Review

#1 Indie Next Pick for MayBookish: Spring’s Must-Read Fiction“Sarah Blake is such a beautiful writer she can make any world shimmer, but The Guest Book is particularly fascinating―an intergenerational exploration of memory, identity, love, and family loyalty, of what it costs to inherit a name, a place, and a difficult alignment with history. Powerful and provocative storytelling.” ―Paula McLain, New York Times bestselling author of The Paris Wife and Love and Ruin“I loved The Guest Book. Sarah Blake has managed the extraordinary feat of writing both an intimate family saga and an ambitious excavation of the subterranean currents of race, class, and power that have shaped America. This is a vivid, transporting novel, written by a master conjuror of time and place.” ―Jessica Shattuck, New York Times bestselling author of The Women in the Castle“Sarah Blake’s powerful, beautifully written story portrays a couple's secret choices that come to haunt succeeding generations. The Guest Book is richly atmospheric and morally compelling in a way that stirs the mind long after the last page.” ―Nancy Horan, author of Loving Frank and Under the Wide and Starry Sky“Epic and sweeping, without ever leaving behind the personal and profound, The Guest Book is a reminder of what novels do better than anything else. Without losing their specificity, three generations of Milton women reveal something about every family, the secrets and unspoken truths that color everything that happens to us. This is a book you will be dying to talk to someone about.” ―Arthur Phillips, author of The Tragedy of Arthur and Prague “Spanning three generations of Miltons, The Guest Book deserves a spot on your summer TBR in 2019.” ―Bustle “The story of the Miltons engages not just with history and politics, but with the poetry of the physical world. This novel sets out to be more than a juicy family saga―it aims to depict the moral evolution of a part of American society. Its convincing characters and muscular narrative succeed on both counts.” ―Kirkus Reviews (starred review)“This powerful family saga…is potent and mesmerizing.” ―Publishers WeeklyPraise for Sarah Blake’s The Postmistress“Great books give you a feeling that you miss all day until you finally get to crawl back inside those pages again. The Postmistress is one of those rare books. When I wasn’t reading it, I was thinking about it.” ―Kathryn Stockett, author of The Help“Some novels we savor for their lapidary prose, others for their flesh and blood characters, and still others for a sweeping narrative arc that leaves us light-headed and changed; Sarah Blake’s masterful The Postmistress serves us all this and more.” ―Andre Dubus III, author of House of Sand and Fog“Even readers who don’t think they like historical novels will love this one and talk it up to their friends. Highly recommended for all fans of beautifully wrought fiction.” ―Library Journal, starred review“Blake captures two different worlds…with a deft sense of character and plot, and a perfect willingness to take on big, complex questions.” ―Publishers Weekly“To open Blake’s novel… is to enter a slipstream, so powerful are its velocity, characters, and drama.” ―ALA Booklist, starred review“The Postmistress belongs in what Gellhorn called ‘the permanent and necessary’ library.” ―Howard Norman, author of The Bird Artist and Devotion“Hits hard and pushes buttons expertly…Ms. Blake writes powerfully about the fragility of life….” ―The New York Times

Review

Praise for Walking the Americas: Sunday Times top 10 bestseller in the UK Longlisted for the Banff Mountain Book award for adventure travel “One of the most engaging aspects of Wood's narrative is his ability to bring his passion for adventure, for history, for learning about indigenous cultures and interacting with native peoples and for the natural world to the reader in an unpretentious manner . . . His is travel and adventure writing at its best.”―Shelf Awareness “So often books on great treks seem to relish recounting only maladies, sexcapades, or drunken capers. Not so with Wood; he focuses on the people and places he and Alberto encounter, which makes for great reading.”―Library Journal (starred review) “[Wood’s] books come with a sense of unpolished authenticity, a natural result of his taking on genuinely adventurous expeditions.”―Financial Times (UK) “A thrilling narrative trek . . . [Wood] elevates this already fascinating landscape with lively prose that combines travel journal with history lessons, memoir, and survivalist handbook. This skillful weaving of genres creates intensity and suspense chapter to chapter, keeping the reader’s interest piqued and the pages turning as Wood pays deep respect to a dangerous and extraordinarily beautiful part of the planet.”―Booklist “Wood excels at verbal snapshots of the differences among the countries . . . A jaunty glimpse into the cities and countryside of Central America from the point of view of a traveler well-equipped to compare life there to other countries around the globe.”―Kirkus Reviews Praise for Levison Wood and Walking the Nile: “Levison Wood is a great adventurer and a wonderful storyteller.”―Sir Ranulph Fiennes “Many have attempted this holy grail of an expedition―so I admire Lev’s determination and courage to pull this off.”―Bear Grylls “Levison Wood has breathed new life into adventure travel.”―Michael Palin “Obsession, sacrifice, bravery, death―the themes of great expedition tales haven’t changed since Odysseus set sail. The adventurer Levison Wood has accomplished a doubly impressive feat, not only walking the Nile but capturing that experience in this lovely, evocative book.”―Mark Adams, New York Times bestselling author of Turn Right at Machu Picchu “Wood’s interest, as well as his talents as a writer, lie . . . in finding out ‘what life was like in corners of the world that do not always make it into our headlines’ and in capturing the character and foibles of the people who inhabit them . . . Mr. Wood has a good eye for detail and a better ear for dialogue . . . What’s more, unlike many explorers who went before him, Mr. Wood seems to have remained composed and charming throughout.”―Wall Street Journal “Gripping . . . Collecting these stories―let alone doing so beautifully―requires a variety of lucky skills. Wood emerges as a dutiful and brave guide.”―Los Angeles Times “A travelogue vivid enough to feel the burning sands in our soles.”―Minneapolis Star Tribune “Walking the Nile continues the illustrious tradition of travel adventures stretching from Marco Polo to Henry W. Longfellow to Bear Grylls . . . Wood’s remarkable achievement is one each reader can savor vicariously . . . This worthy effort . . . should satisfy even the most jaded armchair adventurers.”―Lincoln Journal Star

Exploring a Mayan underwater cave, visiting one of the most violent barrios in Honduras, and navigating a swamp few Westerners have ever passed through are just a few of Levinson Wood's exploits in his third "Walking" book. But what makes this book so much fun to read is that in Alberto, Lev has found another unforgettable travel partner. Alberto is part guide, part interpreter, and all comedian. Through Alberto we learn what motivates so many Central Americans to seek refuge in the United States.'Walking the Americas" contains Lev's best people pictures yet. His image of a Congolese boy in a migrant camp is unforgettable. I do hope he will slow down on future treks and talk to more people. Andrew Forsthoefel's "Walking to Listen" can provide inspiration. I also hope Lev can get his publisher to finally include more detailed maps.

very nicely written with enough back story and history to keep an edge... will read his other books.

Well done story of a hike thru Central America. Enjoyed the play by play description of the hike and people and country

Birthday gift for my brother. He loves his books

It was a moderately interesting read but not very poetic or detailed. I have traveled quite a bit in Latin America and read this in Costa Rica while on a trip. I haven't read anything else by this author. It's a quick read but it glossed over so much. There was no storytelling, really, it was a little history, a little politics/current events, a little social commentary, a little travel journal, but nothing in any depth. I've read other travelogues that draw the reader in but this one was very bland. Like "it rained harder than I've ever experienced." No poetry to the writing and he never made me care about this journey, even though I was very excited to read it given my prior travel to the region.

Excellent explorer book. I recommend all his work. It makes you think outside the box about different inhospitable places and makes you realize that there is more than what the news says.

This book showed a picture of what is currently going on south of our border. I never knew that so many of the people heading north are not from the Americas. They are from all over he world.

Absorbed in the trek and captivated by the landscape painted by the storyteller. I joined Lev and Alberto on the adventure and both happy and sad that it had to end.

I will just never follow the masses, I am so surprised that this book received an overwhelming amount of five stars. While the sci fi world created was interesting, and there were some funny moments with the heroine and her computer...this book left me feeling...ugh.There is no real story! This "sophisticated" woman is involved in a silly, bogus challenge on some barbarian planet against a gorgeous warrior--she loses--and basically becomes a sex slave to him. She falls in love with him straight away, rather "in lust", craving sex with him all the time.I could accept the instant physical attraction premise, but these two characters are as flat as a piece of paper. I have no idea why Challan falls so hard for Tedra when from beginning to end, she's nothing but a whining, complaining, silly, immature and uninteresting woman. And though Challan is a gorgeous caveman type, he's just as uninteresting. He doesn't speak much and seems to enjoy goading the "silly little woman around"--because that is the role of women on this alien planet--they're scared, silly little creatures who are dominated by the superior warriors...There was a lot of potential in this story, I would have accepted a lot as well had there been a spark--a true spark of attraction and chemistry between the two lovers. These two never had a regular conversation...there was no romance, nothing sweet or tender that plucked at the heart strings...just a lot of goading and posturing, boasting and vanity...I wasn't at all absorbed in the relationship, I ended up not caring for the two and started flipping through the pages asking myself why so many others think this book deserves a five star rating. This book could have been so much better...instead I wanted to clobber both Tedra and Challan, shake them, have them explain to me why they are attracted to the other and why they were falling in love, based on what??...Maybe those two do deserve each other after all, only they seem to get it and themselves...they don't seem to feel inclined to explain it to me-- the reader....they're two fictional characters, lost in their book, in their world, teasing and peeing each other off, page after page after page--Tedra ever the perpetually insulted, angry shrew and Challan the stoic, monosyllabic warrior with the beefy arms and chest-- enjoying all that make-up sex(which, by the way, is pretty vanilla--so no big thrill there either).

Blech blech blech. The first several pages are just the author flaunting around how many interesting futuristic space gadgets she could think up and describe for literally no reason. This happens frequently. On top of that, the 'warrior' is a nightmare sexist who treats the protagonist like crap but then also never learns from it. He constantly condescends to her despite their growing 'romance'. Half the fun of the "brutal old-fashioned warrior falls for smart, sassy protag" is watching him grow into a sweet guy and realize how cool his lady is while she learns to rough-it/respect other cultures/whatever. They grow together. This is just a jerk bullying a woman who constantly talks about how smart and strong she is, without actually being all that smart or strong.

I was intrigued by the premise of this novel. Previously I had read a couple of this author's historical romances, so I thought I'd check it out. Overall it was well written and well paced, entertaining enough to hold my interest. The story was okay, but in the end there were just too many things that bothered me for me to say I liked it. I'm going to mention those things below, so if you don't want any spoilers, skip this part.**Spoilers Ahead**I have a major issue with the heroine. Her us this lean mean fighting machine, and yet she continually shows very little restraint or control. And the minute she sees this guy, regardless of how he treats her, she just goes up in asexual flames. Really? I guess all this strong independent woman needed was an arrogant domineering male to make her feel like a fragile little woman. Ugh. I hate that. I get that maybe she was tired of always being in charge. I get that his strength and dominance may be attractive to her, but he never even calls her by name. How do you fall for someone like that? And how many times do you say, "I hate him now" or "I'll never forgive what he did" only to buckle because you have no control of your body's sexual responses? The hero amiss his love in the end, but I'm left wondering what love? They vault know each other. They don't seem to actually trust or like each other outside of having sex. How is this love?

I read this book when it first came out (80's, 90's?) and LOVED it. Read it 4 or 5 times. My taste in genres has changed over the years though so I didn't get into it as much this time as I did then. Definitely would have rated it 5/5 back then. This is about a female space pilot who escapes her world and goes looking for assistance on another planet/galaxy and finds a hot barbarian prince who wants to dominate her. It just so happens that his planet mates are distantly related to the barbarians who are trying to take over her world and enslave all the women. Her goal is to convince these primitive people to aid her people/planet. But first, she has to overcome their misogynistic ideations. If fantasy romance is your thing though, go for it! I've been in a nostalgic mood lately so have been revisiting my old favorites. Yeah...I think I'm gonna stop that lol

They say history is written by the victors. I know my view of the American Revolution is colored by my having been born, raised, and educated in the United States. So here comes an Englishman to add a little bit of perspective to my America-centric view of history.Simon Schama's Rough Crossings: Britain, the Slaves, and the American Revolution presents a slice of history not often considered in studies of the time during and after the American Revolution. British abolitionists were ahead of the curve, working to abolish the slave trade. Some of that spirit was behind the British attitude toward slaves in the American colonies, but, as Schama describes, the war took precedent. The British made an open offer to colonial slaves: fight with us, and we'll grant your freedom. Some of these black loyalists took them up on the offer, leaving the fields and taking up arms. As a reward for their service, they could go to Nova Scotia, the Caribbean, back to England, or elsewhere. Unfortunately, some were captured and sold back to slavery, and many ended up in servitude little different that slavery. But others did very well. After the war, through the efforts of some British abolitionists, one group of over a thousand settlers in Nova Scotia, many of whom were former slaves, were given the opportunity to relocate to Sierra Leone and establish a new colony. Schama takes the reader through these events with a reporter's eye, bringing the stories alive with first-hand accounts and vivid descriptions. We know William Wilberforce, the most famous abolitionist. But before Wilberforce, there was Granville Sharp. Using natural law and legal arguments, Sharp campaigned against slavery, which he said violated English common law, and published the first major British anti-slavery book. His activism and advocacy were such that, as Schama writes, there was not a black person in the British colonies who didn't know Sharp's name.We also meet John Clarkson, whose older brother Thomas was a major abolitionist alongside Wilberforce. John was recruited to lead the Sierra Leone resettlement movement, and, due to his commitment to the families moving from Nova Scotia, came to be revered by them as a modern-day Moses (or Noah, considering the means of transportation). One can scarcely imagine the feelings of these former slaves, many of whom were violently torn away from their homeland, suffered under the heavy hand of slavery in the colonies, and now would be returning to Africa as free people with the promise of land ownership and self-sufficiency.Long before the 20th century civil rights movement, the blacks of Sierra Leone experienced unprecedented equality. Under Clarkson's leadership, blacks and whites were granted true equality, perhaps for the first time anywhere. Once they settled in at Sierra Leone, heads of households, including many women, voted for community leadership, "the first occasion on which African-Americans voted in any election." Schama goes on, "It was momentous . . . that the first women to cast their votes for any kind of public office anywhere in the world were black, liberated slaves who had chosen British freedom." In some ways, this band was a truer embodiment of the ideals of the American revolution than the signers of the Declaration of Independence. If Rough Crossings has a weakness, it's the general lack of context. I wish I could have gotten a better sense of how many slaves actually fought with the British as a proportion of slaves in the colonies, and a comparison of how the Nova Scotia/Sierra Leone former slaves fared versus former slaves who lived elsewhere. I also wish Schama would have spent more time on the fact that almost side-by-side with Freetown a major port for the slave trade remained very active. The hypocrisy and split personality of the British Empire on slavery during this time is astounding.Schama's book presents a little-known slice of history of the United States and the Africans who were brought here. His dry but compelling narrative captures the hardships of colonial life in both Nova Scotia and Sierra Leone, as well as the promise and hope they held out for a new life. Tragically, Clarkson's vision was thwarted by some of his countrymen, but Rough Crossings tells a terrific story that hints at what might have been in Africa.

This book's account about the role of slaves in the Revolutionary War apparently offers a surprise to many American readers as Simon Schama details the mass flight of the Southern States escaped and freed slaves to fight the revolutionaries on the English side. This historical fact was so little known it was called the "dirty little secret" of the war. The work continues the story of those slaves through to their escape to hardship in Acadia, New Foundland, Nova Scotia and even England, and describes the fate for many of ultimate betrayal, along with many thousands of white "Royalists", who also choose to fight on the losing side.Schama, as usual in his excellent works, offers the reader a gripping view of history, and he brings the account up into the period of the politics of Wilberforce and the English "Abolition Movement", the and eventual emancipation. His account of the corrupted ideals and confusions of the attempted creation of new lands in Africa is fascinating, giving new details of the founding of the colony of Sierra Leone. Further betrayals awaited many of the original African settlers, even to re-sale back into the West Indies slave trade.A sad and important story.

Schama unabashedly, and provocatively, studies the past from a moral viewpoint. In Citizens, he lengthily propounds the thesis that the French Revolution's violence was inherent from the very start and was not a perversion brought about by Jacobin terror. In this book, he seeks to introduce a discordant note in the traditional narratives of the American Revolution: Yes, it was a step forward in the story of freedom, but, no, it was a step back for American slaves who rushed to British lines after the redcoats offered freedom in exchange for serving George III. A remarkable story that led some men and women from Africa, to the American colonies, to Nova Scotia, and finally to Sierra Leone told in an unapologetically literary style.

Very interesting account of the black experience during and after the American War of Independence, showing that the war for liberty was quite flawed in its ideology, because most of the slaves (including George Washington's) wanted to be in the British lines. Schama is very critical of the Americans - makes a change from the rosy accounts of the Revolution - but he doesn't skimp on showing British hypocrisy, describing how British politicians were often influenced by West Indian plantation owners, and thus stopped the abolition of slavery.Very good book.
