Review

"In this extraordinary book Jessica Benjamin reveals the paradoxical process of thirdness as the growth of intersubjectivity through mutual survival of enacted breakdowns. The choreography of ‘doer and done to’ makes way for a different kind of shared experience, creating and recreating the Third. This book must be read to grasp its singular importance, because it evokes the experience it clarifies: in trying to be good we fail; in accepting failure we go beyond it. Benjamin synthesizes our biggest insights about intersubjectivity and recognition with our most personal intimate experiences of being connected to another human being, moving psychoanalytic theory into what it has always hoped to be. Read this book, it is not to be missed!"―Philip M. Bromberg, author of The Shadow of the Tsunami: and the Growth of the Relational Mind "In her brilliant new book, Jessica Benjamin updates her early groundbreaking analysis of intersubjectivity, recognition, and mother-child development. As a result, Beyond Doer and Done To is one of the most powerful and robust accounts of the recognition process ever written. Discussing both individual and public trauma, Benjamin articulates a compelling distinction between the failed witness and the acknowledging witness, crucial to understanding our troubled times. This book is essential reading for anyone interested in recognition theory, trauma theory, and recent trends in psychoanalysis."-Kelly Oliver, author of Witnessing: Beyond Recognition, and most recently, Carceral Humanitarianism: Logics of Refugee Detention "Jessica Benjamin, one of the most original contemporary psychoanalytic thinkers brilliantly illustrates what is most alive in psychoanalysis today: what it means to think and work using the concept of intersubjectivity. I strongly recommend Beyond Doer and Done To not only to every psychoanalyst and psychotherapist but to all who are intrigued by the question of how a mind is born, and how it grows when it gets in touch with another mind."―Giuseppe Civitarese, author of Truth and the Unconscious in Psychoanalysis "Jessica Benjamin has pushed the boundaries of psychoanalysis beyond the intrapsychic realm into a much richer understanding of the analytic intersubjective interaction and its embeddedness in the broader social world. Benjamin’s unique articulation of the moral Third offers a compelling vision of how we might heal from the complicated legacies of the past, both individual and historical trauma, and meet the challenges of the 21st century."―Pumla Gobodo-Madikizela, Research Chair in Historical Trauma and Transformation, Stellenbosch University, and author of A Human Being Died That Night "Among the most influential and most widely read of psychoanalytic writers, Benjamin in her latest work perfects her brilliant, trail-blazing articulation of intersubjective recognition theory. In Beyond Doer and Done To she elucidates the relations of complementarity, acknowledgment, rhythmicity, the Third, mutual vulnerability, doer-done to relations, trauma, dissociation and witnessing. She has provided a theory of recognition and its vicissitudes, recognition between mothers and infants, therapeutic healing recognition, and recognition relations among couples, families, and even the warring peoples of the world. This magnificent interdisciplinary synthesis breaks through intellectual barriers and will inspire generations of psychotherapists, psychologists, philosophers, feminists, social theorists, and activists."―Lewis Aron, Ph.D., Director, New York University Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy & Psychoanalysis

Thoughtful.

THIS IS EXCEPTIONAL BOOK. I'M MIDWAY THROUGH AND EAGER TO CONTINUE THIS EXTENSION OF BENJAMIN'S WORK.

Jessica Benjamin’s work is among the few bodies of work in relational psychoanalytic theory in which an entire system is proposed. Her work revolves around a theme—recognition theory, intersubjectivity, and the Third--the very subject of this book—commodious enough to contain all of psychoanalysis. This is a theory that has implications for every theoretical, developmental, and clinical question. I am not exaggerating when I say that. I defy you to come up with an aspect of psychoanalysis that this theory does not touch on in one way or another. Comprehensiveness is one reason that Benjamin’s work has been so influential. But of course there are others. For one, the work is formidable. Benjamin’s thinking simply cannot be pooh-poohed on either intellectual or clinical grounds. Its critics can disagree with it, which is fine--but they can’t—and they know they can’t—dismiss it. They must engage with it. The work’s comprehensiveness and the respect it commands are accompanied by another quality that I think has mattered greatly: the work is immensely appealing. It privileges human connection--but unlike most other theories of that kind, it takes our failures in that respect just as seriously as our successes, and pays at least as much attention to them. In Benjamin’s theory of recognition, we recognize ourselves and our struggles—our best moments and our worst—as psychoanalysts, patients, parents, lovers and friends. In noting the qualities that make Benjamin’s work influential, we can’t overlook its commitment to an ethical and moral stance: the central significance for psychoanalysis of human freedom, and the unapologetic claim that psychoanalysis is a moral endeavor. I find this property, which has been deeply important to me in Benjamin’s work ever since her first, groundbreaking book, The Bonds of Love (1988), not only enlightening but deeply admirable. This is not your grandfather’s psychoanalysis--and I’m so glad it’s not. And finally, there is Benjamin’s insistence on clinical discipline. That is one of the themes I took away from Beyond Doer and Done To, and I appreciate it because I agree with it, but also because it is one of those qualities in Benjamin’s work that makes it impossible for those with more conservative psychoanalytic views to dismiss her. I quote from the end of Chapter 2: “Analytic work conducted according to the intersubjective view of two participating subjectivities requires a discipline based on orientation to the structural conditions of thirdness. It is my hope that this clinical and developmental perspective on co-created intersubjective thirdness can help orient us toward responsibility and more rigorous thinking, even as our practice of psychoanalysis becomes more emotionally authentic, more spontaneous and inventive, more compassionate and liberating to both our patients and ourselves” (p. 48). Doer and Done To is highly original, immensely erudite, morally and intellectually powerful, and profound. It is a mature statement, by which I mean is that Benjamin is finally free to take for granted the place of intersubjectivity in the psychoanalytic world. The movement her ideas has inspired has long since arrived. And so now, no longer needing to clear a space for herself and her thinking, she can turn her full attention to the elaboration of the developmental and clinical issues of intersubjectivity that have always been at the center of her interest. To these issues, Benjamin has added in this book a consideration of the social/political. I wish that everyone involved in situations of violence and collective trauma around the world, both those who commit the violence and those who suffer it, could not only read, but heed, Chapter 7, “Beyond ‘Only One Can Live’” This book’s primary concern is clinical psychoanalysis; but Benjamin’s intersubjectivity theory has always been a truly interdisciplinary project, and Benjamin expresses in these pages her hope that the social and philosophical implications of this book, and no doubt all of her work, will appeal to non-psychoanalysts, as well. I share that hope. It would be broadening for them, no doubt about that, but that’s not the only reason I’d like to see this book have that kind of cross-disciplinary impact; I also would like for all the non-psychoanalysts to understand, which very few of them do, what psychoanalysis today has to offer. And what better representative than Benjamin’s work? No matter whether you read in a year five books or fifty in psychoanalysis, gender studies, cultural studies, or social philosophy, this needs to be one of them. It’s that significant.

This is an elusive topic, but Benjamin's writing is lucid and allows one to move through complex ideas with relative ease. Her ideas take us beyond intersubjetivity, into the realm of an exquisitely nuanced dance between "doer" and "done to." As a psychotherapist with many decades of experience in long term treatments, I found the author articulating experiences I hadn't quite been able to describe even to myself. I've long been concerned with the issue of therapist apology and./ or acknowledgement of doing harm to the patient, mindful of the old training "rules" and mindful too of the human necessity of acknowledging responsibility when we inevitably harm each other. Benjamin's thoughts are welcome, partly because she comes down on the side that I favor and even more because she describes in great detail the ways in which such acknowledgment is psychically organizing and how it supports regulation, autonomy and integrity. She also writes clearly of the therapist's need not only to tolerate uncertainty, disregulation, blankness, helplessness and fear, but also to expose those states to the patient (with judgement and sensitivity) as a way of creating the conditions for deep change. This is not just a book about psychotherapy. It doesn't flinch from issues of morality, most notably the moral necessity of what Ellie Wiesel called "Witnessing." Benjamin has done a masterful job of showing us that regardless of training or school of thought, moral issues must be acknowledged and lived in the therapeutic encounter.

Essential reading. Spans the gamut between the psychological and the sociopolitical. Shows how the post-Freudian stance of equivalence and immersement (rejecting the authoritarianism of “the one who knows” ) links up with efforts at reconciliation in the many, many theaters of war and oppression.

Somebody gave me this book years ago as a gift, but I never finished reading it. Along the way this book got lost, so when I saw it selling on Amazon I decided to purchase it.This time I'm a little bit more clear-headed than I was when I first read it, but I still got the impression that Annie Besant was like somebody looking in from the outside. She could put it down on paper, but she really was not living what she preached. This is the difference, a saint or somebody that is spiritually evolved can tell you about their experiences, but she could only tell you about what she learned, her speculations and opinions.I found it hard to swallow her claims about Atlantis, something that has not been proven to this day. What really irked me was her constant comparison between civilized and uncivilized peoples with allegories to superiority and inferiority. I think even Jesus Christ would feel offended, but maybe that is the way people expressed themselves in the 19th century. With that said, I did find some passages that were very helpful in my spiritual quest, but again there was this emphasis on "spiritual secrets" that lie beyond the ordinary man and are/can only be kept by certain people evolved enough(Masters), or by secret societies which of course she belongs to. Where are these so-called masters when you need them, such as in WWI, WWII etc. I will continue reading this book however and maybe I can get something out of it, but in my opinion, there is a big difference between reading and doing. The real truth(secret) about Christianity is that Christianity unlike other religions, comes from without not from within and cannot be controlled as we can control the world's resources. .

I was somewhat wary of opening this little book by Anne Besant -- as I was quite aware of her fierce radical and Theosophical background -- which could interfere with a truly beneficial presentation of Esoteric Christianity. But I did open this slim work and read from it at various spots at once -- as Anne Besant continued to surprise me with both her deep insight AND sympathy for Esoteric Christianity -- as NOT opposed to Exoteric Christianity. Indeed she makes spot-on usage of World Religion, Western History and Exoteric Christianity -- with strong support of and to Exoteric Christianity. Her background even is seen to give her determination and special angles on this special topic -- even if such extra angles may be uncomfortable for narrow-minded or close-hearted folks. Her general approach has a fluid, clear and sharp rationale -- effectively seeing aspects as they are via certain critical angles. Such as her looking at The Christ from three views -- historical, mythical and mystical -- with a coherent chapter for each. Each and every chapter has such a coherent theme -- and they match very well what a seeker would want to know about Esoteric Christianity in harmony with Exoteric Christianity. A great example of this is chapter five "The Mythic Christ". From the start of this chapter, Anne Besant gives a surprisingly strong defense of Jesus -- versus attackers using Comparative Mythology against Religion. Indeed she uses such rationale to defend and extend the Legacy of Jesus. Her special point-of-view does stand out here with wide and deep connections to other Traditions and Ideas -- but focused on supporting the Legacy of Jesus. She supports Prayer, Trinity and other traditional Christian aspects likewise. These Thematic Chapters are done so well-and-good that I feel it wise to quote in full her Afterword to sum up "Esoteric Christianity" +++"We have reached the end of a small work on a great subject, and have only lifted a corner of the Veil that hides the Virgin of Eternal Truth from the careless eyes of men. The hem of her garment only has been seen, heavy with gold, richly light with pearls. Yet even this, as it waves slowly, breathes out celestial fragrances -- the sandal and rose-attar of fairer worlds than our own. What should be the unimaginable glory, if the Veil were lifted, and we saw the face of the divine Mother, and in Her arms the Child who is the very Truth? Before that Child the Seraphim ever veil their faces, who then of mortal birth may look on Him and live?Yet since man abides His very Self, who shall forbid him to pass within the Veil and to see with 'open face the glory of the Lord'? From the Cave to highest Heaven, such was the pathway of the Word made Flesh, and known as the Way of the Cross. Those who share the manhood also share the Divinity, and may tread where He has trodden. "What Thou art, That am I." "

Knowing what we know now how miss Besant would have seen Christianity ?the new forward written by by smoley starts out asking a good question . we here in the early 21 century are facign a new crisis with Christianity on the one hand more people are turning away form religion and taking up a very materialist point of view I.E. atheiston the other hand religion (and probably a reaction to this) is turning more violent more fundamentalist and more insane from militant islam to fundamentalist Christianityhow can this be happening ?And i think besant gives a good example of how it can be stopped and turned around . but you have to read it to find out .besant always drawing form buddhist christian hindu and rosicrucian neo platonic vedanta sources paints a fun ride i must say as always insightful and a delight .One interesting academic part of this book i liked was besants connecting labilicus to neo platonic thought i don't think any one has seen this very obvious connection its quite amazing how could people miss this?Although I like Besants writings this i felt is not her strongest, it's lacking, although its powerful and insightful like all her writings, this one feels it misses something. I Think if she would have had more information like texts found in the 40s some years after her death than this book could have been much better. Anyway by far my favorite besant book is Thought-Forms

This classic work by Annie Besant is a foundational work for Liberal Catholics, theosophists and others who look for esoteric components within a Catholic and Christian framework. Thought provoking and an interesting read.

An outstanding book on the subject of Esoteric Christianity by a very knowledgeable and qualified author. A must for any serious library.

Pretty good, perhaps not her best, but interesting and informative. One has to be open. Definitely not for the legalist, or arch fundamentalist

Interesting

Intellectually accomplished and well written apologetic on the presence of a creative intelligence in the universe. If you have an interest in physics you will find this a challenging and interesting read. The only consideration preventing a five-star rating is the the author does not, in my opinion, tie the various elements of his case together as well as he could have throughout the book; that is, the individual chapters are extremely well written, but the bridges between and among them could be presented more clearly.

The initial chapters in the book give a summary description of the history and nature of physics and cosmology. The book then becomes a sometimes complicated argument for the inadequacy of “physicalism“ to give answers to the “why“ questions of life. In some ways the book serves as an introduction to basic theology for the “recovering physicalist.” The book argues that ultimate truth can only be discovered by exploring a different category or paradigm of thought from that of methodological naturalism (physicalism). Science involves a system of thought that is required to understand the physical world. Observation and, if possible, experimentation will help to understand the universe and may even provide signposts to God, but by definition will only be able to take us so far. We will need to shift paradigms from the physical category to the metaphysical one in order to pursue the answers to the ultimate “why” questions. The author’s “signposts” point to the metaphysical category of thought. These don’t “prove God”, but show that scientific knowledge from physics and astronomy is “God-friendly.” Thus he concludes that physicalism cannot explain everything, especially (as chapter 11 discusses) consciousness and morality.

Peter Bussey is a particle physicist with a Ph.D. from Cambridge. In Signposts to God, Bussey argues that modern physics is either compatible with Christian theism or points to a creator. This review will go through each chapter, commenting on select points. It will not be a comprehensive review, but it will hopefully provide readers with a taste of what the book is like, and what I consider to be its strengths and weaknesses. I should add the disclaimer that I am not a scientist.Chapter 1 is the introduction. Here, Bussey criticizes physicalism. Physicalism appears to be similar to materialism, a view that excludes the spiritual by saying that matter is all that there is. According to Bussey, humans have a sense that life includes more than the material, or physical.Chapter 2, “The World of Physics: A Quick Tour,” talks about basic aspects of physics: force, gravitation, electricity and magnetism, light, heat, and atoms. This chapter also has a section on the “God particle,” or the Higgs particle. The prose is not particularly complex, but a lot of information does come at readers at once, which may challenge people (like me) who have difficulty absorbing scientific concepts.Chapter 3, “Revolutions in Physics,” covers relativity, the big bang, light as particles, and quantum physics. This chapter briefly mentions theological problems that C.S. Lewis and Albert Einstein had with the randomness of quantum physics, but, overall, this chapter is rather thin in theological reflection, in comparison with the other chapters of the book. Bussey does say that quantum physics may pose a challenge to physicalism, or at least rigid forms of physicalism that portray humans as “just physical machines” (page 37). Bussey also refers to views that there is actually an order underneath the randomness. Bussey does not necessarily endorse such views, but, throughout the book, he does appear to be more comfortable with order than with randomness. For Bussey, order (i.e., laws) point to God.In Chapter 4, “Laws of Nature and of Physics,” Bussey argues that there are physical laws, and he believes that these point to a lawgiver, God. Bussey presents various arguments against those who deny the existence of physical laws; his most convincing argument is that scientists have made predictions on the basis of laws, and the predictions have come to pass. This chapter was lucid in its discussion of nominalism (i.e., there are only particulars) and universalism; it was informative, albeit not as lucid, in summarizing Aristotelian and medieval views on form, and the contrast between those views and modern science. In Chapter 5, “Dangerous Infinities,” Bussey talks about the theological implications of the view that the universe is either infinite in space, or finite. Some, such as Newton, held that the universe was infinite and that this reflected God’s infinity. There was a fear among some theologians, however, that regarding the universe as infinite could make it too much like God, and they wanted to preserve God’s distinctness. This chapter did not knock me out of my seat, but it was interesting to read what prominent thinkers have believed about the infinity of the universe and the theological implications thereof. In Chapter 6, “Modern Astronomy: Where Has God Gone?”, Bussey addresses the theological implications of the vastness of the universe. When the world was believed to be the center of the universe, God was deemed to be near, paying close attention to what occurred on earth. Can we believe this now that we know that the earth is not the center but is rather a tiny speck in a vast universe? Bussey responds as one would expect, saying that God’s eye is on the sparrow, so God is paying attention to us, small as we are. In terms of science, he talks about how the vast universe is necessary for life to exist on this planet. What was especially interesting in this chapter, though, was when Bussey argued that, even in medieval times, there was some sense that the universe was large: not as large as we today understand it to be, but still large.Chapter 7, “The Human-Friendly Universe,” is about the origin of the universe and earth. Bussey is essentially presenting the argument from design: that things had to turn out a certain way for life to exist, and that this points to a designer. On page 100, Bussey made an intriguing statement: “Somehow, some extremely large numerical quantities, given by the fields individually, are apparently canceling each other out almost exactly, but there is no known reason why they should.” I was somewhat lost in terms of the science that Bussey was discussing, but I could tell that Bussey was referring to something here that he considered to be enigmatic. In his narration of the development of the universe, things were taking place naturally: one event followed the other, and we could see why one event followed the other (even though things could have occurred otherwise, and, fortunately for us, they did not). Here, by contrast, something occurs that turns out well for life, but it is unclear why exactly it occurred. Bussey may be open to seeing that as pointing to God.Overall, reading this chapter had a rather different effect than what Bussey may have intended. As Bussey described the natural development of the universe, that seemed to me to contrast with the picture that we get in Genesis 1, in which God simply spoke, and things came to be (fiat). Perhaps God could have used natural processes, but I can understand how some can arrive at the conclusion that a natural explanation makes God unnecessary. In Chapter 8, “Implications of a Universe ‘Fine-Tuned’ for Us,” Bussey responds to detractors of the argument from design. He addresses such topics as the concept of multiverse and the alleged “Theory of Everything.” In one case, Bussey lucidly, and I would say accurately, laid out an argument against design, but his response to it was rather weak. The argument is: “Advanced life is indeed a complex phenomenon, but it is of no real significance. It is merely one physical possibility among many. The cosmic tea leaves just chanced to fall this way.” In other words, just because advanced life is important to us, that does not mean that there had to be a God who intended for it to exist; things just turned out as they did, and we got lucky. Bussey’s response was that consciousness is significant. Not only is he basing his argument on a subjective judgment, but his argument does not answer this objection against design. To his credit, Bussey in this chapter offers criticisms of the Intelligent Design movement. Bussey notes that biologists have found natural, scientific explanations to the puzzles that have been attributed to design. For unclear reasons, Bussey does not believe that the same situation applies to physics.Chapter 9, “God As First Cause: An Argument That Seems to Hold,” is about the cosmological argument: the idea that someone caused the universe to exist. Bussey argues against the idea that the universe has existed forever, and, overall, his arguments were effective. In refuting the idea that the universe has been in a continuous, unending cycle of expanding and contracting, for example, Bussey states that, were this true, there would be a lot more background radiation in the universe, enough to preclude stars from developing. In my opinion, this chapter was the best in the book, in terms of clarity and meeting objections head on.What stands out to me in Chapter 10, “Explanations and Evidence,” is Bussey’s paragraph on page 159 about why belief in God is reasonable: order, human intelligence may point to a higher intelligence, etc. I did not care that much for his statement on page 158: “But rather than saying, ‘God cannot exist because I would have done it better!’ it may be wise to acknowledge our limited understanding.” Our understanding is limited, and, as Bussey most likely knows, that is something that various sides in the debate over the existence of God can cite: atheists can say that there is a natural explanation for the things that theists attribute to God, even if that explanation is unknown, so we should not jump to the “God did it” explanation just because our understanding is limited. My problem with Bussey’s statement on page 158 is that I think that an appeal to “flawed design” should be considered relevant in debates about the existence of God. Many apologists like to appeal to design and order to justify their belief in God, so what is wrong with skeptics asking about apparent flaws in the design structure, or disorder?Chapter 11, “Mental Reality,” is about the soul and human consciousness. Bussey contends against the idea that the human mind is merely the product of the physical brain, as he maintains that humans have a soul, and that God (not nature) is responsible for the human mind. This chapter provided the interesting detail the Descartes may not have been as dualistic in his conception of the soul and the body as many might think. There were also judicious aspects to Bussey’s discussion, as when Bussey stated that we cannot make flawless judgments about the thinking-ability of animals, since we are not them. Bussey’s arguments against materialism (or epiphenomenalism) were rather elliptical, however. Plus, there is a lingering question in my mind: What exactly does the human brain do, according to people who believe that humans have a soul? Does the brain do anything or serve any purpose, if the soul is what gives us our thinking ability? If humans have a soul, is their brain superfluous? In Chapter 12, “Mystery and Ignorance,” Bussey talks about having a sense of wonder at the universe. He criticizes the romantic notion that greater knowledge and understanding detracts from wonder. Bussey is probably implying that the sense of wonder that even non-believing scientists experience is a signpost to God.Chapter 13, “Beyond Physicalism,” criticizes the idea that science can know or understand everything. Bussey also spends time critiquing Carl Sagan’s view that religion encouraged superstition, until science showed the truth, and that we should stick with what is “rational” rather than pursuing religion. This book was over my head, in areas, but it was also informative. There were times when Bussey seemed to be jumping to conclusions, but there were also times when his discussions were judicious.I apologize for any misunderstandings on my part in reading and reviewing this book.I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher. My review is honest!

Great book.

Kicking in my interests in philosophy and theology again even though I am not a physicist. Thank you for the rejuvenation of philosophy. Apparently, some scientific thought is on the right path.

Very good

great read!

Bussey makes it clear that rapprochement between science and theism is plausible without denuding either worldview. Bussey goes further and clearly explains how a current cosmological, teleological and consciousness arguments abductively link to various scientific discoveries to form a mutually reinforcing coherency which belies a bald rationalism and undermines physicalism.

I was looking forward to this book all week since I wanted to read it the first day it was released. Unfortunately, the book is incredibly hard to read. It's as if she's writing for a blog and no one had edited the writing (describing occurrences that go on for 3 pages when it could easily be described in 3 sentences). There are so many repeat mentions of the same stories (references to one particular pair of sweat pants is one example among many). I deeply regret making this purchase and probably will not buy anything recommended by the fashion press or anything as publicized as this book.If you're a follower of blogs/fashion, it is likely you would not like this book. For people who do not follow blogs or fashion, it may be an interesting read, although hard to actually get through.

As someone who's spent a chunk of her career on the fringe of the NYC fashion/journalism scene, I really wanted to like--possibly be inspired by--this book, but ultimately these "essays" were disappointing. Odell repeats herself over and over, which makes me think she only has a handful of stories from her past she feels are worth relaying (and--oh, gee--they happen to be the ones full of name drops). The whole chapter about the VS show felt like a random stab at "real" journalism, but she blatantly admits there wasn't a story there worth reporting in the first place. Why on earth, then, did it wind up in the book?!

I've been following Amy's writing online since she started out at the Cut, and have always loved her hilarious & witty writing style. This book is a really fun look into the fashion industry from someone who's followed it closely for years but never really succumbed to the craze of it all. My background is in tech, so fashion is a bit of a mystery to me, although I can appreciate it. If nothing else, books like this are a reminder that every industry is a bit wild and crazy when you're on the inside. I definitely enjoyed reading it!

She tries too hard in her writing, which felt unnatural and far-fetched.No need to explain all and everything in excruciating detail! Being succinct would have been more appreciated by the readers. This book didn't inspire me, on the contrary very exhausting tuning into it...

She is too cautious .... The book is so boring..... Every time you think she's going to tell us something we don't know, a new chapter comes along , drawing out a scene few ever see or care about .👎

I'm going to school to work in the communications side of fashion, and like the author, sometimes find myself laughing at my peers. This is such a great and hilarious book that takes the 'snooty' out of fashion. It follows her career from begginings, reporting at parties and being awkward at it, to being an editor, and all the in betweens; great light read.

I was hoping this would be a good read for my fashion students, but I couldn't finish it. It wasn't interesting enough.

Tales From the Back Row takes you behind the scenes of the New York fashion world and the celebrity party circuit--rarified places few of us get to enter. Odell describes her experiences as a young reporter and blogger working her way up from the bottom rung of the journalism ladder. She sees through the fashion world's fancy facades to reveal how ridiculous much of what goes on there really is. While the book is funny, entertaining and a very enjoyable read, I also found it heartfelt and honest. I think it will appeal to most everyone looking for a fun read. Millennials and people interested in fashion and the media will find it indispensable.

A truly wonderful story! The characters are incredibly well developed and the chemistry between Sana and Jamie is electric. The use of poetry throughout the story as a plot device and to set the mood for scenes is especially impressive. One of the things I found most effective in the story is one of the aspects many reviewers seem to dislike the most: the cheating storyline. Like it or not, things like that happen in life. It isn't often that you find a YA story that handles that type of storyline, either with the main characters OR with the main character's parents, well. I felt that this novel handled both of them well, with one impacting the other, and portrayed Sena's actions accurately. She made errors in judgement; she allowed peer pressure to influence the level of trust she put in Jamie; and her upbringing and tendency to avoid conflict, at least that is how I perceived it, prevented her from keeping the situation from spiraling out of control once she realized how massive her mistake had been. (Not that Jamie was blameless either... her actions contributed to the situation as well.)I was particularly impressed with the depiction of Sena's parents relationship. It gave the story a cross-cultural aspect that many readers might have trouble identifying with. The decisions made by Sena's mother are not the decisions most American or European women would make if faced with the same situation, though, frankly, her behavior isn't that different from the way things were for women in aristocratic and upper class families world wide for the majority of the past few centuries. Putting the needs of family first isn't that odd. It is just more firmly ingrained in some cultures than others.

Proceed with caution as I can’t discuss what I didn’t like about this book without diving into major spoilers. So you’ve been warned.Ok the first half of the book is great. Sana our main character moves from Wisconsin to California after her dad gets a new job. Starting out, I absolutely loved her friends and while quick, I even like the chemistry between Jamie and Sana. They were really the only ones the other could truly be themselves around. Caleb at times got on my nerves, as he’s clearly just here to have a crush on Sana. While she clearly doesn’t see him as more than a friend, they could have a great friendship. All of these feelings completely changed for me getting into the second half.Once more, I’m diving into major spoilers of the book.********************************Final warning.***********I couldn’t stand Sana the second half of the book! Starting with Jamie seeing her ex girlfriend Kelsey and Sana’s friends catching them kissing. Jamie didn’t handle this well, even though she has no feelings for Kelsey anymore. I agree, but it’s nothing compared to Sana. Her friends suck! When believed Jamie has cheated on Sana, her friends tell her to date Caleb because Jamie cheated, so Sana therefore isn’t cheating. First of all, Sana made it clear multiple times she doesn’t see Caleb that way yet her friends won’t shut up about it! Second, yes it’s still cheating!!!! This book has the nerve to justify cheating and saying that if you cheat, it’s ok as long as you’re other half cheated too. Sana acting like it was ok because she thought, THOUGHT Jamie was gonna dump her for Kelsey. Sana knows Caleb likes her, so she could have easily told him she just didn’t see him as more than a friend without outing herself. Sure he would have been disappointed, but he would have gotten over it. This also makes Sana a hypocrite, after learning of her fathers affair. She was super upset about this, yet instead of telling Caleb she wasn’t interested, SHE kisses him! And proceeds to cheat on Jamie!!! Jamie at least told Sana the truth and the only reason Jamie couldn’t tell her about Kelsey first was because Sana deliberately avoided her! And the only reason Sana gets busted cheating isn’t because she finally steps up to what she has done. No she gets busted when Caleb kisses her in front of Jamie!!! Both of them rightfully tell her off, which is what kept me reading! To finally bust this character for how selfish and stupid she’s being!!! I felt no sympathy when all she did was cry about it saying what has she done?! She knew what she was doing and brought this all on herself!!! Yet after everything she’s done, Caleb and Jamie pretty much instantly forgive her! Jamie even takes her back!!! Ok author what a horrible message you are delivering. That “it’s ok to cheat if you think your other half is”. And “if your other half chests and lies, you’ll take them back instantly if they just give you pages of poetry”.What is wrong with this author?!?! It reminds me of another book 99 Days which I do NOT recommend either!!! The main character is just as dumb and selfish is Sana.I’m sparing anyone I can, do NOT read this book!!!

This may be the perfect YA novel for our time. It’s set in a modern-day American school, with authentic-sounding teenager voices and texts and emojis, features a mostly-minority cast of characters in a majority-minority high school, and shows a main character making the kinds of mistakes kids sometimes make. Plus – the main character is struggling with the realization she is lesbian. Plus – lovely, well-chosen poetry that fits the plot.Sana is vivid and realistic and appealing, and I cheered her on, even as her life got complicated. The tension kept me hooked throughout. Fascinating twist to her family life at the end. What a great theme – open secrets that “everyone” knows about but it’s hard to talk about.Brava! Excellent book. I can see why it won so many awards!

I really enjoyed Sana's journey in this thoughtful, challenging story of secrets, first love, and the difficult moments that shape our lives. The author wasn't afraid to dig into the hard issues teens (and adults!) face and show them in all their messy complexity. I especially enjoyed Sana's unfolding relationship with her mother and all the strong girl friendships portrayed in this book. And poetry lovers will gleefully excavate all the literary treasures along with Sana and Jamie. Lots to love about this book!

Loved this one. Sugiura gracefully tackled so many difficult and sometimes sensitive topics, while also creating fully-fleshed, relatable characters. Sana's voice is spot on. I can't wait to have this gorgeous book on my shelf to share with my students.

Everyone in this book is a cheater and everyone is okay with it. I don’t believe the good reviews on this book are real. This is literally a book about everyone in the main characters life cheating in relationships and her cheating in turn. I hope this helps some people make their decision on whether or not to buy this. There’s no way those good reviews are real.
