente Golan Ruiz. Vivid full-color photographs capture the boy and his family as they buy food and cook meals; go to school; weave tapetes (rugs/wall hangings) and sell them in Oaxaca City; and celebrate Los Dias de los Muertos, the anniversary of the Mexican Revolution, and Christmas. The lively text clearly explains what is going on in the pictures and highlights the dual nature of contemporary Zapotecs, whose cultural traditions are descended from the ancient Indians as well as from the Spanish conquistadors. The importance of family, community, and heritage in Leo's life comes across in both photos and text. By following him through his daily experiences, the author has made the boy's culture accessible to readers, who will recognize similarities as well as differences between his and their own ways of life. A pronunciation guide, map, and a two-page history of the Zapotecs makes this book useful for assignments. However, it will also be pored over and read for pleasure. Gr. 4-6. Despite the word tale in the title, this book is a nonfiction photo-essay. Full-color photographs and text follow six-year-old Leo and his family through several months in their mountain valley village near Oaxaca City, Mexico. Leo's family, Zapotec Indians, are weavers. Everyday home and school activities are presented, as well as celebrations for The Days of the Dead (in which adults toast with bottles of beer), the anniversary of the Mexican Revolution, and Christmas. The text discusses the economics of a family business, and it avoids an emphasis on "quaint" activities. A map, a pronunciation guide, and a summary of the Zapotec's place in Mexican history are provided. Mary Harris Veeder

literalContent: 'A Lexile® measure represents either an individual's reading ability (a Lexile reader measure) or the complexity of a text (a Lexile text measure). Lexile measures range from below 200L for early readers and text to above 1600L for advanced readers and materials. When used together Lexile measure help a reader find books at an appropriate level of challenge, and determine how well that reader will likely comprehend a text. When a Lexile text measure matches a Lexile reader measure, this is called a "targeted" reading experience. The reader will likely encounter some level of difficulty with the text, but not enough to get frustrated. This is the best way to grow as a reader - with text that's not too hard but not too easy.',

This is a great book about a nice family. I met Antonieta in Ajijic, Mexico and bought several of her beautiful tapete wall hangings.

I met the woman who is featured in this story and have one of her weavings that i treasure. I met her in Ajijic, MX and she showed me the book so I had to come home and buy it. Interesting story that I enjoyed.

I thought the book was larger

the book is great! and the shipping and the service was great! thanx 1 hell of a lot! and have a nice day! ya'll!

This is a book geared toward the young reader, but anyone with an interest in the Zapotec weavings and culture will find it a heartwarming and quick read. While visiting Oaxaca over Christmas I had the priviledge to meet Antoinetta in her kiosk at the Zocolo. This gracious lady introduced me to the book as well as to the beautiful works of her family.
