I so very badly want to give this book five stars.It's the closest any book could ever come to explaining Mexican taco culture to an outsider, in all its informal, hyper-local, insanely delicious diversity and variety. I've learned about tacos I never heard about even when I lived there, and there are interviews, quotes, and even social media posts from taco fanatics and chefs that bring deep dimension to the taco. It's loaded with cartoons, maps, funny illustrations, interviews, and other errata that's just delightful. Representative recipes are included, too. It's a fond, rich book-length love letter to a food and its surrounding culture that I love too, and it's inspired me to go on a weeklong taco binge of epic proportions. I wouldn't even necessarily call it a cookbook, as most of its running length is essays, profiles, and description rather than recipes.However, there are two major demerits.- The book is cheap. Dull, rough stock, an odd, floppy cover, and construction that doesn't inspire confidence. It's a damned shame that this didn't come with a hard cover and wasn't printed on the glossy stock that its vibrant colors, cartoons, and photography demand. This is the sort of paper novels and so on are printed on - and not the nice first-run hardcovers, but more like that of a paperback. This is a book that will never be used in the kitchen. because a grease splot would soak through the next five pages.- The recipes are hit or miss: Many of the included recipes skip steps, assume familiarity with Mexican techniques, and vaguely mention techniques that many Americans will not know. I've been cooking this stuff for years, but a newbie Mexican chef would be up a creek with many of the recipes. This book has so much content that's not recipes that this matters less than it might in a book that was primarily a cookbook, but it's still disappointing.That said, the book is still worth every penny; it's a true delight, to be savored like a novel. It's just that it'd be worth every penny of $5-7 more too, if that'd buy paper stock worth a damn and a hard cover. I can overlook the recipes, but the construction lops off a star.Also: I want the Tacografia map as a poster-size print to frame on my kitchen wall.

I love love love this book but I gave it four stars because the pages are SUPER thin! Like phone book quality. Do not give to a teenager or sloppy adult... If you get one splash of sauce on your book while enjoying a recipe that's it! I didn't do this and luckily both people I gifted the book to are very clean cookers and love tacos! Fabulous book, just wish the pages were with more girth.

I have a copy, and bought this one as a gift for a family member. I lived in Mexico City for 30 years, and can attest to the authenticity of all the recommendations. Those who think "Taco Bell" is Mexican food need not apply.

One of the most "fun" books I have ever purchased! Well laid out, interesting history of the development of the taco, the interviews with taco stand owners give you a real flavor (ha!) of how tacos are made, tons of recipes, and great pix and drawings make this book very appealing! The great detail of the taco's ingredients was especially interesting. WARNING: don't read it if you are hungry, as it will drive you crazy:--))!

As the name suggests, it's the most comprehensive book on tacos I've ever seen. My favorite feature is the breakdown of every different style of taco and the 10 best restaurants to find each of them in Mexico. Those lists are a traveler's dream.

Just got it. Kind of messy design and printed on super cheap stock. But this sprawling hot mess of a book is, so far, a very enjoyable read. Wish they had used more Mexican Spanish terms for various items like equipment and ingredients. In spite of my criticisms, those involved (writer, editor, translator, etc.) have done a great job on what must have been a massive project.

I gave this as a gift and I think the recipient liked it, but I haven't really heard anything else about it.

I was hyped to order this and assumed it would be a comprehensive review of taco-like dishes throughout Mexico (hence the title "Tacopedia"). Instead this book is largely composed of frequently tedious or overly cute anecdotes which added little to my knowledge of this wonderful cuisine. In addition the ratio of actual recipes to the lengthy text is quite small and its very hard to read the recipes as they are printed in black type on dark pigmented pages. Lastly to have an entire book on tacos with literally one recipe on corn tortillas that requires ingredients and time that no typical home cook is likely to have at hand, is inexcusable. The tortilla is critical to a great taco and to have no realistic instructions on how to make this is inexplicable. This feels much more like a diary kept as the writers toured Mexico eating various types of cuisine and is primarily designed for hipsters intent on showing off their knowledge rather than people interested in actually cooking. Two stars only because scattered between the overly long text are a few useful nuggets and a small number of interesting and useful recipes.

Although Mark Adam's journey has more in common with Joshua Foer (Moonwalking with Einstein) who observes his subjects, (world champion memory enthusiasts) becomes immersed in their strange world, and finally becomes a participating contributor.Mark Adams has done a great service to his subjects. He has cataloged what must be the definitive collection of theories, evidence and debate around the various schools of thought on the veracity of Plato's tale. The revelations around Plato and his world are some of the most interesting parts of this book. His overview of the theories and philosophy of that time, are accessible and encourage further reading.The author is always courteous and respectful to his subjects, displaying a great deal of affection and empathy for the various researchers and hobbyists, who have made it a life work to confirm the site of Atlantis. He does keep away from the more 'fringe' theorists, UFOs,Edgar Cayse etc getting short shrift. This despite the central part Atlantis played in many an occultists world view. I've "known" that Atlantis was on Santorini for many years, though I didn't know much about the Atlantis legends in general; and I was curious to know the latest research and opinions. This book provides a personal analysis and stories of the various possibilities from never-existed through all the reasonable and unreasonable candidates and explanations. He describes the source material, the personalities of the various credible and not-so-credible players, the questions, the impossibilities, the various kinds of analysis of data that have been used.I really appreciate an author on a question such as this that don't have certainty or there own agenda, and present all the evidence with all the nuances. However, to be honest; I'm disappointed that it might well not be Santorini and also miss the loss of certainty... but a wonderful read nonetheless.

Adams has a flair for humor and so every line of his book is plenty of it, sometimes openly exposed, sometimes as a pirouette of the sentence. The book is also fascinating by the wide spectacle that offers about the issue in itself, curious and maybe almost mad characters, the history of the search for this fantastic place, curiosities of all kind, archaeology of every kind, the known show of conventional disdain so proper of the scholarly world, etc, etc.A delicious reading all in all.

Mark put a lot of effort and research into this book. I really enjoyed it and without spoiling the end, I cannot say much more about the content. **tease**Did I like it... yes? YES!

I've read all of his other books and loved them. This one just didn't hit the mark. It was tedious, kind of dragged on and honestly, was pretty boring. I quit reading it after about 60%. For a good read pick one of his other titles.

Interesting read if you have any interest in the subject matter. Part travelogue, part investigative report, it delves deep into a subject that has fascinated the curious for centuries. The author runs through various theories and places with a skeptical eye and an endearing sense of humor.

This book is hilarious. I've been reading it to my son since he was about four ... somehow we misplaced the book so we just decided to buy it again. He's nine now and we both still think this is super funny. I just read it to his third-grade class and the kids loved shouting out "MORE BEARS!" on every page. If you're looking to give a book as a Christmas or birthday gift, I highly recommend this!

OMG! I bought this for my 5 year old granddaughter after reading a review under a "boys" books. Got to say that girls will love it too. It's is a funny story and easy to read. She LOVES to say "MORE BEARS!" at the appropriate time. She told me that this was her favorite book EVER!!!! She has a large collection so that is quite an endorsement.

I love this book! It's funny for adults and kids without needing to resort to rude humor (the worst word is "underwear").

This was a favorite for a long time.

John Rich's remarkable book charts his journey as a doctor seeking to understand an epidemic of violence among young, urban African-American men. As he begins to interview some of the gunshot victims in the hospital where he works, Rich struggles to separate the complex, frightened, traumatized kids he gets to know from their stereotypes--in the media and even in the language of his fellow doctors and nurses--as unthinking monsters who are to blame for their own injuries. One of the great strengths of this book is Rich's compassion for and willingness to learn from the men he interviews. Never excusing violence, Rich uncovers the unfortunate logic in what is usually seen merely as "senseless." As compelling as the stories that he gathers, Rich's own narrative is inexorably entwined with theirs. As he movingly states, "it is only when we are transformed to embrace the humanity and defend the dignity of these young men...that we will engage them as full partners in our efforts to bring about healing, hope, and change." This is important reading for those in the helping/healing professions and all of us who hope to bring about that change Rich describes so eloquently.

Fantastic insight on how the inner city youth has a tough road ahead of them from an early age. Through Dr. Rich' encounters we see that perhaps the stereotypes of both mass media and music not only guide urban youth down the wrong roads but help others in securing permanent stereotypes of these kids turned criminals. In many cases, there is no other way for them, especially in cash-strapped cities that have almost no budget for outreach programs.

After reading a copy that I'd borrowed from my local library, I purchased a copy for my twenty year-old son. I only hope he reads and benefits from it!

Wrong Place, Wrong Time looks at the effects of inner-city violence through the lives of young African Americans in Boston and Philadelphia who have already been victims of shootings or other crimes. It examines the varying effects of trauma on their lives while looking at the cultures in which they live, and their chances for continued survival. Written by an African American physician.

Great book, reading it for a public health class.

This book helped me realize that the problem of violence is so much more complex than those in my middle class bubble understand.

As an educator, I highly recommend this book to teachers or anyone who works with urban youth. It can be used as a text to help students (middle school and up) critically examine issues of race, gender, violence, and inequality. And it can help youth workers develop a deeper understanding of the experiences and perspectives of many young men of color in urban communities, especially since the stories in the book are told largely by the young men themselves.

I found this book to be well done. In my work in the addictions field, I came to several conclusions described by Dr. Rich. I would like to utilize this text in a social work class that includes the analysis of environment on behavior.
