Amazon has the bad habit of lumping reviews of multiple editions of a book without regard as to author/editor or publisher, to the detriment of the buyer's choosing an edition, so I write to make a few comments on the 984,562 editions of "Paradise Lost" listed for purchase. I have used the titles as listed by Amazon to help find the editions I refer to, and, with the exception of the books by Kastan, Lanzara, and BookCaps, the ones I discuss below are ones I own and am familiar with. The version with an introduction and comments by Pullman has text that is large and readable, line numbers and some nice illustrations, taken from the first illustrated edition, published in 1688. It is a nice copy for those who want just the text of the poem. The text is based on Stephen Orgel's 2008 Paradise Lost (Oxford World's Classics) which has been modernized presumably with respect to capitalization, spelling and punctuation. The comments by Pullman are worthwhile, but, while he may be a very good writer, he is not a scholar of Milton. Unlike Orgel, there are no annotations or notes to explain Milton's often arcane language and allusions. For readers seeking annotated versions, I suggest the following. The ultimate edition of Milton Alastair Fowler's Milton: Paradise Lost: it has been called the Bible of Milton scholars; one review I saw called it suitable for graduate students majoring in Milton. It is one of the few available based on the first edition of "Paradise Lost", published in 1667, but Fowler states that it also includes the additions made in the second edition of 1674 --- the version that most of today's editors use. Know that Fowler has produced a very, very scholarly version with many, many notes, sometimes to the point that they leave only two or three lines of the poem on the page, so I strongly urge using the "Look Inside" feature before deciding to buy it. I recommend Fowler's 1998 Milton: Paradise Lost (2nd Edition) edition in used paperback ---- reissue in 2006 edition with a new cover and much higher price. The blurb from the publisher on the Pullman webpage misleads the reader by mentioning "This is the first fully-annotated, old-spelling edition ..." It ain't (as the small print says). I can't find the actual book this blurb refers to, there are several that might be the one mentioned. One such version, with very favorable recommendations, is Barbara K. Lewalski's 2007 Paradise Lost that reproduces the original language, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and italics of the 1674 text. Its annotations are on the same page. Again, I would again urge potential buyers to "Look Inside."(Incidentally, I was able to find a .pdf copy of it online).Another annotated edition, again with those on the same page, that sticks close to the original 1674 text (but with some minor modernization) is Merritt Y. Hughes' Paradise Lost (Hackett Classics), first published in 1935, and revised in 1962. It is advertised as one popular with college professors for their classes, whatever that may mean. From what I gather, Fowler has replaced Hughes as the scholarly version to use.The edition by Hughes was taken in 2003 by David Scott Kastan (Paradise Lost (Hackett Classics)) and edited more extensively, again with the annotations on the same page. Incidentally, Kastan's comments on how he edited, along with comments on any editor's choices when dealing with Milton, are well worth reading, and can be found under "Textual Introduction" using the "Look Inside" feature. I urge reading them to understand how and why there are so many different editions of Milton.Yet another annotated edition that comes close to the original is by John Leonard's Paradise Lost (Penguin Classics). The ad for this version states that the text has been modernized to the degree of reducing some capitals and italics, and correcting the spelling and some punctuation. It is annotated, but not to the degree of Fowler --- but the notes are at the back of the book rather than the bottom of the page as seems customary and which I personally find difficult to use because of constantly having to flip between pages. Again, I would urge potential buyers to "Look Inside."There are many other scholarly editions available in addition to the ones I have mentioned here, including one online at the John Milton Reading Room at Dartmouth College. For those who might like a less challenging version of "Paradise Lost", I suggest BookCaps "translation" (Amazon's words, not mine) Paradise Lost In Plain and Simple English or at an even less difficult level, Joseph Lanzara's John Milton's Paradise Lost In Plain English: A Simple, Line By Line Paraphrase Of The Complicated Masterpiece. Should those prove too difficult, there might be somewhere a copy by Classics Illustrated comics, although a search by Google turns up nothing --- perhaps they never published one.Since each edition of "Paradise Lost" has its strengths and weaknesses, how does the buyer go about selecting an edition for purchase? To me, it's rather like buying a car --- ultimately based upon personal preference, but in this case, rather than engine and body style, determined by the way the editor has modified Milton's language and added annotations, and their degree of adherence to his original language --- some editors produce as little modernization as possible to retain Milton's original meter and rhythm for reading aloud, while others try for a more modern sound. I would suggest using the "Look Inside" feature, to see what the editor has done, to help making a decision.Whichever edition you buy, may you find great enjoyment in reading what I consider the greatest epic poem in the English language --- although you might agree more with what Donald Sutherland's character, Jennings, had to say about it in the movie "Animal House": "Now what can we say about Milton's "Paradise Lost"? It's a very long poem. It was written a long time ago, and I'm sure a lot of you have difficulty understanding exactly what Milton was trying to say. ..... Don't write this down, but I find Milton probably as boring as you find Milton. Mrs. Milton found him boring too. He's a little bit long-winded, he doesn't translate very well into our generation, and his jokes are terrible."

I have three editions of Paradise Lost—Alastair Fowler's, Scott Elledge's and David Kastan's—, and this is definitely the most suited for my object and needs. David Kastan undertook a throughout update and revision of Merritt Y. Hughes' praised notes to Paradise Lost, and, although I haven't yet read Hughes' original work, I'm inclined to think that Kastan lives up to his illustrious predecessor. This edition includes a fine introduction to the poem, a glossary of uncanny words found in it, copious notes on historical, mythological and biblical allusions, and commentaries on Milton's style and poetics (they are neither as extensive nor as "scholarly" as Mr. Fowler's notes, but I find them more straightforward and elucidative to the average reader). Truly a work worthy of Milton's epic.

Milton is a genius, but the introduction and commentary on the poem are atrocious. It reminds me of Chesterton's comment about John and Revelation: "Though St. John the Evangelist saw many strange monsters in his vision, he saw no creature so wild as one of his own commentators."A far more helpful guide to Paradise Lost is Leland Ryken's volume in his series Christian Guides to the Classics. The detail is not as granular, but it's a far more reliable commentary on the poem itself.

I am a huge fan of Paradise Lost itself, but I want to confine this review to the Kindle edition of the Dover Thrift Editions. The Kindle edition has the text of the poem with straightforward formatting. Line breaks were consistent with what you would expect from print edition. There are no line numbers, but I have yet to see a kindle book with line number in poetry. My biggest complaint is that the footnotes, of which there are many, are not linked into the text, making them practically useless in the Kindle edition. It is difficult to switch back and forth between two locations without links, especially when you are not sure what part of the text will have a footnote. So, 5 stars for Paradise Lost, but just 3 stars for the Kindle edition. I would try and find one with linked footnotes.

The best way to read one of the foundational classics of the Western world is to take a class at a university from a professor who specializes in Milton and baroque English authors. The second best way is to buy an edition like this one and read everything between the covers. Paradise Lost plumbs deeply the Greeks, Romans, the Bible and other religious and secular literature. In addition, it is a commentary on the English monarchy and the storm that overtook it with the execution of Charles I in 1649. Milton played a role in that drama, and it is embedded in Paradise Lost. By the time he started writing, a restoration was afoot, and Milton had to be careful not to indict himself for his enemies, who were looking for an excuse to arrest him. In other words, to simply read only the surface story is to miss almost everything, though the story itself is wonderfully told.I read the Kindle edition. That made it easy to pop from text to notes as they came up, deepening my understanding, but a paper book with a couple of bookmarks would be almost as easy. Paradise Lost is the work of a believer, and if you are a believer not afraid to read outside the Bible, your efforts will be rewarded. If you are a lover of literature, as I am, this is the mother lode!Paradise Lost is written in verse. This version modifies the English for modern readers. Even so, it will be a project. Set goals, stick with it, and you will be rewarded. I came to look forward to my nightly reading. My goal was 100 lines a night. Usually, though, I went over. If you've ever wanted to read one of the big ones, read Paradise Lost. It's not a classic just because bookish scholars like it!

This came up about a month ago and that cover was enticing. Yuri Is My Job! gets off to a good start and it played with my expectations in a pleasant way. We start with Hime, a high school student. Unlike the typical sweet but confused yuri protagonist, she's not always a nice person. Her chief school ambition is to be cute and popular and long term, she wants to be a rich man's trophy wife (I imagine Hime would make a women's studies professor want to jump out of a window). A set of circumstances leaves her obliged to work at a theme cafe where the waitresses pose as private school students. Hime soon finds herself on the wrong foot with Mitsuki, a senior student/waitress, but the manager thinks it would help the cafe if they became schwesters, an upper and lower class pair bonded like sisters. It's not fun for Hime as Mitsuki is a regular drill sergeant. Hime's friend Kanoko is also pressed into service at the cafe. There is Sumika , another upper class waitress and Mai, the manager. One can feel sorry for Hime, as she is in a job where she really doesn't understand things but can also dislike her relentless, calculated cuteness. Mitsuki seems to be someone who will have quite a backstory, and Kanoko is a likeable character. Yuri Is My Job! lived up to the hopes I had for it and it will be interesting to see how the series develops. Yuri fans might have a new series well worth following.

I've read many yuri mangas, but Yuri is my job seems to have the best plot so far! I love the characters and their different facades that they put on. It makes the story very interesting and funny. I really enjoyed it! I can't wait to see what Hime-chan gets into next!

I got this for my fourth grade son and his friends, to encourage his recorder playing. I think he's pretty excited about it, so I am hopeful that it will work out for him. There are features of the book that I think are very helpful for early beginners who are learning musical notation at the same time as the instrument (like my son). The notes are in large print, with the name of the note written inside the head of each note. Very helpful! Also, there are no key signatures, and each note is written with its sharp or flat, as required. This is sort of helpful. Most of the pieces are cluttered with sharps and/or flats, which is kind of intimidating, even though in most cases it just means the piece is arranged in a key other than C. I can see, though, how a kid who is new to reading music might find it a useful crutch. But it does not much help musical understanding. Normally when you see an accidental it means something has happened harmonically in the music, and when you're just going along in your main key the music looks plain and clean. Some of the rhythms are a little simplified, which is generally good for beginners with basic reading skills, and if they know the music they can correct the rhythms themselves. Also there is a pretty good technical section at the beginning of the book that briefly explains recorder technique and fingering and the rudiments of music notation, and provides two very simple tunes to practice on. You could theoretically use this as a stand-alone primer for starting recorder.Overall, though, I think the difficulty of the pieces is a bit high for kids who are assumed to have so little musical experience that they benefit from the above beginner-oriented features. Yoda's theme is the easiest, as it involves very simple rhythms, and only a one-octave C scale augmented with F#. The Duel of the Fates is also fairly accessible, using only the first register (up to D), and the new note of Bb as well as F#.It would probably be helpful if the songs were arranged in this way, in order of difficulty, but they are not (those are #6 and #5 respectively). I would put "May the force be with you" next, which is arranged in D minor with just one octave of range and the Bb the only "tricky" note. But with a lot of skips, it is actually pretty challenging for a beginner. Princess Leia's theme adds Db, and also requires only the first register. Like the "force" theme, it is a lovely, lyrical tune, which a motivated beginner can probably master with some effort. The Star Wars main theme is arranged in the key of F, goes up into the second register and involves big intervals and triplet rhythms, so now we're getting into challenging territory for kids. Still playable, though. Good challenge for kids, who will surely WANT very badly to play this tune. But the Imperial March is downright hard, and it is made harder by the choice of arranging it in the key of Eb. I find it MUCH easier to play on the recorder transposed down a half step into D, which would also be a lot easier to read. (On the other hand, if you want to do a duet with someone playing a Bb instrument like trumpet or clarinet, Eb is good because the other person would be playing in F, which is easy). By the time your beginning recorder student is playing chromatic scales in both the first and second registers, and reading all kinds of accidentals and dotted eighth-sixteenth rhythms, maybe a little transposing is not going to throw them one bit.I didn't mention "Throne room," which as little more than a reprise of the force theme seems like a waste of space.

I love these songs and love that it's put together, but there's no way these are "easy." I teach recorder, and there are accidentals like crazy, of course. But more troubling are the high notes! I can't hardly get them out without a terrible squeak, let alone a beginner.

I can now give headaches to all my friends and loved ones. Its like havinga super power.

John Williams! Star Wars! What more can I say? These simplified arrangements of familiar Start Wars Themes are easy to play and will appeal to the younger student who wants to go one step beyond the elementary school music offering. This music would also be AWESOME for an elementary school music program. Imagine how enthusiastic your students would be if they could actually play the imperial march! With this music, they can! Adults or more advanced players will want to find a more complete arrangement.

Has note lettering that helps make it easier for a beginner to learn. Found that beginners have some issues with how much air to push through the recorder for the very high and low notes. Guess that just takes practice. Really recommend this book for anyone interested in leaning some star wars music. Just playing around it works for piano and guitar as well (as if it wouldn't).

I LOVE THIS!!! When my kid brought home that cursed recorder, I cried. Really, I did. I was doing my usual Star Wars stuff browsing when I came across this. If I'm going to have to listen to that stupid recorder, I might as well listen to it play songs I actually WANT to hear!I'll gladly listen to anything John Williams over "Hot Cross Buns" any day!I highly recommend this to any of my fellow geeks/nerds with kids :)

This is not easy, beginner music. This is easy, intermediate music. I still can't play most of the songs. Too many flats.

Got this for my mother because she wanted to learn how to play the recorder. I would not recommend it for beginner's as the notes are pretty high to start out on. However, I play the trumpet (I'd consider myself more of an advanced musician), and I can easily read/play the notes. When I play it, the songs sound great. So, whether you're an advanced recorder player or trumpet player, I think you'd really enjoy this book.

No travel guide can be all things to all people, but this Lonely Planet Travel Guide to Washington, Oregon, and the Pacific Northwest is a very good introduction to the region. It covers the U.S. states of Oregon and Washington, along with Canada's Vancouver and Vancouver Island. The format is geared to readers who want their information quickly, in bite-sized chunks with maps and graphics. The guide has only a handful of pictures, but it does make a good effort to sort the attractions of the Pacific Northwest to appeal to a variety of reader tastes and interests, from the seashore to outdoor recreation to micro-breweries to traveling with children.Readers may find the geographic breakdown of the guide to be especially useful. Oregon has seven sections, Washington has five, and the Canadian corner has two more. This breakout allows for a more nuanced approach to large but distinctive regions such as the cities of Portland and Seattle, the Williamette Valley, and Vancouver Island. The sections have lots of suggestions for accommodations, food, and local attractions. Highly recommended as a planning aid for a vacation or visit.

Here for 18months and needed a book to show us around the entire pacific north west, also not just the big towns but we will be around a lot of areas that are not in the usual tourist destinations. This book however, seems to have it all!Pros: Topical, informative, humorous, well writtenCons: None that i can find yetWell worth a buy if you are doing any sort of travelling around the pnw!

I'm a fan of the Lonely Planet series and I have used them for my travel many times. Both inside and outside the States. But I feel a bit disapointed for this one. Not much helpful information which I can find on the Internet. The authors are Americans so they could not make their writing style as "discovery" style like the other authors did in the other guides.

I am planning a trip to Portland during Easter and Lonely Planet was the first guide book came to mind. It offers good information on historical and cultural backgrounds, as well as practical information for where to stay and where/what to see. I love hiking and know that Oregon is great for that, but have no idea where to start, this book provided great information and I basically planned my trip according to its suggestions.

I bought this book before we took an RV trip to Washington and Oregon. We were gone for 5 weeks and visited manyof the places listed in this book. Very helpful, good photos, lots of information.

OK if you are doing a quick tour of the NW but not if you live here. I always buy the tour book for where I live and have been happy with them but this book is too general. It only has what I would say are the top tourist spots in the cities and not information on things "off the beaten path".

Great information and very helpful guide. I like the rrecommendatios for lodging, food and local hiked and outdoor activities. I have used this guide on many trips.

This is a great guidebook for visiting Washington and Oregon. Gives lots of great information for places to visit. I recommend it to anyone going on vacation in that area.

To start, in case it has not been clear, this book is NOT ABOUT FARMING! Its about HOW TO START A FARM BUSINESS!!! This book looks at the business side of things, with a farming twist. It goes through and explains the common things needed to know about how things work when starting up. So, for me, I can see this helping me write a business plan. It doesnt show me how to write a business plan, look elsewhere for that. But when you are writing your business plan, you can reference this book to see if there is anything you missed. The only thing I didnt like were the "Inspirational Stories" inside each chapter. While they were great to read about, there are two sides to every story. While reading these stories, it made me feel as if I can only succeed and not fail at this. I know this isnt true, but I wanted to read about failures too. Where are those stories? I wanted to read about people who failed but lived to see another day. But thats just me. I like a little more realism and not a lot of fluff. But overall, great book. The author had her ups and downs as she started her farm. And as a business man, I can see they are true. Thats what business is all about, Live and Learn.

You would just have to like it, its okay, ordered it my school said it was a good one???

I appreciate the style and approach to this book but there was a lot of redundancy in my opinion and too much fluff.

You never know how well books of this type are actually written, but glad to say this is well organized. Includes a myriad of details for you to follow-up dependent upon your situation. Examples of operating businesses who are glad to be contacted and offer their expertise. Also includes form examples such as grant applications. Useful book.

Interesting and helpful

This book has given me several ideas to use, and new information. It is easy to read and a must have if you are thinking of having a profitable hobby farm.I really like this book!

Sarah Aubrey has produced a nicely written, well researched resource for hobby farming. This book is recommended for anyone interested in local food production marketing and agritourism.

This book delivers great and practical information on the Hobby Farm. The book is well researched and laid out in a good format. I really enjoyed the side bars. The personal stories of the farmers featured were insightful. I found the side bar stories especially stimulating, giving me several good insights and ideas to try.

Review

"This stimulating and challenging book will make readers think." (Linden D. McLaughlin, Bibliotheca Sacra, October-December 2010)"Beale's work--a masterful exercise in biblical theology--is compelling. The book is weighty, but accessible, and Beale's tone is irenic throughout." (Gary A. Parrett, Interpretations, July 2010)"An excellent example of how to build a theological conviction in light of detailed work in biblical texts in their original languages." (Chris Keith, The Expository Times, February 2010)"A good example of sound evangelical scholarship. . .A solid discussion of one aspect of idolatry in the Christian Bible." (L. S. Tiemeyer, Journal for the Study of the Old Testament, 33.5, 2009)"Preachers, students, and teachers will find in this exciting book not only original ideas, but also food for thought about the relevance of intertextuality for biblical theology." (Matthieu Richelle, Themelios, 2009)"As a heavy-weight contribution to this field of research the book is to be commended as a thoughtful, important and impressive piece of work." (Marcus Nodder, Now Reviews, May 2009)". . .for the interested Christian lay-person, it provides a solid discussion of one aspect of idolatry in the Christian Bible." (L. S. Tiemeyer, Journal for the Study of the Old Testament, 33.5 2009)"If you're studying the subject of worshipping anything that is a substitute for God, you'll surely want to obtain this volume." (The Baptist Bulletin, March/April 2009)"Think of this book as a thorough resource to use for your sermons, a textbook on idolatry, and a voice of wisdom that is not afraid to call into question the worship of the Church. Worship leaders, pastors, and small group leaders alike will have more than enough in this resource to use for weeks on end; and with a topic talked about this much in Scripture, this is exactly what we need." (Worship Leader, March/April 2009)"Greg Beale has turned out yet another masterpiece of biblical theology and intertextual exegesis. Beale is a master at letting Scripture interpret Scripture." (Green Baggins (greenbaggins.wordpress.com), February 2, 2009)

Review

"This profoundly insightful study of idolatry brings into the spotlight a topic of exceptional significance. Illuminating a wide range of biblical passages, Professor Beale skillfully elucidates the life-defining and transforming nature of worship, both true and false. Everyone who reads this book will be deeply challenged to reflect afresh upon the way in which what we revere shapes not only our present lives but also our future destinies." (T. Desmond Alexander, Union Theological College, Belfast)"Nothing else comes even close to this authoritative analysis of the destroying power of idolatry and its comparison to the renewing power of true worship of the one real God. Beale's relentlessly thorough coverage of the biblical material, using a purposely maximalist approach, gives the reader a close look at every possible reference to relevant passages, no matter how obscure or tangential, so that no stone is left unturned in demonstrating how idolatry--ancient or modern--ruins people's lives. Any biblical preacher or teacher would benefit from this book." (Douglas Stuart, professor of Old Testament, Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary)"This stimulating and in-depth study on idolatry is vintage Greg Beale. Beale argues that we become like the idols we worship, and he makes his case through a careful intertextual study of the Scriptures. Insights abound as Beale unfolds the biblical text. We are reminded afresh that idolatry is the root sin, and that it is so heinous because it robs God of the glory and praise and honor that he alone deserves." (Thomas R. Schreiner, James Buchanan Harrison Professor of New Testament Interpretation, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary)"This is an original, brilliant and most satisfying treatment of a theme central to biblical understanding, but often misunderstood or ignored in the modern church. This book requires careful study but it repays far more than it requires." (David F. Wells, Andrew Mutch Distinguished Professor of Historical and Systematic Theology, Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary)"We Become What We Worship is biblical theology at its best, weaving together Old and New Testament texts into a unified message. Beale's work is original yet traditional, profound yet simple, exegetical yet 'hyperexegetical,' sometimes provocative yet always profitable, for the scholar yet for every serious Christian. His message that we resemble what we revere, either for ruin or for restoration, is convincing and convicting." (Bruce Waltke, professor of Old Testament, Reformed Theological Seminary)"This thoughtful examination of a surprisingly significant biblical theme will richly reward all who read it. . . . It offers that rare combination of careful, insightful exegesis and perceptive application from which not only biblical scholars but all Christians can benefit." (Frank Thielman, Presbyterian Professor of Divinity, Beeson Divinity School)

"We become what we worship, either for ruin or restoration." This is the thesis of this book, and I think Beale does a compelling job spelling that out, working through so many texts from Genesis to Revelation. This book can be read by a mature lay reader - Beale does not require any knowledge of Greek or Hebrew - but really I think it will be a sturdy challenge for everybody. The exegesis is very intricate, and Beale plays out countless connections to his theme throughout Scripture (and even in the Second Temple writings, and the Dead Sea Scrolls).Demonstrating the transforming effects of idolatry in the Old Testament is natural enough, since this was Israel's besetting sin. Beale's explanations of Genesis 3, Exodus 32, Ps 106 and 115, Isaiah 6, and Hosea 4 were very compelling, and he demonstrates his theme well. The New Testament is harder since, as Beale notes, there is not a single text which explicitly supports his thesis. His exegesis then is looking at how the OT tests inform the thoughts of the NT writers, showing surprising grammatical connections between NT texts and the Septuagint renderings of the OT. Some of these seemed like a stretch (and some of them he even concedes may be a stretch) but it was interesting to see.My first inclination was to give this a four star rating, because Beale really does pour a tremendous amount of information into the work and has surely done his work in exegesis. But I have two primary complaints about this work which drag it down.1. The material should have been edited down to be 50-100 pages shorter than it was. I understand that exegesis is hard work, but in explaining the Old Testament texts, he exegetes how the NT applies the them. And then when he looks at the NT texts, he wants to make connections to the OT background and so he is thoroughly working through the same texts. It seemed like there was a lot of duplication. I'm OK with reading academic literature, but I found this work often to be pretty dry and repetitive. There were not a few times that I felt like just putting the book down and saying "enough."2. His thesis, "we become what we worship, whether for restoration or ruin," was very thoroughly covered on the side that those who worship idols become like the idols. However, I was extremely disappointed that the positive side of his thesis got almost no attention. The idea that we are conformed to the image of Christ is no small theme in the New Testament, but it seemed like an afterthought in this work. If Beale had reduced his discussion of idolatry by 100 pages and dedicated those pages to the positive theme of this work (and especially showing how that theme is worked out in the OT) I think this would have been an incredible work. It's a missed opportunity. Please don't get me wrong - this was a very solid work, and I'm glad to have read it. But I don't think I'll be passing this along to any of my friends to read, and for that, I give three stars.

What an excellent book. Beale does a great job not only laying out what intertexuality should look like in Chapter 1, but then he actually nails it throughout the remainder of the book. His spot on exegesis of various passages shows not only a high level of scholarship, but also a man who has wrestled with and been impacted by the texts. I am very grateful for this work. I have studied passages like Is. 6, Ex. 32, Gen.3 and so on. He has opened doors and made connections that I had never even considered. This book is good for any serious student of scripture who seeks to discover a biblical theme that often goes overlooked. I would encourage all readers to have their highlighters and pens--you will need it.

Beale has written an excellent theology of idolatry in this book. His main thesis is stated in the title of the book: we become like what we worship. We are by nature worshiping creatures, and we will eventually become like what we worship. If that is God, we will be molded into God's image (which is what we were created to do). But if we worship idols, we will become like idols.Beale demonstrates that this idea about idolatry and worship permeates the Scripture. He looks primarily at Psalm 135:18 and the account of the golden calf in Exodus 32, but shows how this same idea is entwined implicitly all throughout the Old Testament and into the New Testament. He does an excellent job and gives a compelling case for his assertions. He certainly has changed the way I read the Old and New Testament in light of idolatry.Disclaimer: This book is a heavy and academic (yet thoroughly biblical) study of idolatry. As such, there is a lot of deep exegesis and heavy theological groundwork - so it is not primarily directed to laypeople and is not a light read by any means. Beale does try to give some practical application at the end of the book, but even in doing so his insights tend to be more abstract and academic, and he shows himself to be a professor at heart. So if you are willing to spend some time working through his exegesis and theology, then I'd encourage you to read Beale's work.

The idea behind this book is intriguing and incredibly insightful. I believe Beale performed his task well in writing this book by explaining the relationship between an idol and its worshipper (who eventually becomes like the idol (deaf, dumb, and ineffective), which is the main theme of the book. However, I have three modest critiques of Beale. 1. This work is far too wordy. I don't think a person with amnesia would forget what Beale said in chapter 1 because he repeats himself all the way through the book. That makes the reading of the book more tedious than it should be. The book could honestly be about 50 pages shorter and still be excellent. 2. Some of the conclusions that Beale forms are unlikely or stretching the text. Some of his proof texts do not even seem to deal with the theme of idolatry (especially when he gets into the NT). 3. Beale leaves out (in my opinion) some factors that may well bolster his argument. I think either a second edition or a work along the same lines is needed but with more in-depth development of certain themes and texts as long as they coincide with the right interpretation of the text. However, all-in-all, the topic itself is thoroughly intriguing (sorry for the redundancy but that really is the right word in this instance) and deserves to be studied out. This is a great book for someone to start doing that.
