JOANNE FLUKE'S LAKE EDEN COOKBOOK by Joanne FlukeLove Joanne Fluke books and just thought this would be a recipe book but I was wrong. There is a story in thereabout the cookie swap they have. It's easy to keep track of everybody over the years and I love these series.Book also includes a hard copy of a recipe along with all the recipes from the Cookie Jar which Hannah runs in Lake Eden.Love how the recipes give you not only tips on how to make them but other most useful tips on brands, measurements and how to serve-hot or cold and anything else she feels might be needed. I can't wait to try some of the ones in this book.Love hand drawn pictures of different vegetables, dishes, etc. I wish this book was spiral bound so the print would be bigger and it'd fit on my recipe holder better. Can't wait to make the Angel Kiss Cookies. Love the tip about the size of baking pans!Loved hearing all the stories they shared while feasting at the cookie swap. The stories brought a smile to my face!Love end result of the charity.I received this book from The Kennsington Books in exchange for my honest review

Joanne Fluke's Lake Eden Cookbook is short on story but long on recipes. It has all the recipes from the first eight or nine Hannah Swenson books with a little bit of a story thrown in to make it interesting. I am working my way through most of her cookie recipes so it is nice to have them in one place. Even if you are not a murder/mystery buff like myself this little cookbook is delightful. And it is not just cookie recipes. There are several casserole dishes included but in Minnesota they are called Hot Dishes.

I purchased this book as a gift. Of course, I read it before gifting it. I was really surprised by this book. It was a fun read. There is actually a story interspersed throughout the recipes. I enjoyed it so much that I might actually purchase another copy for myself.

Wonderful cookbook that contains all of Hannah Swenson's famous Cookie Jar dessert recipes. Would definitely recommend this product to anyone who is a fan of the Hannah Swenson series, and who is gifted in the art of baking, or just loves her recipes (to make or just admire!).The only problem I have with this product is that I wish it was laid out in cookbook form; as in, if it was larger and perhaps would lay better. I have the Mass Market Paperback version which is very difficult to read and refer to when in the kitchen.

Contains all recipes from (I believe) the first 17 Hannah Swensen books. Also included are recipes that aren't in her books. I was able to highlight and make comments on the recipes (I have the Kindle version). Once I try a recipe, I highlight the recipe's name. Then if I want to remember a hint or remember a change I made, I just leave a comment by the recipe name.

I love this series and was so excited to see the recipes in a cookbook. It's only a few of the books recipes but they are all in there. Amazing and fun recipes. Every time I make anything from this everyone asks for my recipe. I hope they keep making more recipe books! Maybe for Christmas this year??

I enjoy J. Fluke's stories and recipes. The cook book content met my expectations based on the novels I read and bought. However this cookbook had been on back order and I don't know if they rushed a reprint or what but this is the worst book I have ever seen or held in my hands. The pages are stiff and tend to clump and the edge cuts are anything but uniform. They turn okay and I can use it as is, but I will not be giving this book as a gift

If you enjoy the Hannah Swensen series by Joanne Fluke or even the Murder, She Baked movies, and you enjoy baking and eating yummy cookies, then this cookbook is for you. I have only read one of her books, as I just discovered the series, and I am enjoying it. This cookbook is a great tie in with stories and tons of recipes, mostly cookies. I have made three recipes so far and they have each turned out delicious! There are no pictures in this book, only a few drawings, and I usually want photos in my cookbooks, but for this book it does not matter.

(even though I am about on par with Andrea in terms of cooking abilities--who knew that you had to take the innards out before cooking a chicken, or that there was even such a thing as a $100 cooking pan/dish/thingy you could so terribly scorch in the course of making Kraft Macaroni & Cheese that it would be ruined...)Seriously though, somehow I expected this to be the Lake Eden cookbook that was getting put together by Hannah for publication during the last few books. I expected, well a cookbook, including recipes that made enough sense that I might be able to do them (or convince my more kitchen-savvy husband to try). Reading the Hannah books always make my mouth water and I was looking forward to having the recipes in one place to wave under my husband's nose.Instead this is a series of recipes from the books (like I wanted) organized by type but located in between little snippets featuring the local residents (and yes, Andrea had yet another funny cooking attempt story). A bit of a Lake Eden bonus it turns out.Oh, and I read the Kindle version...and I was happy to see the footnotes were hyperlinked. In the regular books there would be asterisks and it was not intuitive for me to find the comments as all the asterisks were lumped together at the end (or was it the beginning) of the book in one section. Ultimately you could figure out the nut comment went with the recipe containing nuts, but it was not a simplified process. This book has numbered footnotes and they jump you right to the appropriate comment and, with a touch of the back button, you are where you left off. Much improved formatting! All I can say right now is mmmm....cooooookies...Highly Recommended!JTG

The Koch brothers, Charles and David, get a lot of attention from political observers and, increasingly, from the public. No wonder. The fortune they possess together is greater than those of Bill Gates, Carlos Slim, Warren Buffet, and other private individuals who are often characterized as the richest people in the world. But it’s not the brothers’ wealth that attracts the attention. It’s their heavy-handed attempt to dominate American politics. That’s the subject of Jane Mayer’s explosive new book, Dark Money: The Hidden History of the Billionaires Behind the Rise of the Radical Right. As Warren Buffet has said, “There’s class warfare all right. But it’s my class, the rich class, that’s making war, and we’re winning.” The brothers are at the very center of the war machine. The Koch brothers are not aloneThough the Koch brothers provide a convenient (and worthy) target, it’s important to understand that they alone are not responsible for the wrenching changes that have taken place in American politics over the past several decades, and particularly since 2009. As Mayer reveals, the brothers — Charles, especially — preside over a network of billionaires and centimillionaires who operate in tandem in support of the most virulent, Right-Wing causes and candidates in the country’s politics. A total of some 300 individuals constitute the network. As many as two hundred have attended recent annual gatherings hosted by the brothers. The brothers didn’t invent the tactics that have been used to upend the political order. Mayer credits the late Richard Mellon Scaife, the Pittsburgh-based scion of the Mellon Bank and Gulf Oil fortune. In 1964, Scaife set out to change the terms of political debate by investing heavily in think tanks and academic centers to espouse a radical “free-market” ideology and imprint it on a new generation of scholars, lawyers, and activists. Scaife’s various family foundations were soon followed by the Bradley, Olin, and Coors Foundations in advancing the Right-Wing agenda. In addition to Scaife and the Koch Brothers, the “vast Right-Wing conspiracy” they set in motion includes the aging casino magnate Sheldon Adelson, an obsessively pro-Israel donor who has outpaced everyone else in the country in political spending in recent elections, and the De Vos family of Michigan, owners of Amway, as well as other members of the 0.01%, a majority of whose fortunes were built on oil, gas, coal, and finance. Also prominent within this network are ultra-weathy individuals and families who have used similar tactics to bring about dramatic shifts in the politics of individual states — Wisconsin and North Carolina, for example. What do they want? The plutocrats in the Kochs’ network profess similar political beliefs which they characterize as “conservatism” to promote “freedom” and the “free market” in America. However, it’s highly misleading to refer to this ideology as conservative. Instead, it’s radical and reactionary, having nothing to do with conserving anything whatsoever of the past. On the contrary, it’s clear from Mayer’s account that the common intellectual thread that runs throughout this group of supremely privileged individuals is a determination to turn back the clock to the nineteenth century, repealing every political reform instituted under Teddy Roosevelt and all his successors. Child labor laws? Check. Anti-trust legislation? Check. The progressive income tax? Check. Social Security? Check. The minimum wage? You get the point. What these people want is clearly nothing less than the “freedom” to pollute, exploit their employees, avoid taxes, dictate the terms of political debate, and pass their vast wealth on to their children and grandchildren in dynastic fashion.Who are these people, really?Though they tend to style themselves as “self-made,” many of them — including the Kochs — inherited considerable fortunes. They live in multimillion-dollar homes (usually, several of them), preside over huge businesses, and donate millions of dollars to “charity” (usually, arts institutions and universities that will place their names on buildings). However, a disturbing number of them are, not to put too fine an edge on things, criminals. As Mayer puts it in her understated way, it is “striking how many members of the Koch network had serious past or ongoing legal problems.” For example, “between 1980 and 2005, under Charles Koch’s leadership, his company developed a stunning record of corporate malfeasance.” The Koch brothers’ and the De Vos family businesses have paid tens of millions of dollars in fines for violation of environmental laws, worker health and safety regulations, and tax laws, causing far more harm to society than even the worst violent offender. In a just society, many of these people would have gone to prison long ago.A multipronged strategyMayer describes the Kochs’ and their allies’ strategy as multipronged. At the outset, their efforts went largely into intellectual enterprises, chiefly think tanks and universities. The purpose of these “investments” was to nurture a new generation of “free-market conservatives” who would (and did) change the dynamics of public discourse. A second prong of the strategy was to press state and federal legislators and the courts to shift economic policy to their (self-interested) way of thinking. At the same time, they consciously set out to foster the grassroots efforts that eventually produced the Tea Party, by creating phony populist organizations (“Astroturf”), providing funding and political expertise, and subsidizing sympathetic media. For example, they paid Glenn Beck $1 million to hype the Tea Party on his show. To round out the picture, they mounted a lavishly funded effort to seize control of the Republican Party and gerrymander Congressional district lines in states across the country to guarantee a Republican majority in the House of Representatives. Have no doubt about the success of this strategy: witness the fear-mongering and Right-Wing platitudes consistently mouthed by the Republican candidates contending for the presidency in 2016.All this is possible now after the 2010 Citizens United decision and its sequels in the courts, which freed what Bernie Sanders calls “the billionaire class” to dominate federal elections to a greater extent than was feasible even under the Robber Barons in the closing years of the nineteenth century. Reportedly, a single session at a gathering hosted last year by the Koch Brothers generated pledges for this year’s election campaigns totaling $889 million, an amount far greater than either the Republican or Democratic parties raised for the last presidential campaign. In all likelihood, this sum will prove to be only a portion of the funds they contribute collectively when the final figures are toted up. After all, they can afford it: together, the men (and a few women) in this network are “worth” considerably more than $100 billion dollars.Where does all the money go?You might think it’s not easy to spend so much money, and you’d be right. To bring these massive funds to bear in the political area, the members of the Koch network have created literally hundreds of organizations — think tanks, academic institutes, SuperPACs, “public welfare” organizations, “charities,” and businesses to put their money to work. Some of these entities evidence no more signs of activity than a post office box. Others, such as the Heritage Foundation, the Cato Institute, the Federalist Society, and the Kochs’ most identifiable political venture, Americans for Prosperity (AFP), are well known and substantial. For example, AFP employed 550 people in the 2012 election cycle. Most of the organizations created by the members of the network exist merely to launder money from wealthy donors, funneling it through a series of obscurely named entities to avoid the few remaining campaign finance disclosure requirements. To operate this exceedingly complex array of organizations, both bogus and genuine, requires a huge number of political operatives, lobbyists, pollsters, and others. Though none of these people are likely to approach their benefactors in personal wealth, many of them are reaping millions of dollars for their efforts.Surprise! The most dramatic revelation in Mayer’s book is her account of the way the Koch brothers’ father built the fortune that was the foundation of their enormous wealth. Like his sons Charles and David after him, Fred Koch was an MIT-trained engineer. He developed advanced techniques to refine crude oil. Forced by the major players in the oil industry to operate outside the country, he built a thriving business overseas building oil refineries. Among the longest-standing and most lucrative business partnerships he undertook were with Stalin and Hitler’s governments. A scholar who studied Koch’s work for Nazi Germany concluded that “the American venture became ‘a key component of the Nazi war machine.’ Historians expert in German industrial history concur.”Some readers may also find surprises in Mayer’s accounts of the central role of the Koch Brothers and their allies in launching and funding the Tea Party and the protracted (and successful) effort to undermine the public consensus about the serious threat that climate change poses to human life in the near future. Mayer reports that “from 2005 to 2008, a single source, the Kochs, poured almost $25 million into dozens of different organizations fighting climate reform . . . Charles and David had outspent what was then the world’s largest public oil company, ExxonMobil, by a factor of three.”About the authorJane Mayer is an investigative journalist who has been a staff writer at The New Yorker for twenty years. She is a former war correspondent. She has won many of the top awards the journalistic profession has to offer. Dark Money is her fourth book.

This book will help you to understand what has happened in the last quarter of a century to our political system. You will understand better how a health care system that covered more Americans than any time in history and which lowered the rate of medical cost growth became vilified by the very people it served. You'll learn how even the valuable warnings of the human role in global warming were successfully challenged by greedy, scheming individuals with lies, and purchase of the toady so-called leaders of the Republican Party. This review is from a man who voted for Ronald Reagan, Gerald Ford, George HW Bush twice and Bob Dole. I'm ashamed of the gutless "modern" Republican Party.

This book is a hard read; not because of Lexile score interest, but because it raises a huge warning flag with regards to some of the funding that has been going into the recent elections. I got the Kindle edition of this book at 11 C.S.T. and stayed up all night reading it, it took about seven hours. I’ve made it a point for the last eight months to pick a book off of the new releases and just read it; it’s been my own personal challenge to read whatever, regardless of the topic or the political bent. This one was very fascinating and interesting with providing insight into how much money has been circulating in politics and for how long.I sense that this book will be a contentious one for many who read it, or even look at the title, but hear me out, I’m just a middle or the road person reading it for the sake of reading it. It’s certainly told with a liberal bias, but before it is declared unpalatable because of that, or all lies, there are some really worthwhile components to consider. The book is not anti-republican, rather it highlights the funding of anti-government movements and intentional divisions within the republican party as a result of libertarian ideas held by the Koch brothers. It moves past the republican party and focuses on the ultra-conservative anti-establishment ideas of a few of the 1% in creating a scenario that is wholly advantageous to them. It also highlights some who stood up against the Koch’s in regards to some ideologies, such as John Kaisch, who ceased to be invited to the larger mover and shaker events hosted by the Koch brothers.Throughout the book, every time a major economic player is introduced, Mayer underscores that introduction with a reference to a specific court battle or lawsuit due to fraud that that particular individual is facing. I understand that it is used to underscore why specific persons being referenced may have a disdain against the government, but in some situations, knowing the pending lawsuits for fraud are not advantageous to moving the story forward. This would be my one major criticism with the work. There is also some Koch family background that serves to paint a high level of dysfunction within the Koch family; as brothers apparently bickered even over their mother’s will that requested that they not sue one another, upon which they promptly sued. Yet, the family background does serve well to highlight where the wealth of the Koch brothers originated from and ideologies of anti-government that came from their father who was also a member of ultra conservative groups while alive. What the book does well is outline initial stamina in the 1970’s and continues to the present day of the sheer amount of money that has been funneled into elections as a result of the Koch brothers and a few other billionaires into elections. The money is so vast that it can invest in its own equipment and maintain itself as its own political machine. The money is often couched in donations to non-profits, which Mayer does an excellent job of outing their purpose and efficiency. It chronicles the efforts of some to whittle away at local and national elections through seemingly unrelated think-tanks and book publications that seek to radicalize the right as much as possible. The mention of “dark money” is money that is untracked or goes into a donors’ black hole, which later is utilized in whatever way the organization sees as useful.Having read some of the more recent political dialogue books lately, such as Glen Beck and Dick Cheney; I’d say that Mayer does a much stronger job of identifying the origin of some of the comments and narrative in the book. However, she does note that she is unable to credit all of her sources and there are a few citations that simply cross reference to political blogs.Overall, it’s an excellent read, albeit doing little to couch the authors bias and has a bit of a magazine sensationalist piece that is drawn out. It’s a book that makes me feel physically ill; which, if emotion is the goal of the writer, it’s been done. It is a vital, well cross-referenced read, that chronicles the long growing investment of big business into politics, which has reached the plateau of influence in the election game. Koch brother money, along with other billionaire investors, are certainly something all citizens should be aware of; and fearful of at the same time.

Not an easy read to understand or for the home grown geek to get into

Very bad grammar. Writer's first language is not english, little or no editing was done on book.

What was said here already. The content could be considered OK, but the author displayed a sloppy attitude when putting it together.

Seriously, you need an editor. Good info but hard to read.

I bought this book to research a segment on the Clean Air Act. Did you know America had it's own version of the deadly "London Fog" before London did? Or that car companies colluded to destroy street cars so more Americans would buy automobiles? Dr. Davis has devoted her life to the study of environmental health, and she's also a compelling author. A riveting and eye-opening read.

I purchased this book as a gift for friends who are passionate about the environment and health. I felt it would be a great boost to those that feel that no matter how hard they try, nothing seems to change. This book is a wonderful account of years and decades of fighting for what is right. The most wonderful part is that the end result of several of the battles against big business and money have been won! The book provides a documentary type summary of some of the worlds biggest battles against toxins and polutions and how tedious these battle were (example - leaded gasoline). It shows how fairness and truth are discarded, but seem to resurface again and again thanks to dedicated people who continue to fight for what is right. The courage and dedication of Devra Davis is amazing. This book is truly inspiring.

The book is a well-told story of how the U.S. clean air laws come about despite fierce opposition from many large corporations. It's also a very personal story of the deadly Donora, Pa.. air pollution episode in 1948 when the author as a small child living there, and who is now a leading air-pollution scientist. The book nicely weaves together the stories of those in Donora and elsewhere who suffered from air pollution and the scientists and others, including the author, who led the struggle--still far from over--to clear the air of deadly pollutants.

Living in pa all my life never heard of this until i seen it portrayed on tv. Need to dig deeper into history of my home state to see what else i never heard of . Read this book and learn why controlling air pollution is a must everywhere.

I never saw my grandfather, Rade Talovich. He died several years before I was born. After he emigrated from Serbia, he spent his life working steam shovels in the factories of Donora, Pennsylvania. He died suddenly in his fifties, a few months after the killer smog of 1948.I have never visited Donora. After he left, my father, Peter, never wanted to see the town again. We lived in LA, about as far from Donora as you can get in the continental USA.I remember the whole class crying as we sat on the football field during PE class at Pasadena High. We were sitting because the air was so bad we were not allowed to play; we were crying because the air hurt so much. We would try to see Mt Wilson, a few miles right behind our school. Usually we couldn't.(Every time this happened, there would always be a couple guys who passed the time chatting about what kind of cars they wanted. Inevitably big powerful ones.)My father never really told us what happened to our grandfather. Now, reading When Smoke Ran Like Water, I know more about it. Who needs Stephen King when you can get scared out of your mind by the solid facts about the air in your lungs?Dr Davis states her cases clearly and meticulously. It is a pleasure to read her beautifully sculptured sentences. I burst out laughing more than once at her nicely planted pronouncements. (Also, in this era of baldly explicit descriptions, it is nice to read her respectful ¡§G-d¡¨)The focus of the book is pollution, so there are a few avenues that could bear further exploration. She examines the important problem of breast cancer from the angle of pollutants. In Diet For A New America, John Robbins documented the role of eggs in causing breast cancer. Robbins also discusses the effect of hormones in meat animals on hapless children in Puerto Rico, a facet only lightly touched on by Davis. The guilt of polluting companies is beyond doubt, and almost beyond comprehension. However, I was also encouraged by Davis's resolute foundation in democracy. She places a portion of the ultimate responsibility right where it belongs: in each family, in each individual's decisions about what products to use or not to use. Without this reminder, this treatise could slip into polemic. Now we have to make sure that each person knows the facts with which to make wise decisions. Now that I have read this book, I am disturbed by an idea. My father, born the same year as Dr Davis' uncle Len (they must have known each other), died in his 60s, at about the same age as his mother, Mildred Kasonovich Talovich. Early generations of the family were roaring and raring well into their 90s. Could the toxic atmosphere of their town robbed my elders of decades of life?

Awesome book! I had to pick one off a list to read for class, and was dreading it. Lucky me I chose this one. The author really keeps it moving without boring the heck out of you.

This book is a compelling argument for reasonable regulations to protect us from industries who have failed consistently to self-regulate.

I have read both books by Dr. Davis. She is fascinating, informative, and very informative. I had the chance to hear her speak once, and it changed my views on so many things. She is very couragous in discussing the truth of what is happening to the earth, and to our bodies. A must read for everyone!

I bought the The Science of Good Cooking (Cook's Illustrated Cookbooks) 4 years ago, and to date it remains one of my favourite cookbooks. I find myself reviewing the techniques repeatedly.Cook’s Science is a new book from Cooks Illustrated. Instead of covering 50 techniques, e.g. “Gentle Heat Prevents Overcooking”, and “Salting Vegetables removes liquid”, this book covers 50 ingredients and their characteristics and best uses. They are:1. Short Loin2. Flank3. Pork Loin4. Pork Shoulder5. Pork Belly6. Chicken Breast7. Chicken Wings8. Lamb9. White Fish10. Salmon11. Shrimp12. Scallops13. Lobster14. Tofu15. Eggs16. Cream17. Butter18. Yogurt19. Goat Cheese20. Parmesan21. Green Beans22. Sweet Potatoes23. Cauliflower24. Mushrooms25. Kale26. Cabbage27. Tomatoes28. Garlic29. Onions30. Ginger31. Dried Chiles32. Apples33. Strawberries34. Oranges35. Coconut36. Pasta37. Whole-Wheat-Flour38. Brown Rice39. Cornmeal40. Oats41. Quinoa42. Cannellini Beans43. Lentils44. Olive Oil45. Stock46. Red Wine47. Honey48. Balsamic Vinegar49. Bittersweet Chocolate50. AlmondsAs always, the test lab uses a very scientific approach, bringing in machinery such as moisture and texture analyzers to see if the food objectively really is as chewy or moist afterwards as we think. I liked too that this book took more time to go into how base level ingredients - proteins, carbohydrates, water and their distribution might impact whether food tastes sour or mushy, crispy or soggy. In terms of the actual ingredients themselves - I’m learning a tonne! A real keeper was knowing that meat actually sears better and is tastier if you cook it straight from frozen rather than defrosted (of course fresh, never frozen trumps all!) Or knowing that foods like cauliflower have a sweet spot in cooking time to bring out the nutty flavour. Or confirmation that fresh ginger makes meat mushy. I like ginger’s tenderizing effect on say, Korean beef marinade, but I was unpleasantly surprised to find sous vide meat with a ginger marinade made the meat really mushy. Reason : ginger contains an enzyme called zingibain that breaks down collagen in the meat over time.Speaking of sous vide, I’m happy to see this book make more reference to this technique, as I’ve incorporated sous vide cooking into my daily routine much more frequently. As always, each chapter is broken down by first giving an overview of the ingredient, a test lab experiment (for example, how to best fry white fish and preventing it from sticking on a non-stick pan? Answer : use vegetable oil, not spray on a very hot pan), as well as a number of lab tested recipes for that ingredient. There was a good variety of recipes with a mix of classics and international, as well as a DIY section for making your own bacon, tofu, and jams.Overall, I think both books are well worth having, one to learn the best techniques, the other to learn the base characteristics of your cooking ingredients. I’m already sure I’ll be gifting this book to many of my foodie friends :)

Cooks Science was a disappointment because (1) the recipes are repeats of those published in The Complete America's Test Kitchen Cookbook and (2) because they repeat the same information verbatim in the "How the Science Works" section, the "Test Kitchen Experiment" and the preface to each recipe. They could have cut the text by 2/3 and had the same information. If you have any of their other books, save your money and avoid this one.

If you want to know what works best and why, this is for you. Even if you choose to ignore their recipes, the results of their tests are fascinating, practical, and helpful for avoiding mistakes. Most cookbooks concentrate on the "how", this one tells you the secrets of the "why". If you are only going to own two cookbooks, this should be one of them.

I have A LOT of cookbooks and chef textbooks. This is an attempt to explain some science behind cooking 50 ingredients, however very little of the information in this book is valuable when it comes to cooking. If you have any experience following recipes or watching the Food Network, you are already at a higher level than this book was written. Save your money. I enjoyed "The Professional Chef" by the Culinary Institute of America. It gives you real information of why's and how's as well as ingredient matching, designing your recipes, and techniques when cooking. It's a go to when a recipe calls for something I haven't had much experience with.

I've only made one recipe out of this book so far, the gingerbread, but it turned out fantastic. There are no pictures except for diagrams and charts explaining the properties of the specific ingredients, but that's probably because there just isn't any room! Each extremely detailed recipe is preceded by about 3-4 paragraphs in which they explain their process of reaching the perfect recipe. A great buy at any price.

This is beyond "I love it". I think this is the best book ever written about foods and their results of cooking. I have read this book from cover to cover and it is a great reference book and number one in my cooking library. This would make a wonderful gift to a beginning cook as well as a seasoned chef. WAY MORE than 5 stars. Its a 10 at least.

Fabulous!!! Just what you'd hope for in this comprehensive, engaging, smart, and enticing book. Purchased for my sweetheart and he just poured over it the minute he opened it. Beautifully bound and presented too. Recipies look fantastic and we can't wait to try!

I have to admit to ordering both books by the authors. The important facts ate covered in each book but different recipes . Everything I have tried has been successful. Yeah!!!

From the Publisher

The Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan has been isolated from the outside world for more than three centuries. Although the western part has been opened to limited tourism, the eastern part of Bhutan remains closed. Katie Hickman and photographer Tom Owen Edmunds are two of the few foreigners ever to enter these eastern lands. Starting from the capital Thimpu in the west, they traveled to the easternmost borders and the mountain–top retreat of the barbarous Bragpa people. Along the way, they met merchants, abbots, wandering priests, lamas, hermits, a reincarnation of the Buddha, and a sorceress. Filled with all the adventure and humor one might expect from such a journey, Dreams of the Peaceful Dragon beautifully captures the mystery of this remote kingdom.

One of the first accounts by a Westerner who visited (as of the mid-80s, although this is not specified) the then-less accessible eastern reaches, Katie Hickman's travelogue proceeds in expected fashion. That is, she's a competent travel writer and her integration of the remarks of earlier visitors helps give background for her own Raj-reminiscent trek. Oxford educated, from a diplomatic family, with an international upbringing, she does exude the air of privilege. She and her companion, photographer Tom Owen Edmunds (with 250 rolls of film), gain quickly via Calcutta connections the sponsorship of the Bhutanese royal clan that allows them all the time they need and lots of horses to make the arduous trip. The lateral east-west road, due to landslides and construction, is out between Jakar and Mongar. The pair and their guides must go by horse over a long stretch. However, this crucial part of the itinerary lacks excitement. Perhaps those more enamored of horses may find it more enticing, but for me, it did not keep my interest. Also, the tone Hickman adopts can grate. She twice puts down the annoyingly brusque Westerners on a group tour who cross their path. While their "unmistakable plumage" of garish windbreakers and their rude insistence on taking photos of monks where it is not allowed may merit critique, she seems oblivious to her own entitlement and the professional and social connections she and Tom enjoy, compared to the everyday tourist consigned to a package tour--besides, any tourist in Bhutan must go in the company of guides and and an approved itinerary--which only the royal intervention overruled and extended without limits in Katie and Tom's case.Late in this tale, all the same, two incidents enliven it. One horribly, as leeches infest the pair and one bite makes her bleed profusely from the back of her head as she attempts, in a memorably graphic scene, to sit at the foot of a beady-eyed lama in a dramatically situated temple. Trying, damp and twitchy with imagined or real leech bites to sleep near him that night, musicians and chanters blare. Tom says: "It's like sleeping inside a grand piano."A bit later, as they find the Bragpa (aka Brokpa) yak-herders of Mera and Sakteng, lots of inebriation and celebration reward them off-road. Like many travelers, the chronology and scenery seem to take the viewer out of now. "Mera had the easy earthy intimacy of a medieval tavern. But Sakteng was a Childe Harold's tower, a darkling place, deep and mysterious as legend." (186)Hickman to her credit differentiates between a traveller's reveries of anticipation, the possibility ahead of enchantment that drives one on, and the "grumblings of the camel men" (60) who must accompany and cater to the romantic and testy whims of those who hire the locals. You don't get much sense of the Bhutanese who wait on her and meet her, and this report relies much more on the perspective of an intelligent Englishwoman and her wry companion who seek to get under their own skin, to hear the heartbeat that isolation and endurance intensify. For longer reports from about the same relatively "pre-modern" (the road connected, but not yet electricity, TV, phones, or the internet) period in the eastern region, see Jamie Zeppa's "Beyond the Sky and the Earth" (reviewed by me May 2012) and Ken Haigh's "Under the Holy Lake" (reviewed Dec. 2012). Both teachers of English from Canada, Zeppa and Haigh nearly overlap in place and time with Hickman, but their stints allow them a deeper insight into this area. This counters the brief glimpses and the few photos Edmunds includes here that can't offer much depth or context.Hickman's (first published in 1988) book ends very suddenly. Almost as quickly as the pair and their retinue burst into the Bragpa's villages, they realize that they must return. At that moment, Hickman concludes.

Hickman writes beautifully. This book is a captivating account of her own journey into the depth of Bhutan, which she records honestly from the bottom of her heart. Hickman, unlike most western writers on Bhutan, captures something of the soul of Bhutan, as she narrates her own emotional journey as a young woman of good sense and rich sensitivity. At the same time, the book is also an exciting adventure story. Anyone with good wanderlust in their heart will not be able to put it down until all the pages are turned, and will be left yarning for more after the last page is read. While eastern Bhutan remains less exposed to outside visitors than the western part of the country, it is now much easier to travel there than during Hickman's time. There is now a motorable road to everywhere she went on foot and ponies. Television, telephone and internet highway -- prohibited or non-existent back then -- now bring in outside information more easily to Bhutan. Most importantly, Bhutan has achieved a phenomenal increase in the literacy of her people, with English as the chosen medium of class-room instruction and as the "link" language among the country's numerous linguistic groups. As such, beyond its literary value, this book also has a place in the historical literature, capturing the ways of the eastern people of Bhutan before their greater exposure to the outside world.Having said that, however, Bhutan's vision of "Gross National Happiness" (being more important than Gross National Product), and the enlightened development strategy associated with it -- balancing material and spiritual gains, and valuing its historical, cultural and natural heritage -- mean that Hickman or any other visitors would find the soul of Bhutanese people not much altered since her visit. The book would certainly tempt many to consider visiting this unique Himalayan nation called Bhutan. Like Hickman's own, it promises to be a journey of personal discovery, leaving one to ponder some cosmic reasons why such a nation exists on earth...

I was anxious to read about Bhutan before and after a visit there, but I found this book a disappointment. I don't know what I expected from someone's first attempt at writing such a book, and at a relatively young age- but I didn't feel that the author was able to move beyond her own needs and discomforts. The writing is self-conscious. By chance I came across the web journal "The Elegant Variation (TEV)." Here is their definition of TEV, and it fits the writing in this book perfectly! I've not read her other books, but I hope they have matured."The Elegant Variation is "Fowler's (1926, 1965) term for the inept writer's overstrained efforts at freshness or vividness of expression. Prose guilty of elegant variation calls attention to itself and doesn't permit its ideas to seem naturally clear. It typically seeks fancy new words for familiar things, and it scrambles for synonyms in order to avoid at all costs repeating a word, even though repetition might be the natural, normal thing to do: The audience had a certain bovine placidity, instead of The audience was as placid as cows. Elegant variation is often the rock, and a stereotype, a cliché, or a tired metaphor the hard place between which inexperienced or foolish writers come to grief. The familiar middle ground in treating these homely topics is almost always the safest. In untrained or unrestrained hands, a thesaurus can be dangerous."
